    Artorias - and best doggo Sif, for that matter - will always hold a special place in my heart. Such a heroically tragic story, and absolutely heartrending depending on when you interact with... certain parts... This story is one of the biggest reasons I love the Dark Souls lore so much.

    • @Drocksas
      @Drocksas Год назад +15

      And, since it was mentioned near the end, the title "Prepare to Cry" is a clever play on words! The original tagline of Dark Souls' marketing was "Prepare to Die." And since From Software loves telling us tragic stories - usually through characters you directly interact with and can feel attachment to - you can see how the title was an easy pick!

After that I took time to learn about the story of each boss I fought and that’s when I began to truly appreciate how good the soulsborne games are.

    Fighting Sif is probably the hardest part of the game. Not for the challenge but for the heartache. As Vaati said, for the sake of completing your goal you need the ring of abysswalking; and though Sif is your friend, she is duty bound to prevent anyone from taking it. One of you will have to die. I highly recommend for the next Prepare to Cry do The Children of Chaos. It's actually even more heart-wrenching then Artorias and Sif.

  • @Animechargeblog

    The thing about Artorias and all of this story, is that we didn't know it until a year later when the DLC arrived. In the base game, we saw multiple references to him, his legend and everyone saying how much of a hero he was, so his legend wasn't just a tale in game, but also to us, players, until the DLC arrived and we saw everything that happened and realized: all those tales are about us, WE are the legendary knight who stopped the abbys in Oolacile. It was such an amazing way of telling a story, that only improved upon the released of Dark Souls 3 and all the references and missing story links being added.

  • @blackmane3641
    @blackmane3641 Год назад +21

    A nice detail. When you play Dark Souls 1 without playing the DLC. The fight with Sif is just a fight with a giant wolf, you don't know who he is, but you need Artorias's ring to move forward. In the intro before the fight starts, he sees you, grabs the sword and the fight starts, nothing special, so you just kill him and take the ring. But when you play the DLC before that fight, you help rescue Sif in the past and then you go to Artorias' grave in the present, the intro changes, instead of attacking you, he recognizes you, his face changes and expresses a lot of sadness, Because as VaatiVidya said in his video, he knows what you came looking for and he can't give it to you willingly, therefore one of the two will have to die in that fight. I still remember the anguish of having to fight him at that moment, because you have to kill him but you don't want to.

    You hear about Artorias a lot in the game, like a key named after him, finding his special ring, or tales of his accomplishments, so he's a bit of a legend when you reach him. The 'Prepare to Cry' title is (probably) based off the first game's release called 'Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition'. I am always prepared and I always still cry. The prepare to cry is a play on the Dark Souls title when it came to PC called Dark Souls: Prepare to Die.
    Yea fighting Sif is VERY sad as if you fight him before going back in time, he won't recognize you, but if you did then you get that scene of him recognizing you.
    And he doesn't act to protect Artorias but really to protect anyone from being infected/corrupted by the abyss, which is especially sad since Sif saw what happened to Artorias.
    Part of me is happy they didn't show the later parts of the fight as unlike most boss fights in Dark Souls where the boss has a harder second phase Sif actually grows more injured and desperate but keeps fighting which makes it all the more heartbreaking knowing the backstory.

    Prepare to Cry stems from the motto of Dark Souls, which is: "Prepare to Die". Because that is what you do in Dark souls. You die and die over and over, slowly crawling and clawing your way to the end and emerging victorious. If you fail to win and give up on the game before beating it, you are considered to have gone "hollow".

    • @dimlylit3086
      @dimlylit3086 Год назад +1

      WAIT so if you give up on the game canonically you've gone hollow?

    • @nesnahprotsdam
      @nesnahprotsdam Год назад +6

      @@dimlylit3086 Yes, it's a very philosophical defeat. You literally cannot lose in Dark Souls. The only way to actually lose is if you, the player, gives up.
      You will have to intentionally perform a very specific set of actions and glitches to hardlock yourself in the games.
      The whole point of going hollow ingame is when the undead loses their willpower or purpose to continue existing, much like when a player ragequits and never picks up the game again.

    Vaati doesn't explain it much in this video as he probably expects most people who watch this to have played the game. But part of the reason Sif (Best wolf in any game ever) is trying to stop you is because he's defending a ring that allows one to traverse the abyss, so Sif trying to stop you from ending up like Artorias. On a side note, that cutscene where Sif recognizes you and sniffs you only happens if you do the DLC and make a somewhat hidden detour to rescue Sif before you start that fight. Also, the part about Artorias leaving his shield to protect Sif is true, the part that is a "lie" is that he was the one temporarily halted the abyss. Though he tried his best sadly he ended up getting corrupted.

Then doing the game all over again ignoring the boss fight until finishing the dlc just to see if it changed the intro of the fight.

    ah souls lore has so much to offer yet its hiden so well XD.
    i love how you can side with karth and become the lord of the dark though.
    In souls, there is an age of light and an age of dark, both last for eons, but they change, when the fire fades, dark rises, and embers will rekindle the flame.
    However dark is not death, it is silence. its not madness, it is darkness. it isnt hot, it is cold, its notm war, it is peace. Not madness but serenity.
    For mankind, in souls lore, belongs to the dark, and the dark is the true power of man, the gods told them that they must fear the dark and fight their innter nature, yet that was just because the gods feared man, as man is the only thing capable of killing even a god.
    Also prepare to cry is referencing dark souls 1 edition "prepare to die" - there is an entire prepare to cry series on souls lore. id love you react to more ^^

    Fun fact about Artorias: The devs actually had plans for him to have voice lines. (If I remember correctly, that is the voice of Matt Mercer, too.) A lot more than the line about his failures were planned, including him begging you to kill him, asking you to find and protect Sif, and a few other lines. They cut it from the game because it was so hard to focus on the fight when you hear how much pain and emotional turmoil he's going through. (There used to be a mod that would put those lines back in the game, but I think it's gone defunct now.)
    He really is the ultimate 'fallen hero' trope in modern gaming. (Yes, I put him above Arthas, the Lich King from Warcraft.) The fact he is so uniquely strong of a character in the Dark Souls lore is made honestly more heartbreaking when you realize Raime, the Fume Knight from Dark Souls 2, was his soul resurrected (and even had his sword), and the Abyss Watchers are the Billy Badasses of the world of Dark Souls 3, inspired by Artorias' desire to fight to the bitter end... God, it just hits you right in the feels to know someone can be so driven by honor and duty that they'd lay themselves on the line and die to protect others.

    I think most dog owners might have a hard time facing Sif. As for me it hit hard old memories of my 1st dog at the age of 5, mom named her Dusky she was with me for 15 years. The quest line was heavy for me but when Sif remembered us I broke down.

    While playing the game and piecing the story together for yourself, it can be difficult to experience the emotions involved. Vaati has a way of telling these stories, however, that just yanks at the heartstrings. This episode was great, but the next one "Children of Chaos" literally had me in tears at the end.

    Dark Soul lore is so dense and compact that I'm surprised people who don't play Dark Soul even understand it just by watching lore videos.
    I'd recommend also check out same creator but video about Yhorm the Lonely Ruler and Siegmeyer the Adventurer which are far much more easy to understand their stories. The video about Artorias went a long about way to try and explain the problem in the world of Dark Soul and why Artorias was necessary. But the fore mentioned two well not so much I suppose.
    Also the "Prepared to Cry" is a play on the "Prepare to die", the original logo of Dark Soul 1 when they brought the game out to the PC instead of just Playstation.

    heartbreaking detail for me, if you listen carefully, you can here Sif whine after he sniffs. He not only knows who you are, but there much doesn't want to do this. But of course, both of you, have a duty to uphold.

    Ciaran actually loved Artorias, and likely never saw that romance through before he fell to the Abyss.
    Her corpse, presumably, is lying against the back of Artorias's gravestone, as there you can find the Hornet Ring, which belongs to her.

    Sif was still one of the most difficult fights in Dark Souls for me. Not because of the mechanics, I just don't like killing doggos. Especially when it's the goodest boi in Dark Souls. It was an honor to relieve Artorias of his pain and the fight you have with him is amazing.

    For more context to the lore. Not sure if this is cannon/accurate. Sif was not only protecting the grave of Artorias but also the "player" to ensure that what happened to Artorias, doesn't happen to anyone else.

    I have never played this game but binge watch so much Fromsoft lore videos that I think I might learn more from watching these then playing the games themselves (also, I am fearful of my own incompetence and being overwhelmed for I opened Elden Ring, Bloodborne and Dark Souls just to close it again...). I am glad they did not show the fight between our beloved Doggo and the mc, I do not know if the tears could have been held back if that were the case.
    Also, please tell me there is a small percentage of people like me whom have attempted or never played the Dark Souls series but is deeply fascinated by its lore?

      I find it awesome you can appreciate the lore and story building without playing the games. They're not for everyone but they give you plenty of tools to experiment and find what works best for you. Failure is the best teacher so as long as you're having fun with it, that's all that matters. I would suggest trying it out again

      @Dakota Cross Naw, the encouragement I received from you has me smiling and reconsidering an attempt. The funny part is I have looked into the enemies from games as well, researched their lore and movesets, but the character build and items are so vast. I am also not fully aware of the difficulty, for the most challenging game I have played is the Kingdom Hearts series on critical. The Dark Souls series is so different, and small mishaps are punished severely.
      How did you prepare for the Fromsoft games, and have you succeeded? Thank you again for the encouragement ♡

    Awesome video, on the topic, as you guys have previously watched lore videos, mostly like these Dark Souls/Elden Ring ones,
    Would you be down to react to Kirby lore?
    It's wacky as heck, and clashes a ton with the franchise's playful and cute front.
    The best recommendation I can think of is RPG Monger's "Attempting to Explain all of Kirby Lore in One Video", I think it's the name, they currently have two videos of Kirby Lore, but the first one, the one I mentioned is the most thorough but concise Kirby lore video in RUclips I believe.

I cry everytime i see that scene when he recognize us and start crying...is like hes saying..."i cant let you do it, if you really want to, you have to kill me first." Why am i crying?
