  • It’s December 26, 1994, the fog has cleared at Ancona, IL for our first two trains (all trains in this video are not edited for time).
    1) Santa Fe SD40-2 #5048 a second SD40-2 and what I believe are a pair of SD45 take a non-revenue train of empty TOFC cars west.
    2) SF SD40-2 #5060, SF B40-8W #581, and a nice ABA set of GP60s work an eastbound TOFC/stack train.
    3) SF GP35 #3872, SP GP60 4017, another SF GP60, GP35, and GP60M east on TOFC.
    4) Just west of Ancona, C40-8W ATSF#844 leads another Dash 9 a pair of SD40-2 and a Dash 9 west with TOFC just west of Ancona (guesses on locos).
We’re now further west, this time at Williamsfield, IL
    5) Eastbound empty Auto train with SF 5173, another SD40-2 and an SD 45 on south track. Note the whistle audio is clipped. Note green searchlight signal on north track.
    6) North track and right behind above, while passing another eastbound on the south track, north track hosts a TOFC train pulled by B40-8W ATSF #550, GP60 A&B set, and a Dash 9.
    7) Right behind above on the south track an SD40-2, SDF45 and three other bluebonnets on an eastbound mixed.
    8) Westbound Santa Fe B40-W leads what I think are a GP35, a pair of GP-9s, an F45 and a U36 on a mixed.

You can't get any more of an aura of what the Santa Fe was than this. Classic Santa Fe scenes, and some fast trains.

That horn on 5173 is gorgeous, but pretty eerie

As I watch this, especially that long departing angle on the train at the 6:00 mark, and I can't help but think; I wish I could see the same angle in the heady days of steam of the 40s and 50s, or with the F units in the 50s and 60s, when they had the high-ball and flew down the track at these speeds. That would've been a sight to behold!
Great video of some great catches. Very cool.

Dad and I had a blast. Have to agree. A SF Hudson rolling through Ancona with the CA Limited....well, you know.

Thanks for the great time capsule of the ATSF, Chuck. The mty TOFC flats were known as "baretables" and were likely enroute to Niota, IL for storage. Couldn't hold all those flats at Chicago Corwith, so they would declare them as surplus to TT, then after 5 days storage, TT would waive the per diem. I appreciate you showing the consists. Things have changed a lot.

Thanks for the note, William. Miss those days. Lot's more in the archives buy our video program is stalled and I can't figure it out.

Amazing catches, that last train had a BADASS lashup!! Man, I miss the Santa Fe! I saw a warbonnet about a week ago (it's on my channel) and it had better days, but I also saw a bunch more old power from the 90's that day. A sweet BN lashup of an SD60M and what I believe to be a GP40, and an Executive MAC on a coal train, as well 2 ATSF Geeps switching 2 different trains in the yard there.

Those second and third trains made a hell of a thunder coming around that curve!

Strange to see a third signal at Williamsfield. The track where the boxcars were stored must have been a signaled passing siding.

Was the audio from another train added in to the clip with 5173? Because it at first sounds like a K3LA with a dead 4a bell, but right as the train is passing, the sound changes to a SCREAMING S3L.

No, no overdub - it must be the region's acoustics.
