In Bangor, North Wales there used to be Liptons, a small supermarket on the high street in 1985. They used to play music on a loop and THIS was on it. To be a goth at that time and to buy your spaghetti hoops to Bauhaus was just fab.
The Hunger....what a movie! Bowie and Deneuve....Then you have Bauhaus singing this song in the mix... A timeless classic movie, a timeless classic song and a timeless classic band/singer.
Hard to imagine that movie didn't go nowhere at the Box Office then - it's really a great movie with a peculiar atmosphere and a very crank story - and last but not least it has David Bowie in it - what more do you need?

Peter Murphy was the vocalist of the group Bauhaus. Thin, with prominent cheekbones, a rich voice, and a penchant for gloomy poetics, Murphy is often called the "Godfather of Goth". This song-- Bela Lugosi's Dead-- is found on -Bauhaus Singles: 1979-1983, Volume 1.
Agreed completely. And i too would suggest that this is one of those you've types of songs or music videos - it's pretty far from the type of music that I typically enjoy - Grateful Dead and Miles Davis - but I keep coming back to this one...
Bauhaus is my top 10 band. Not one person living sounds as great as Peter Murphy. The greatest band ever that has influenced me in so many ways. They are the best live act as well.
the best moment of my life was the moment when i first discovered the Bauhaus. Peter Murphy embodies uniqueness - true art..whatever you call it - punk, new wave, goth pop.. absolutely irrelevant! this music is philosophy that connects me to the dearest people in the world and someone i honestly adore...fills me with happiness!
The first time I heard this song was at a Goth night at some pub which was so bizarre! There were so many eldergoths dancing and not smiling o.O then there was me and my friend dancing like kids with big grins on our faces... Probably one of the most surreal moments of my life
On the second episode, a newer remake of this song plays...... I almost screamed. I asked Gaga 2 years ago to possibly consider making a 'The Hunger 2' she listens to fans. So many simularities. If you watched 'The Hunger' as many times as I, you see Gaga wearing the same style clothes as Devenue. The swinging.... I was tripping out watching AHSHotel. We asked her for a jazz album she produced. She going into heavy metal in the future. We know years ahead before she outs materiel out. She drops encryptic hints in her tweets.
Some say this was the very start of the "goth movement" which sprung up many years after this song was released, way before it was even referred to as "goth". . I still think David Bowie from the early 70's was the original one who gave rise to Bauhaus, Peter Murphy, Siouxie and The Banshees, The Cult, Sisters Of Mercy, Type O Negative, etc. Bowie was the godfather of this particular sound, look and "feel".....hands down.
I like this song, and hadn't heard it in years. I was led to it in the early 1990s. I don't actually only like one type of music but I've rocked a lot....
Pure magic. All I can say is that if vampires do exist....they listen to BAUHAUS. Who knows....the boys in BAUHAUS might be familiars!! Very important song in the history of modern music. It's amazing.
yes, it should read: music video (from one of the best films ever, the Hunger, with David Bowie) of Bauhaus'(one of the original creators of the goth movement)Bela Lugosi's Dead (possibly one of the best --and gothiest-- songs ever written) haha
They used to have the full live recording of this version of the song used in The Hunger, but that got taken down by youtube. Shame because I really loved the full live version of this song.
When I first posted a comment on this song circa 1995 there was only about three video's of this number on here. Great to see how it's grown. I heard it on Mark Radcliffe's Out On Blue Six radio 1 or 2.
This brings back so many memories of that movie !! It was the first R movie my folks let me see and it was only because I was, still am, a huge David Bowie fan. This movie sparked my love of vapires but unfortunatly most newer vampire movies aren't that good. Even if the movies today suck, at least today there are many, many great books and book series out there about vampires/immortals.
TCM at night when no one was awake is how I was lucky enough to experience this film(way too young than I probably should've 😅) still, it had a massive impact on me, and I've been in love with Susan sarandon since 💕 I need to watch this again
This song, at Todd's in Detroit back in the 1980's, along with all the smoke and the fog machine too, created the absolutely most bizarre puppet show as dozens of 80's Goths all paid tribute to this scene from The Hunger and Peter Murphy/Bauhaus over and over and over... every Thursday night ... ahhhhh good times....

This will always be the sexiest scene in history. The subliminal seduction. The cruise, oh how it does ooze. I always was on a pursuit of a club that had that same dark mystical vibe, and when I found it, on one of those long dark nights in the city, I lit a cigarette, sat at the bar, nursed my highball, and felt like I was home...finally.

Authentic goth in great times. The era of being spoiled by genius after genius. Long may it endure. The parties that never end. To be continued as always..
Back in the day, the opening of this song started and a murder of goths ran to the tiny dance floor and began shuffling around dramatically lol
An anthem of its generation.
You forgot to mention the lit clove cigarette.
"Back in the day" they weren't called "goths", they were called "punks" or "mods." 🖤
I know! I was there! It was freaking awesome!!

Plenty off those..Specially when English aint My first Language..U can make ur own lyrics.
It really does sound like that!
Goth technically began with Edgar Allan Poe drunk singing in a ditch for the crows under a gibbous moon.
Waxing or waning?

ya but goth music started with them
I love how Susan Sarandon now causally admits to sleeping with Bowie from the time she spent with him making this film!
I would have paid to watch...
Who wouldn't want to sleep with Bowie? Especially 1983 Bowie.
Also wouldn't be surprised if a bunch of chicks did that with her ex husband Chris Sarandon
No need to admit. They were seen together everywhere.
Is it true that bowie sleep with many women?

you dont get anything like Bauhaus anymore, this was the most epic of all epicness :)
Peter Murphy is the KING of all vampires.
Pete Murphy is a moving painting.

A great song to move to...Gives me shivers. Love Bauhaus, the godfathers of goth.
The song that spawned a genre. From an equally brilliant film, 'The Hunger'. Still gives gooseflesh after all this time.

Tony Scott in three minutes more or less summed up the whole goth aesthetic better than anyone, shame he went on to direct such schlock.
