Max,what a great idea. I love jimmy stewart movies..and that hawk kit makes a lovely model. Great synopsis.i found the movie for rental right away( well, Alexa found it) The Reindeer is almost ugly enough to be in a terrahawks episode...lol
I have never seen this movie. I need to remedy that! Never had the Hawk Comet kit either. A great film review, Max! You touched on things I likely would not have picked up on. I'll be looking for them when I watch the movie. 😎👍
James Stewart, great actor and combat pilot/leader! A good short film for the war effort: “Winning Your Wings”. The Rutland Reindeer is, um, how should I put it…”it ain’t got no alibi”… Attended AMIC (Aircraft Mishap Investigation Course) at Norton AFB back in 91. Amazing what you can learn from the wreckage. Unfortunately, I had to use that knowledge twice during my career, one fatal. Just need an “H” and an “I” to modify the Comet’s carrier name to “BOHICA” 😂
I STAND CORRECTED MAX’S MOVIES & MODELS Glinis Johns , the movie THE Ref… with Denis Leary.. Played a MEAN NARCISSISTIC GRANDMA Good CHRISTMAS Movie !!!!!!! Do another MOVIE, MAX. This was fun …… CHRIS 🇺🇸
Great review! Classic film and often overlooked. Looking forward to that build too. Nice tie in at the endvwith " The High and Mighty " theme music...another good period piece of aircraft film. Thanks
Max, I barely remember this movie. I love BG Stewart! I built a kit bashed model rocket I call "The Bajorian Space Shuttle". I remembered the twin horizontal stabilizers from the movie. I used that and gave the horizontal stabilizers a slight positive lift airfoil. That balanced the rockets asymmetrical drag. She flew straight up! I used a T-Tail with the extra in the middle. I just thought you would find this interesting.
Kind of unrelated, I mean it’s a aviation movie..Glenn Ford is an accident investigator trying to figure out why a plane crashed. It’s been years since I’ve seen it and I don’t remember much of it, but he figures out that if coffee was spilled somewhere it would short out and send a false warning and that’s why it went down. Does anyone besides me remember that movie??
IDEA: You should build your Comet with a bi-plane tail and bulbous nose with long pitot tube like the ''Reindeer''. Of course nowdays, TSA or Sky Marshals would just escort Jimmy Stewart off the plane in a straightjacket as either insane or a terrorist.
Great review, thanks. I saw that movie on TV decades ago - the weird biplane tail stayed with me. I have that Hawk Comet model, must get around to building it at some point. Glad to hear you sounding better.
I agree with several other comments about the movie Fate is the Hunter. I also think the plane in Fate is the Hunter is a little bit strange as well. I hope you get to feeling better very soon, Max, and thank you for everything you do. God bless you always.

I think the flying McGuffin Nevil Shute wanted to highlight was the Bristol Brabazon. A committee-designed airliner built along early Forties Popular Science fantasy lines. Its wingspan was nearly 36 feet wider than the B-747. The super powerplants [to be] it was designed around never developed. Twin contra-rotating turbines, and two engines to each of four nacelles. It was under-powered with what it got. The Reindeer shares the Brabazon's slopeback leading edges, too. It did finally fly in 1949, but was eclipsed by emerging Jets, even if it hadn't been a dog, performance-wise. Brabazon failed because it just didn't sell. The original designers had no idea what the Post War airliner market would be like. But the DeHavilland Comed did have the prophetic metal fatigue failures.
Just watched this gem for the first time after hearing about it here. As a Jimmy Stewart fan this one somehow slipped under my radar. Great movie. Thanks for the heads up.
Well done, Max!... Kenneth Moore, one of my favorites. Also, excellent in "Reach for the Sky", the story of Douglas Bader ('56) and "Sink the Bismark" ('60). His characters in these movies demanded your empathy, just an exceptional actor. You wanted to like him.
Nevil Shute Norway the Author among other things was an aeronautical engineer. He worked with Barnes (bouncing bomb) Wallace on the R-100 dirigible where he worked as a stress engineer. He wrote a book called slide rule which was a scathing report on the design process of the R-101 & in some ways may have inspired some of the ideas in No Highway. He went on to help found Airspeed Ltd. His most famous book is On the Beach. Want to ruin your day, watch that movie.

Great conversation and awesome review. Glynis John's recently died at 100. Fate is the Hunter is a good film.

Fate is the hunter.
That’s it! Thanks Max!!
Notice that the movie is based on the novel by NEVIL SHUTE. He wrote many books in several genre.

Of course nowdays, TSA or Sky Marshals would just escort Jimmy Stewart off the plane in a straightjacket as either insane or a terrorist.
Is your Comet model the later version with the rounded windows? If not it might crack and fall apart.

Nothing wrong with converting the comet to a freighter! Who’s gonna know besides us?!🤫
I just told Steve that is what i am going to do. Great minds.
It is a great movie. I really do enjoy the movie review model tie in. Looking forward to some more. Take care Max and get totally well soon.

Speaking of interesting aircraft designs, the Avro Ashton WB493 was pretty unique. I've never seen anyone attempt a model of it.

Another more recent decal mess up, the Meng F/A-18 has some decals that say “US NANY” on the fighter weapons school decal.
Max what a great presentation and movie review! I saw this movie as a young kid, and never forgot the Rutland reindeer
Max, that was an excellent review! One of my favorite movies too

The Reindeer aircraft in No highway in the sky was made from a Canberra jet bomber
Will have to see if this one is available as it sounds like an interesting film.
Fourty minutes Max? Man you really must be feeling better!
I'm going to watch this film tonight because I have never seen it before. Thank you for the review.
