In all honesty, you have a crazy dynamic in your fingers. I love when a guitarist can use all the potential of an instrument using fingers and volume knob. You are one of the best out there.
There must be a thousand highly accomplished guitar players on youtube. You're the only one who's never boring. You have the mostly indefinable extra ingredients that make a guitarist great.
It sounds absolutely deadly in your hands. Top notch tone and playing. An inherently slight, almost cocked wah tone to those pickups. This was an enjoyable video. And whomever ends up purchasing that guitar, is a lucky person.
In my high school band, I had a MM - another guy in the band had the two pickup version, and another band member had the SG-shaped MM. I can't even remember where we got them, but it was before guitars were hoarded and old ones worshipped. I traded mine for a Strat, which didn't suit me at all, and I got the bridge all out of adjustment. I traded that toward an ES 330, which I kept until I got the strange notion that I was finished with electric guitars. I might add that I graduated high school in 1967.
Chris, I have a 59 with the fat neck and larger 7/8 pickup. It's a monster. If you're ever in the SF Bay Area you're more than welcome to come give it a play and use it in a show. I also have a 57 and 60 LPJ that you're more than welcome to take for as spin too. Thanks for all the great content and keep the spirit alive. Cheers my friend.
nice one.ive being trying to find one for 1 year now.all in states are good one.but shipping and vat is high.wish me luck.great video .and your playing is out of this world.🎵🎸🎸🎵🎵👍👍
Pat Travers was big on Melody Makers in the mid to late '70s. Travers' 1977 release of "Putting it Straight," on Polydor, shows him playing a MM on the cover.
Chris, just a quick note to say I appreciate you, not just your vids. Your playing is exquisite! But, I appreciate your approach and ability to “keep it real.” Much success to you!
Stunned and stunned again. You are easily the best lead guitarist to have ever lived. "Best" in the sense of bringing together craftmanship + art, playing skills and taste. I hope you will be lucky and bring a band together that helps you to create some signature pieces that bring your work where it belongs: in the rock'n'roll hall of fame. There is enough time for it.
I bought a 1964 Double Cutaway Single Pickup MM with original case, this past summer in excellent condition. I paid $1600 US. It has quickly become my favorite guitar over my LP , Strats, Tele, and Explorer . The tone out of the 60 year old Gibson single coil is butter. Sooo smooth.
This is my actually guitar (although now on hold) and it’s a lovely guitar. Thanks Chris for showing what it could really do. The new owner will be chuffed im sure
When I was in college in 1971-1972 one of the guys on my floor who I used to jam with had a Melody Maker. I loved that guitar and used to beg him to sell it to me but he wouldn't give it up. It was a double cutaway model in Cherry and was probably a mid 60's model.
Man, you really are something. And not judging just by this video. I've seen most of them. Gibson really needs to dial your number and bow to your wishes. All the best and see you next Friday!
Dang! Kicking myself now for trading in my early '60's MM for a Fender Mustang, but we all had to have the surfer look then. Never would have imagined the astounding tones you have exacted from one! Thanks for doing your homework on the interesting history, too!
Thanks for another great installment of FF. So funny; I bought a Melody Maker in 1976 at a Pawn Shop in Lubbock, TX for $125, when I was touring with a cheesy show band. Got back to L.A. and sold it for $1,100. Vintage guitars are always a good investment!
I used to own one of those,,it one of my favorites. Mine was a double cutaway and it would stay in tune no matter how bad I treated it. I lost it along with all of my other equipment and my house in a tornado! I AM thankfully that none in my family was hurt,,,,having said that I DO miss that guitar,,,,
Sweeeet! I’m glad you featured the MM! I own a 1960 with a patent sticker T - Top on the bridge. Mine has the 50’s profile neck, it fills my large hands nicely. Peace!
I love these little guitars...I have a collection of 145 guitars and I've been playing metal for 40 years and I've got pretty much one of each guitar...But I keep coming back to my Melody Makers...I have a '59 and a '65...Also a '65 Epiphone Olympic Special and a bunch of recent reissues : a 2003 "LP Melody Maker", a 2007 white reissue and this morning I ordered the new Joan Jett Epiphone model... I have guitars with locking tremolos and complex wirings but I keep coming back to my Melody Makers 😁😁😁 their simplicity and their ability to cover all territories...I use them all the time in my metal band and they deliver...And of course they sound incredible in Chris Buck's hands...
Your playing of this guitar using clean tones in the middle section was evocative of Roy Buchanan… really, really sweet. Thanks for another great listen, Chris.
I have a 1963 double cutaway, 2 single coils, with a lightening bolt tail piece. I have owned it since I was 14, 56 years ago. The neck is fairly chunky but I love to play it. A real sleeper.
Really reminds me of all the Epiphone Les Paul Specials you see these days. Thinner slab mahogany body with single volume and tone controls and the same sunburst finish.
My very first guitar was a 1959 3/4 scale with a very crudely installed set of humbuckers off an early 70's Gibson. Quickly outgrew it though. Guitar is gone but those humbuckers are still in use today! Nostalgia drove me to buy a 1963 double pickup model. Not the easiest guitar to play, but it looks cool as hell and will easily outlast me. Thanks for the vid!
Love these in depth editions of Friday Fretworks. Got to mention (again) I’d love to see a Neil Young Ol’ Black edition and also some episodes that delve into acoustic players like Nick Drake, Nic Jones, Bert Yansch etc. keep up the good work Chris. 👌🏼
My first electric guitar, a dual pickup Melody Maker. I played it through the stereo I had purchased in the Army. Eventually got a little 1-12 Guild amp. Then traded it of for a Guild Bluesbird. Killer outro Chris.
Chris you've got the most killer attack I've seen in a long time , aggressive but accurate, while still cool and chilled, I've known you were awesome for a while and know what else , I think that guitar really likes you ! it's got that look like a cute girl gets when she's crushin 🍺😎🤟
Excellent video as always Chris. I have a '67 melody maker SG 2 pickup which can be summed up in two words "bloody awful" hate the skinny neck, hate the tone the one working pickup produces. Still probably never sell it though.
Incredible outro jam! It's feels like a raging river but so smooth at the same time. On another note Gibson is the only brand that people have to make excuses when it's not priced outrageously high, lol
Gary Moore also used one fitted with a humbucker. You can see him at the tail of the Sydney Opera House with Thin Lizzy video. Think of that. A modified Melody Maker backed up Greeny.
Chris, I want you to know that nearly every single day I come here just to drool over your playing 🤤… thanks for making some of the best content on the internet 🤘
Got a recent MM and stripped out the single coil ....put in a pigtail bridge ...routed the neck and bridge for firebird minis ....popped in some Fralins ....new pick guard ...and shazam ....amazing!
I have a ‘63 and a ‘65 MM - both heavily modded (including humbuckers) long before I got them. I love them (esp the ‘65). However, I freely admit that they sound nowhere near as good as this fine instrument in your hands, Mr Buck. 👍
I just realized, Kirk Hammet has an Esp custom guitar that was also a signature model, the kh-3, I believe. I always thought it had a weirdly small and thin headstock, but now I realized his guitar wasn't supposed be a take on the Les Paul, it was a melody maker! It's the same headstock! Loving the tones from this guitar, so many different tones from that one pickup. Also, that last guitar solo is just amazing man.
Only you Chris, could make that horrible pickup sound so good... In mid '70's my DC Melody Maker with that anemic pup inspired me to have a humbucker mounted amidships... Cheerios
Hi Chris, nice you featured the Melody Maker! I have a 1960 single cut converted to a “poor man’s les paul” with a compensated bridge, 2 Gibson P90s, a tortoiseshell pickguard and in TV yellow. :) I love that instrument. The only thing lesser than a Junior is the amount of wood used, the timber quality is on par with a 60 Les Paul though that costs up to 200x as much … ;)
Jeeeez! Those first 2 notes speak more than some artists entire catalog!
Fuck sake, Chris! I actually spoke to ATB about that on Monday. You've just sent the price through the roof
In all honesty, you have a crazy dynamic in your fingers. I love when a guitarist can use all the potential of an instrument using fingers and volume knob. You are one of the best out there.
Yes, He could play a tennis racquet and it would sound good.
That opening jam, what!?! I had to listen to it twice and then go lay down for a little while. So good.
Hey Chris, your creative skills and unique style keep getting better and better. Hard to imagine that’s possible. Thanks for blessing us all.
There must be a thousand highly accomplished guitar players on youtube. You're the only one who's never boring. You have the mostly indefinable extra ingredients that make a guitarist great.
What an intro solo! Well done!
... and a great, informative video as well!
Thank you. You are incredible guitarist!
Thanks. Now everybody will be buying them and the prices will go up! 😎✌🏻
This is a sleeper. This is the first time checking it out. Thank you from across the pond in upstate NY. USA
What an intro !
Chris?!! WTF...stunning intro piece...speechless!
This guitar has a weird dreamy tone but that might be Chris doing his ChrisBuck-thing. Amazing playing but this guitar sounds strangely special.
Such a monster guitar player. It’s crazy.
I like the way you let the guitar know who is the boss!
Cheers Chris i loved this sound very tele to my ears.
Sounds flipping fab
It sounds absolutely deadly in your hands. Top notch tone and playing. An inherently slight, almost cocked wah tone to those pickups. This was an enjoyable video. And whomever ends up purchasing that guitar, is a lucky person.
Dude your playing comes from my soul. Thank you! Love you, super-bro
Hard to judge a guitar sound when you play outstanding and make them all sound good!

Great playing Chris - so good to see such a creative original style rather that the virtuosic shredding and cliches blues rock I'm so tired of.

Pat Travers was big on Melody Makers in the mid to late '70s. Travers' 1977 release of "Putting it Straight," on Polydor, shows him playing a MM on the cover.
Boom Boom out go the lights! Ha! Mr Travers had some shredding guitar players in his band back then!
Chris, just a quick note to say I appreciate you, not just your vids. Your playing is exquisite! But, I appreciate your approach and ability to “keep it real.” Much success to you!
Pat Travers played MMs pretty extensively especially early on in his career. Always made them sound great.
One the best intro's yet !
Have you ever listened his 55 all gold Les Paul intro? It is by far my favorite. Absolute fire!
That middle jam was so tasteful it absolutely amazes me
Come for Gibson, stay for the juicy riffs.
Thanks for the video, brother.
Love this! I have a 1967 and the pickup is very underrated. I get it out frequently and have a hard time putting it down.
Bro chris buck can fucking get down. Man. I just now seen your stuff, excellent. You have given this instrument many thousand hours. I love that
Love the warm love outro reimagined - awesome Chris!!
I really thought that guitar was going to explode during that opening! Jesus!
You truly ROCK Chris!!! Thanks for all your incredible skills and awesome knowledge!
Taught myself to play on an old melody maker and a fender Bronco amp.
Your outro solo was off the chain, mate. Well played! (as usual).
One of my favorite outros of yours ever! Great stuff, Chris.
That solo - WOW !!!!!!!!!!!

My dude, some of the finest playing I've seen on your channel. Wow.

Holy crap……that intro was the best I’ve seen, I reckon!
Chris, you could play a tennis racket and it would sound good.
fantastic playing again - great tones
Ooh.. you're getting good. Really good
WOW! Totally love the way you play. Very cool.
We need a playlist of just your jams back to back!

145 instruments? wow
@@artisticgm4647 It will be 146 next Wednesday actually...
Your playing of this guitar using clean tones in the middle section was evocative of Roy Buchanan… really, really sweet. Thanks for another great listen, Chris.
...thanks for doing this guitar Justice Chris:)
G Moore played one wirh Thin Lizzy in 78 I believe, in Australia during the tour
I have a 1963 double cutaway, 2 single coils, with a lightening bolt tail piece. I have owned it since I was 14, 56 years ago. The neck is fairly chunky but I love to play it. A real sleeper.
Great review of the MM. I think the Duo Sonic had one of the best sounds ever. I love all of your reviews.....fabulous playing.
Impressive intro! Of course, you could make ANY guitar sound fantastic...
It definitely sounds awesome when you are playing it!
Another great video Chris!🤘
Really reminds me of all the Epiphone Les Paul Specials you see these days. Thinner slab mahogany body with single volume and tone controls and the same sunburst finish.

Dude that guitar sounds sick!
Love yer style, Chris! Thanks as always for another great post.
My main guitars are a 64 and a 65 Melody Maker. They are incredible guitars and, thankfully for my wallet, underrated.
what a sweet sounding guitar thanks Chris
Every time you show a new guitar I get very excited then I remember I’m not you .
Loved the passion in the intro, absolutely fantastic playing! Came here via Tomo Fujita then Radioshop pickups....subbed 👍👍🎸💥😘
Love the outro
Great Solo! So Different from anyone I’m ever Heard you Play….So Sweet…
My first electric guitar, a dual pickup Melody Maker. I played it through the stereo I had purchased in the Army. Eventually got a little 1-12 Guild amp. Then traded it of for a Guild Bluesbird. Killer outro Chris.
Much love from New Mexico Chris, hope all is well.
Gorgeous playing Chris.
Awesome hearing the Peacekeeper!!! An essential on my pedalboard through my Vibrolux and my JCM 800.

It sounds really mellow and warm - and your playing did it justice. It has a Gibson sound alright but different than the Les Paul; I like it.
Wow super inspiring!

Your playing skills are insane brother!!
when will you release your intros/outros turned into full songs?? Right now I would listen to that a lot more than any band
As soon as I hear “Hi I’m Chris Buck,” I know I about to be embarrassed with my guitar skills. Nice job as always.
So, yeah, I really thought you were going to smack us in the face with the headstock on that Outro jam.
Got a recent MM and stripped out the single coil ....put in a pigtail bridge ...routed the neck and bridge for firebird minis ....popped in some Fralins ....new pick guard ...and shazam ....amazing!

I really hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it's probably not the guitar mate. He could make a 2x4'' with rusty nails sound great.
@@SchmaexiMcMaexi 100% true that 👍
