That wood grain is absolutely superb Clay. Excellent tutorial. Do you know what alternative I can use for the hot sepia lacquer, that stuff seems to be unobtainable in the UK.
kool yea i found some on the website on the box you had on there im tired of the bits bending on me that i have seems like some of the styrene is harder to drill thru than others i guess thank you very much for getting back with me on it
I've seen partial ones like this, full wood grain across the whole dash face, and some are just all flat black. It really was up to who was building the car back then.
Actually, the brush was awful. It was super stiff because I hadn't cleaned it very well from the last time I used it. So that may have actually helped make the pattern.
I wouldn't say it is any better. Probably a lot quicker than working with oils since they take so long to dry. But for a quick effect it's pretty handy.
Early 70's....It is more of a general representation of the era. I've seen all sorts of different versions. The Museum car didn't have wood at all. Some have full wood faces. And others were like this.
The shifter looks good but I hope the camera perspective is throwing me off. Because it looks like the knob is going to be almost behind the driver’s seat.

Within the first 5 minutes I've broken the drill bit and glued the PE to my finger . . . : )

The dash looks awesome. Ron
If that would've been me, that charger emblem would've slid off with the brush. 😂

Thanks for this interesting video! I never would've thought of using candy orange paint to help create woodgrain. I am a new subscriber.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for subscribing!
Excellent! I so admire authentic dashwork, and it's not easy to do.
wood grain is fantastic! I'm going to have to try this
Clay i see where your going with the dirty look, after i thought about it USAC ran Dirt and Asphalt. Nice work.
Great technique. I will certainly be using this in future builds. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome work Clay!
Wow, that is amazing! Thanks for posting these tips.
Epic
For the shifter knob, try using .177 air gun bbs. Made out of nylon and much easier to drill.
Very nice! I learned a few more tricks.👍
What a pleasure watching you work, super great job and why would anybody put thumb down on this is beyond me,please continue making more video,it really help us older fellow, thank you so much

very detailed decals in that kit. i would suggest a flat clear for the wood and dash 👍
Very nice work. Thank you for the tips.
A master in the arts 😊 can you please tell me where I can look for the power slide gauge decals?

That wood grain is absolutely superb Clay.
Excellent tutorial.
Do you know what alternative I can use for the hot sepia lacquer, that stuff seems to be unobtainable in the UK.
Artists acrylic inks. They can work the same way. Just a few drops into a clear carrier should do ya…
Amazing, what is the sepia for ? lower contrast?
🔥🔥🔥🔥
hey clay where did you find that drill bit kit at thats pretty awesome please let me know thank you for all the awesome knowledge
I find those on ebay. They are used in circuit boards. They are really sharp, but super fragile. I break a lot of them!
kool yea i found some on the website on the box you had on there im tired of the bits bending on me that i have seems like some of the styrene is harder to drill thru than others i guess thank you very much for getting back with me on it
That dash is a work of art, thanks for sharing your process.
So did all the 70s Charger stock cars have wooden dash inserts?
I've seen partial ones like this, full wood grain across the whole dash face, and some are just all flat black. It really was up to who was building the car back then.
@@ClayKemp Thanks Clay, period interior shots seem to be a bit thin on the ground for reference.
Awesome job! I learned a lot. I need those drill bits in my life. What set is that?? Thanks in advance!
I get them off of eBay. You get several of each size. Which is good because I break them often!
Tamiya clear orange works the same and isnt as toxic, and one less step. Just as a heads up.
New subscriber here nice channel
I'm sorry. Great video and your technique on the wood grain! Awesome! The only thing though is the turd that you left in it.
Can I get some info on that drill bit set you’re using in the video? I’d really like to buy a kit like that.
I get those off of ebay. I buy them in sets. And break a lot of them. :)
Why the silver spray?
To prevent bleeding into the wood grain?
Great video just subbed your channel
Awesome thank you!
Did you modify the brush you used to add the woodgrain?
Actually, the brush was awful. It was super stiff because I hadn't cleaned it very well from the last time I used it. So that may have actually helped make the pattern.
Is this method of doing grain better or using newton oil paint better?
I wouldn't say it is any better. Probably a lot quicker than working with oils since they take so long to dry. But for a quick effect it's pretty handy.
@@ClayKemp Okay thank you 👍
Where did you get those gauge decals at? I'm trying to find an assortment of generic decals to use on my various models.
I believe those either came from a Salvino kit sheet, or from Slixx. Powerslide makes a full gauge sheet for different eras as well.
Where did you get the drill bits from
I buy those off of ebay.
What year is this car because I think around the gauges it should be wood too
Early 70's....It is more of a general representation of the era. I've seen all sorts of different versions. The Museum car didn't have wood at all. Some have full wood faces. And others were like this.
That drill set looks expensive.
I like that type vs the pin vise.
The shifter looks good but I hope the camera perspective is throwing me off. Because it looks like the knob is going to be almost behind the driver’s seat.
i enjoyed the video. nice wood grain dash. but! i have never seen a stock car with a wood grained dash. seems out of character
These cars still retained a lot of the factory stock interior pieces. The dash was one of them. Seems weird by today standards, but they were there.
Good music
Where did you get the drill bits?
