Such as stealing an ice cream truck and delivering it to him for reasons he won't elaborate. Asking you to destroy a bus full of kids cause some of them are his victims that he fears may rat him out. Then in the final Darkel mission, Claude will catch on and rig Darkels ice cream truck to explode since he's so disgusted by him. Darkel will get in and be be killed by the truck exploding

The bus mission doesn't sound all that out of place in theory. They're ground into hot dogs and then you drive the hot dog truck to a diner. Between Darkel's cut from GTA 3 and Scarecrow's cut from Manhunt, it's weird that Rockstar keeps creating violent vagrant characters only to drop them later in development
I remember back in the day when Manhunt came out, and wondering why they cut Scarecrow. He seemed like a great boss character, and he could have been used mid-game, where the game gets a bit repetitive. I'd have preferred that to guiding the tramp, but I guess they wanted an easier guide/follow mission before the reporters one in the end game. That said, I like the theory online that the tramp you have to guide around is Scarecrow, but if so, it was a wasted opportunity to not have him turn on you. My personal theory is it seemed like there was a point during the games design, that R* were going to have a boss for every gang, which they eventually dropped, and Scarecrow was a casualty of that. Also, based on being an ex leader of the Smileys, he might have been replaced by Ramirez. Maybe R* figured it was more satisfying to get revenge on Rameriz, as he is the one messing with you through the game and moving you from locations. Or maybe Scarecrow didn't really fit with the direction the narrative takes at the point of the game? He could have gone in the level with reporter perhaps, but maybe that made the level too difficult with the cops? But at the end of the day, I guess we will never know. 😞
The missions were cut, but the model for Darkel himself is still active. He’s actually UNDER the alleyway with all the tramps out of bounds. Like Rockstar just moved him out of bounds right before the game came out.
I actually can see why this would be cut from a dev perspective. That Rockstar quote was right. tonally it's VERY out of place. Claude may be a psycho but he's not a terrorist. Also they could've been afraid it would make liking Claude harder. when a player plays an optional rampage mission that's not mentioned or canon to the story or runs over a group of civilians that's the player doing that not the protagonist. But when you're given a story mission from an NPC that requires you to do it then it's the progtaganist doing that. And if the protaganist is doing some especially heinous shit then his likeability may suffer.
I think it also has to do with the 9/11 tragedy as GTA3 was released in 2001. It would make sense to scrap a character whose missions involve bombs or crashing planes into towers
I think people are forgetting that all the player actions outside of the main missions are simply not canon, if we were to take into consideration all the senseless murder you can do in any of the GTA games it would make many elements in it's story nonsensical and pointless. Making that missing canon would have required some level of story and real consequences outside of a 2 minute wanted level.
I’ve always loved the lore of the classic GTA universe. It was also a time when things were a lot more ambitious and tongue and cheek. The darkness of the classic games is truly why I love them. It’s a huge vibe.
"There may be more to it than Rockstar is telling us" It wouldn't surprise me that he was cut because he was too much manhunt for GTA. And I don't believe the PR guy doing the Q&A for a moment about 9/11 not factoring into them removing content. People might have forgotten now, but after it happened, the world became psychotically puritanical for a time. There was massive outrage over Lord of the Rings The Two Towers and demand that they change the name. -__- Heck, it also wouldn't surprise me if Darkel led to the creation of Manhunt eventually. Dark drimy murder with colorful gangs and a lot of hobo aesthetics?
I think the best way to try and figure out what these missions could've been is to look at other missions, voice lines, and references to see if there are any that refer to the homeless problem or bootlegging in GTA 3. For a game with as much in it as GTA 3 if they just removed Darkel's missions there should still be some bits and pieces left behind in other parts of the game
Hey man, loving the use of 'Graveyard Shift' from the Manhunt OST. I love both games and I think the OST of Manhunt fits the gritty and gloomy vibe of GTA III's rendition of Liberty City perfectly. Loving your channel!

Damn GTA 3 was about to be a pure terrorist simulator, if it wasnt for 9/11 a lot more controversy would've probably still been made possibly ending the series here
Rockstar said barely anything was changed, the game was 1% different. The only things that were mentioned by the devs were small things like the police cars went from blue to black and changing a planes flight pattern to fly further away from city buildings. The biggest change was making it so planes at the airport couldn’t be blown up
@@EonServoXA no, they said they removed a mission that had the line terrorist in it because it was either easier than replacing the line or it was too obvious what the people in the mission may have been. The other thing they did was replace the caption, “spanked up suicide bombers” to “spanked up madmen”
I always love learning about things that were cut from a game especially if theres a story or reason behind it rather than just didnt have time to finish it or something wasnt working
When Rockstar said that Darkel missions didn't fit into the storyline then i think there were trying to say that his missions were optional as well as, in GTA 3 Every character follows a introduction in the storyline, like this: 8-Ball meets Claude in Give Me Liberty 8-Ball introduces Claude to Luigi Gotterelli Luigi introduces Claude to Misty Misty introduces Claude to Joey Joey introduces Claude to Toni Cipriani and Salvatore Leone Salvatore Leone introduces Claude to Maria Then Maria is the last person who introduces Claude to Asuka in Portland The Question is that who would've introduced Darkel to Claude in GTA 3❓ There has to be someone who would've introduced Darkel to Claude in GTA 3 if he was really in the game.
@@AeridesEntertainment I think that El Burro missions were originally given to Darkel but later they got replaced. My Theory: Also, Have you ever noticed that the mission ''Messing With The Man'' serve no big purpose in Vice City Storyline. Mitch Baker just advices Tommy to kill everyone in Vice City. Messing With The Man mission objective is to fill chaos meter by killing npc's in limited amount of time, that's the same thing which Darkel wanted from Claude in GTA 3 if he would've added in GTA 3.
@@TheBlockerNator In the final version, Marty Chonks Mission Location is not visible on the GTA 3 Map and this thing was not explained by Rockstar Games in their Q@A in 2011 in regards to GTA 3 10th Anniversary.
Now I wonder, what purpose do El Burro, King Courtney, Kenji's missions and D-Ice even serve in the final plot? Do they exist because Rockstar couldn't implement all of their ideas into the main storyline so they created optional characters who would give you missions based on these ideas so that they don't go to waste?
I'mma say this as lovingly as I can, as a game developer on a big, famous FPS series with many controversial moments, the audience needs to stop reaching so much for these things. He's just a cut character. It happens 10000000000 times a day. It isn't a dark conspiracy, it isn't "haunted", or etc. It's just cut content.
I have a very vivid memory of playing the game as a kid and bumping into the vagrants and... sure enough, I heard a line from one of them referencing Darkel. So yeah, I'm pretty sure we can confirm they were going to be Darkel's gang before Darkel got cut.
Darkel's character lives on through all the payphone missions and rampages. Marty Chonks, El Burro, King Courtney, and D-Ice. These missions were more disturbing than the main story missions. Kingdom Come by King Courtney is a really messed up mission. The spanked up suicidal madmen want you dead and keep coming out of those vans. It could be difficult if you don't know what you're doing. Marty Chonks and his meat factory was creepy too.
They're actually were a couple reasons as to why the release date was pushed back for GTA III back in 2001 and it did have a lot to do with the 9/11 terrorist attacks. For one they had the change the color of the police cars because at the time they resembled how the NYPD please cars looked. And for that Rockstar has claimed that day did change the color of them from Blue to Black in the game to where they didn't resemble the NYPD police cars. Also GTA III was the very first Grand theft Auto game to feature planes taking off and landing and so they had to change up the flight patterns for the planes to make it look like they couldn't fly anywhere near the tall buildings. Also allegedly there were two skyscrapers in the games that did resemble the twin towers but I don't know how true that is but apparently they were removed after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Now as it pertains to school buses to my knowledge the only time the school buses appeared in the Grand theft Auto series we're only in the very first game and then Rockstar has claimed that the reason why school buses were removed because they didn't like the idea of putting children in danger. And so for that the only time you really do see school buses in any GTA game are in junkyard portions where they're non-accessible and unusable for that matter. And police officers some of them originally had mustaches, the American release of Grand theft Auto III the box art cover had a different design and the reason why it was changed was because they deemed it as two graphic. And apparently originally players were given the option to actually blow up airplanes with a rocket launcher and that was another thing that was removed from the game because of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. And also as it pertains to the kill frenzy rampage missions you can still earn points even if you shoot pedestrians instead of gang members. I think that was a bug that was left in the game that Rockstar never fixed.
I played GTA 3 when it came out waaaay back when, but I don't think I'd ever heard of Darkel until within the past year. I think the little snippets of info we have are fascinating in their many possible implications.
Grand Theft Auto III was my first GTA game. And after all this years it is still my favorite GTA. It always feels so dark, melancholic, creepy and I would even say mythical. It differs from other games in the series. And I believe it absolutely still has some unsolved secrets that, one day, will be found. I'm so glad that there are people who still make a content about GTA III and I always love to see it.
@@TheDaeFluent Oh yeah, remember that Easter egg where you could go into an abandoned apartment and find a bloody pillow with a bullet hole and rap music playing in the background? Creeped me out as a kid
I miss the dark, creepy side of early GTAs, elements that would fit more inot Manhunt games. Especially GTA 3 had a really unique atmosphere, you could feel that something is wrong with th whole city. And then there was the Kingdom Come mission burned into my mind wen I played it as a kid. It would be nice to see some of this in GTA VI.
It was fate that Rockstar removing Darkel and his gang of psychos. As those missions would had already added more fuel to the fire, because of the game being released in 2001. The government was already hellbent on taking down Rockstar. And that character alone could had put an end to the company as his missions were the very definition of domestic terrorism.
I began to watch this video with a bit of scepticism since I knew about most of the Darkel things before for years and I thought this would be just another video oversensationalising the role of that cut caracther. But you still caught my attention with that Liberty Tree article which mentions "Boomshine". Although it's a seemingly minor thing compared to the others it's in my opinion one of the most important clues that R* actually had in mind a much bigger role for those weird hobos than most people think. Though I did knew about the Liberty Tree site, it never caught my attention before that it mentions "Boomshine". You see in general gameplay the first time we hear about "Boomshine" is in Vice City released a year after III in Phil Cassidy's misssions, but there indirectly it plays a quite important role as it is revealed that Phil lost his arm due to messing with that. So even though R* always tried to downplay on Darkels original role in the game, it seems like they thought about the lore of the crazy tramps and their weird poisonous homemade cocktails early and long enough that they brought it back in one way or another in VC.
There was nothing really disturbing about this character despite the spooky music used in the video. Everything suggested his mission would be are totally in line with the GTA universe. If they though he was too disturbing then they would have also changed about 90 per cent of the game.
Compared to some of the characters we got, he really isn't all that dark. I mean Niko Bellic told a story of how he witnessed 50 children, all sitting neatly in a row, against a church wall, each with their throats cut and their hands chopped off. That by itself, makes Niko's backstory one of, if not thee darkest GTA Character backstory. Don't get me started on Eddie Low from GTA IV who was a sadistic serial killer who had no remorse for his actions. Or even Trevor Philips from GTA V. Thats the thing about Trevor, people don't realize how much of a horrible person Trevor is in the game. It is stated he would mutilate bodies, rape people, even kidnap them and give them off to a bunch of cannibals; shown to have manipulated Ron and Wade in order to make them entirely dependent on Trevor. Honestly its like Rockstar grabbed the worst qualities of all the GTA Protagonists and Antagonists and put them all together into Trevor.
You never see those things though. In this game you (supposedly) would’ve performed those actions yourself. Imagine if there were missions where you killed children as Niko in the way he witnessed or if you played Trevor and raped someone. It’s bad taste.
When was it ever stated that Trevor rapes people? The altruistic cult missions are most likely non canon and even then they literally backstab Trevor. It pisses me off how people view Trevor as this sadistic psychopath who kills people in his spare time for the fun times. He kills people who piss him off or try to screw him over. Let me get one thing straight he ain't no psychopath, sure he is insane. However, psychopaths are people who care about nobody other than themselves. Trevor loves certain people such as Patricia Madrazo, Michael's family, Lamar, Franklin, yes he does abuse Floyd but he still cares about him, he cares enough about Ron and Wade (Correct me if I'm wrong but Ron does mention that his married life was an absolute joke), he even bonds with Michael even after what he did to him and Brad. So if anything he's more of a sociopath who doesn't give a shit about the rules. To sum up, Trevor may push you around but he's definitely not going to betray you. He will only kill you if you try to screw him over or if you piss him off such as calling him a motherfucker or making fun of his Canadian accent.
RockStar's denials of the deletions of certain missions should be taken with a grain of salt specially after they were caught lying about never intending for Claude to talk.
Rockstars excuse is clearly fake, not as good or interesting as the rest of the game? The characters in this game are all pretty lame except for Salvatore, Catalina and Donald love, darkole would have been a good character in the game, also 9/11 definitely changed the game that’s why the love disappearance mission is in the game and you can’t fly the dodo probably
I have never played GTA III ever but it’s kinda funny how the newspaper article on the tramps in Liberty City ties in so well with the urban legend of Darkel. In the urban legend the character of Darkel is accused of orchestrating insane levels of violence and terrorism, so much so that Rockstar was forced to cut his character completely from the release version and all associated missions were removed as well. This is nearly word for word the picture the newspaper tries to paint of the homeless in Liberty City; violent murderous maniacs who can’t be reasoned with whatsoever. But reality tells us that this urban legend is a massive hoax mostly; completely imaginary and at odds with the actual character of Darkel, and the same goes for the homeless people who inhabit Liberty City. A ton of sensationalism and nothingness concocted by a headline grabbing clout chasing newspaper; aka the same exact phenomenon behind the legend of Darkel.
Sorry for the paragraph; I just found this really cool. Rockstar didn’t get enough credit for their world building and story development for their first few titles unlike the next gen releases of RDR1, RDR2, GTA IV and V. So now I’m forced to fork over more money for Liberty City and San Andreas, which I’ve also never played much at all. Even though I had swore off funding their murder of RDR2 and RDO…. 😂
This character has been so mythologised over 20 years that without some dedicated research it’s almost impossible to figure out what trivia about this character on the internet is true aside from that he existed. It’s like a modern Pythagoras.
I remember learning about this, imagine the negative press GTA would get today for doing something like this. Honestly i wouldn't care, they thrive off of controversy
No doubt the horrific events of September 11, 2001 played a critical role in Darkel getting cut completely considering the mission he gives Claude involve evil terrorism including bombing Francis International Airport. Though it’s interesting to think what could have been in the game if 9/11 never happened……

I disagree. The most disturbing character in GTA was Donald Love. Those morgue parties, his cannibalism, and how many people his properly development plans killed in Fort Stauton that made him a billion are way more disturbing than a fake rumor mission Rockstar debunked a few years ago.
People often forget about the disturbing un-cut characters who demand you provide them with money for snuff films. Hell, you even work for serial killers and mass murderering cannibals. Donald Love has to be the most extreme example I can find.

I've honestly never understood on why Darkel was ever made such a big deal out of, both by the media articles covering it at the time of the development, the fans, and Rockstar themselves. I mean, this is the same series where you're tasked to butcher a person because your mother thinks he's better than you, try to kill a helpless man tied in a plaster cast, murder a entire construction firm and bury their foreman under the cement alive because they just dissed your sister, etc. Darkel's missions, even those which the fans have theorized are actually 'less' darker than what the series actually has. Because I don't know, butchering someone and then selling him as meat at his own deli is far more darker than ramming a plane into a building.

He would then pay you on weapons rather than money. I must have spent hours looking for him back in those days. Fun times.

@@VitZ9 yes it's sad that we will never know
Disturbing is Claude saying ok to these Darkel's quests.
he will do anything for a reward
The missions were cut, but the model for Darkel himself is still active. He’s actually UNDER the alleyway with all the tramps out of bounds. Like Rockstar just moved him out of bounds right before the game came out.
Hobos/ or homeless bums you mean?
@@errorcluckstv Yeah, it's moreso due to 9/11 rather than likability. They cut stuff because of that attack.

"There may be more to it than Rockstar is telling us"
It wouldn't surprise me that he was cut because he was too much manhunt for GTA. -__-
Heck, it also wouldn't surprise me if Darkel led to the creation of Manhunt eventually. Dark drimy murder with colorful gangs and a lot of hobo aesthetics?
Not only that Darkel is the most disturbing cut character, but also the most interesting cut character

Rockstar said barely anything was changed, the game was 1% different. The only things that were mentioned by the devs were small things like the police cars went from blue to black and changing a planes flight pattern to fly further away from city buildings. The biggest change was making it so planes at the airport couldn’t be blown up
@@Jws20 They said that they removed some missions that were related to terrorism
@@EonServoXA no, they said they removed a mission that had the line terrorist in it because it was either easier than replacing the line or it was too obvious what the people in the mission may have been. I always love learning about things that were cut from a game especially if theres a story or reason behind it rather than just didnt have time to finish it or something wasnt working
Love how they managed to tie Boomshine into the game in such a crazy way.
And that was before Boomshine was canonically implemented later in Vice City. They didn't forget.
@@Zmeeed01 No they didnt
When Rockstar said that Darkel missions didn't fit into the storyline then i think there were trying to say that his missions were optional as well as, in GTA 3 Every character follows a introduction in the storyline, like this:
8-Ball meets Claude in Give Me Liberty
8-Ball introduces Claude to Luigi Gotterelli
Luigi introduces Claude to Misty
Misty introduces Claude to Joey
Joey introduces Claude to Toni Cipriani and Salvatore Leone
Salvatore Leone introduces Claude to Maria
Then Maria is the last person who introduces Claude to Asuka in Portland
The Question is that who would've introduced Darkel to Claude in GTA 3❓
There has to be someone who would've introduced Darkel to Claude in GTA 3 if he was really in the game.
Nobody introduced Claude to El Burro except El Burro himself, iirc.
It could've been a pager message like the payphone bosses. Or an easter egg, like Marty Chonks.
I would love to see this game in original form and Uncut Collector's edition for all 4 games gta 1-4

"Boomshine", considering they carry around molotov cocktails it's pretty funny.
If rockstar actually add characters like this one and missions like this in story the game would be really interesting
Even if Claude sticks to killing bad guys, he's still evil. Doing missions to kill random innocent civilians would make it worse.
Oh shit you made this video sooner than I thought you would lol 😅💯
but i mean a crazy a hobo that control a gang of other hobos do sound kinda cool
darkel sounds like the name of an evil clone of urkel
I've been looking forward to this.
@@gvd72 good way to put it.
There's a difference between a dark backstory and actually doing those actions yourself.
7:06 “all of these alleged missions were fabricated” and yet here’s my 12 minute speculation implying otherwise.
I like to imagine that atleast some of the Darkel missions where changed into what we now know as rampages in the game.
Darkel looks like the guy in a dark alley who is trying to sell watches that he hides in his jacket
I instantly liked the video when I heard the manhunt music. Very good video!
That thumbnail makes him look rather funny, if anything.
This character has been so mythologised over 20 years that without some dedicated research it’s almost impossible to figure out what trivia about this character on the internet is true aside from that he existed. It’s like a modern Pythagoras.

FYI that "helpless man" in a plaster cast was a scumbag plus you have no choice
