I'm an old original wave Shoegazer I'm 47 now and heard this in 93 and all I can say to the young people who love shoegaze and drone......I'm happy u guys, appreciate it because it was hard being 14 and,15 and trying to explain to a pre internet world the beauty of this music.... I was a hardcore kid.....until an older friend introduced me to Ride Nowhere....and I was immediately changed.... in that first 6 months I got to hear MBV loveless.....Chapterhouse....Swervedriver .....Curve......Catherine Wheel Medicine and many more.....as they were coming out!!!!! It was the most transformative time of my life. .Cheers geezers and gazers
Im 23 and I started to listen to shoegaze maybe 4 years ago. My tastes changed a lot in that span and albums that were “unlistenable” to me at the start, are often some of my current favorites. I think there is a learning curb with this genre a bit. Anyways, I realized I really enjoy the ethereal/melancholic/sleepy/wall of noise type of shoegaze. Well I envy you and what you lived through, and it was cool to read your comment
@beauyerks7413 yep I’m in the same camp too 47 was also listening to boat. There’s a band from the Hawke’s Bay in New Zealand called Looma. A nod to the name of an MBV song. Love the soundscape the guitar makes, though I’m certain Alister multitracks them.
wow, this rules. I love this kind of stuff. isnt it amazing that no matter how obsessed with music you are, no matter how much you know, you can always find new stuff from the past to fall in love with.
When I was living on Aro Street, one evening there was this primordial ground throbbing bone vibrating sound emanating from Bodega, just around the corner really. As I came through Aro park into the next street I asked my friend if the knew who was playing there that night. "Bailter Space". It was this song they were playing. I listened to it and really enjoyed it as i walked along two blocks away. It was probably the loudest band I've ever heard coming out of that venue. It sounded good.
Robot World, an unappreciated masterpiece. One of the best albums in rock history. They achieved a sound on this album that I think My Bloody Valentine's Loveless was striving for but didn't attain due to overproduction. Powerful, melodic, propulsive, and a concept album on top of that. The band at its peak.
Can remember hearing this song for the first time in the Punters Club Melbourne and being blown away completely. Around the time it came out, this song was flogged on radio.
ANOTHER NZ band I am way too late discovering!! Well at least I’m here now! And what a wealth of music to discover! The next several weeks are gonna be fun!!
one of the most sonic live bands i ever saw(at least 3 times) & i'm a late 50's pom who's seen 'em all including beefheart, hawkwind, motorhead et al-so i don't say this lightly-still play wammo on a regular basis
I saw them once in the 90s. I used to go to loads of gigs back then and, hands down, Bailter Space were by far the loudest. They did stuff off Vortura and Wammo, including At Five We Drive. One of my top 10 gigs.
Top albums that made up my life 1.JPS Experience Bleeding Star 2.Bailterspace Robot World 3. Pixies Trompe Le Monde 4. My Bloody Valentine Loveless 5. LSD and the search for God-Self titled 6. Cocteau Twins Milk & Kisses 7. This Mortal Coil- It'll End In Tears " All of us with wings"
Wow. Very cool to see NZ bands in anyone's top 10. I remember hearing the title track of 'Bleeding Star' on a generally half-arsed NZ music radio show around 1995 (probably on Hauraki. Aside: I remember they once played the same show two consecutive weeks by mistake. I rang the station to advise, and even as a 13 year old I could tell no one really cared). That wall of distortion, and the little motif that rings out amongst it. Still cool.
I was nearly forgetting about this masterpiece. I only had the "space" and the song name "x" in my head. Glad I found it again. Those guitar riffs Its something that I'll never forget about it.
Found the B.E.I.P. ep at a media shop for 4 bucks last year... I know you can get it online for around that price, but to see it where I live was incredibly surprising. Great band
Can I just say how fresh this song is. I keep playing it, sharing it, and listening to it. Reminds me of THE PIXIES, HUSKERDU, and SUGAR. It’s really difficult to produce SHOE GAZE that doesn’t sound like a copy. They did it. This is totally original. I do hear the influences. But that aside, it’s a nice piece of art that said.”
I remember seeing Bailter Space live at Arc Cafe in Dunedin NZ in the late 90’s. That gig has always stayed with me for how incredibly powerful it was, and how much it formed my musical landscape in the decades that followed.
In NYC? When? In the 90s mostly? I’m not even sure i knew they were living in NY, but aside from the Bowery show in ‘08, have there been other shows? I think i’ll beat myself up a bit if I’ve missed a lot since i’ve been back home in NY.
Love this song! I first heard it on The Trip 4 which I bought on CD in '94. Just got back into listening to all my old CDs from the 80-90's but would love to find a copy of Vortura. Pretty hard to find these days.
Ahh, remember Nelsh Bailter Space. I saw their first gig in 1987. On the way to New Brighton was the pub. Can't remember the name of it. Was it the Aranui? It was loud.
I really love this band...really love them. I missed this the first time around...a little too young. Anyways, does anyone know where I could buy their "greatest hits" record? All I have is "Robot World" and I just play it really loud in my car every other day...

Possibly the best NZ song, ever.
Agreed
Shihad had some good stuff, especially from self titled record. "Attack" for example or "A day away".
It's definitely up there!
It's an underappreciated absolute banger.
Massive ripper. Was it on the Trip 4 compilation?

You guys probably cant believe how good this the band is live. Changed my life in Wellington. Awesome.
yep, saw them many times but the best was at the PowerStation with HDU opening. HDU were stratospheric so Bailter Space were cataclysmic.
Flying Nun had such high quality bands
B Nice
Thank god for Bailter Space, when your day turns to shit, they always make things seem a little bit better.
Sadly missed from Spotify. Greatest song ever.
@I wish I was a vampire in the early 1990s really? I’ve still not found it
You think I'm your girlfriend
Or you could get it from Bandcamp
@I wish I was a vampire in the late 80s & early 90s Not in Australia, sadly. Glad it's playing where you are.
has to be one of the best songs ever. such an emotion-inducing chord pattern...
Those drums, that snare sound, particularly in this sonic context. Just awesome.
Ludwig LM400 Supraphonic. Great sound.

you're lucky with Spotify, their 90's albums are out of print and go for $ on ebay.
same here, but love this band!
This is a fantastic song

Iv'e seen them loads, my favourite live band. Last time was quite raw, like being inside a giant science experiment like the large hadron collider.
I saw them once in the 90s. I used to go to loads of gigs back then and, hands down, Bailter Space were by far the loudest. They did stuff off Vortura and Wammo, including At Five We Drive. One of my top 10 gigs.
@@themagus517 Yeah really loud, a true sonic experience. Loudest I saw was Dinosaur Jnr in Shibuya NHK hall back in 1992.
120 Minutes on MTV kept me waist deep in great bands like Bailter Space
Man, you were living the dream of all us NZ siders. Love you all until im dead
So awesome!!!!! I remember destroying my ear drums on my walkman day after day with this albumn of trippy psychadelic joy.

THANKS FOR THE HEADS-UP...just got my tix! Looking forward to a nice wall of sound...
Saw them last night in Auckland , didn't do X, however that's fine plenty of other 10 mins opi played.
That’s Gerry Marsden’s (Gerry and the Pacemakers) 12 String Rickenbacker (3rd one made) in this video.
@jpdkiwi Yes, they were f'n loud! Used to see them & play with them in NYC in the 90s! F'n loud, great band!
so perfect
I get stoked every time I see someone with a distorted Rickenbacker. Guitar is so versatile, yet you never see it in any harsher music settings.
Fugazi use to use one
The Mark of Cain use Rickies too. But you are correct.
he lost it in the back of a taxi too
@@eyelooksawaythenlooksback3077 Did He? That Rickenbaker 360 is worth a fortune.
One day it'll turn up at auction.

Hey, I guess you like these guys - I don't think I ever saw them live - I'd be deaf now. But they need to come to Florida now so I can see them...
If this came out now people would go crazy for it
Love this track, anyone know why it was removed from Spotify? Pissed me right off.
so hard to find this era of stuff.. the 80s stuff has all been reissued and promoted.. this on the other hand eep

Really accessible (??!!) stuff from the best of Dunedin-ChCh 1980's alt.rock....(tho' it wasn't called that then of course)

Does anyone have the lyrics? Were there ever even lyrics included in the CD, Cassette, or Vinyl releases?
Nope, no lyrics were ever in any Bailterspace release.
Does anyone know the chord progression/tabs?
probably, but i like his band :)
