Great Information. I see that taking the route you did to own a car in Europe as one option. The other option is to ship a vehicle to Europe from the US like a lot of RVers and vanlifers have done. The one-way cost is similar to the upfront costs you had with purchasing your vehicle in Bulgaria. Thanks!

This opened up so many avenues, like I can have my whole family on the business and they all can drive when they are over there. Are there places to leave you car at some secure place, so when needed by a family member we can access it? As always thank you very much. You are doing a great job and you are inspiration to all of us.
Check with our attorney Dimitar on having additional family members on the company docs regarding driving the car. Julie and I are the only two officers of the company and our names are on the paperwork of the company so it matches up with our car registration, we have not explored trying to have our adult children on it for instance or giving permission. It would probably also need to be checked with the insurance company.
Regarding parking, since we always have our car with us I can only let you know that when we stop in different cities and we know we’re not going to have free parking we will find somewhere and Look for a monthly parking rate. We have seen places with annual parking rates as well. The longer you pay for parking the lower the average cost. We had a month-long parking space in Istanbul, and I just finished researching long-term parking for our car when we go to Kraków as well as Budapest. It really will depend on what city you’re planning to put the car in. Keep in mind if you’re using Bulgaria you need to be there every year The same month 30 annual registration is due. Potentially if you’re not planning to be in the country you can have somebody with power of attorney do this that you would probably have to pay to accomplish this. dimitar@lpc-bg.com

We now have the answer to this. It is not. We have no money in a Bulgarian bank. We just did a tax video and released it two days ago.

We don’t have to do much with the Bulgarian corporation. We are not residents of Montenegro at this time, but strongly considering the corporation route and we did apply and get our Turkish residency, but because of the rules for our car 90 in 185 out we have let it lapse.

Makes sense if you travel all the time and have dogs. But I am thinking, if you don’t need the car for 365 days a year (say you spend a few months a year outside Europe) and you can rent one for 9 euros a day it may be better renting considering your one off and ongoing costs (40 euros a month for your address, X euros a quarter? for preparing tax returns for your Bulgarian company, annual travel for MOT, vignette, other potential costs related to having a company in the EU plus car maintenance, repairs, long term parking when you are not using it etc.
We weighed the pros and cons, for us it makes sense. Car rentals you have to return and rates fluctuate with the season.

If you were coming to Europe And wanted to explore the Balkans, Belgrade is a good jumping off place, and a good place to rent a vehicle for long-term.
I think i would rather rent the car then go threw all that hassle to buy
In the US, because of a lack of supply and other problems caused by the lock downs, it would easily cost $1000 for a week here, that is, if you can find a car!
Great video :) I've been driving throughout Europe with my FJ (shipped over from CA) since 2015. Hundreds of $$$ per month are spent on insurance (green card covering EU, and then separate "frontier policies" every time I cross into Serbia, Turkey, Macedonia, etc.) Does your Bulgarian insurance cover countries outside EU / Schengen, or do you need to purchase separate policies when entering certain countries in the Balkans?
Our insurance covers pretty much everything in Europe, it can even go into Iran. I do think we need extra coverage going into Kosovo.

Update for Turkiye, the car under a corporation is limited to 90 days then it must be out for 185 days. We were caught off guard by this.

We were actually planning to do this in July but via Georgia since can register a car there too but Bulgaria seems to be closer to other countries in eastern Europe
We did pay an import tax to Bulgaria, it wasn’t to high. The total cost is in the video. I think Bulgaria will probably be an easier option for you, you will need to return annually to renew your registration / MOT
Makes me wonder, if you have property in Montenegro, why not get temporary residency via their residency via property option? Then you could probably just use your temporary residency as a basis to register with in Montenegro. That's what I will likely do in Serbia if I do plan to get a vehicle. As we explained in some other videos that you may not of seen, residency with property ownership in Montenegro requires you to stay in the country for 11 months out of the year with some exceptions you can go out for two months per year. If you owned a corporation you would have a minimum monthly tax, and in the case of two individuals wanting to travel we would need to corporations. So it’s much less expensive for us to go through Bulgaria, since our goal is to travel the majority of our time and not be locked down in one country..

I just applied for residency here in Serbia through registering a business but hadn't heard anything about a minimum amount of time in the country (other the usual 183 days to be considered a resident). I wonder if it's one of those Balkan 'written on paper but isn't really enforced' things but I'm sure you guys want to play it by the book. Well either way you've solved the issue now! :)

Yes Bulgaria would probably be the cheapest in EU for car insurance, I just paid 280 euros off the bat for a year in Cyprus but my non resident registration process was a lot simpler, no company formation needed, just a real estate lease for a year to put it into my name.
We were pleasantly surprised with these costs. 😊

@@WarrenJulieTravel not sure if you plan on getting an EU drivers licence but that can also be a bureaucratic nightmare in most countries, especially if you want to keep your US license and sit a driving test, Cyprus is pretty simple if you can handle driving on the left, have EU residency and 6 months of Cyprus electric bills.
Only liability insurance, they did a good job.
I don't know how did you come up with Berlingo but it's not so bad choice. I wonder if anyone told you the following things:
- The ride quality of Citroens is superb, almost unmatched by any other car manufacturer in the world. But this comes at a price. Some repairs can be quite expensive.
- French cars are not known as durable on bad roads although they are of higher quality than Fiats. Pot holes will make your suspension last at most 2 years and then you need to have some repairs. They cannot match German cars on this. German cars are almost indestructible.
- If it has a manual gear shift the clutch replacement on diesel cars is very expensive, it can cost 500 euros or more in Serbia.
- Did you check the heaters for engine start and the battery? If any of these things is not in perfect shape you might be unpleasantly surprised on the first very cold morning in autumn that the engine won't start.
- If you pour fuel on a suspicious gas station with dirt in the station's reservoir your engine might die just after that! It requires perfectly clean diesel. Be careful where you're refilling!
I love Citroens, when they work fine. But they are fragile, relatively expensive to maintain and for me the minus is the diesel engine.
Julie compared 20+ Models of vehicles, looking at mileage, storage space, length of vehicle, cost and availability of repairs throughout Europe, reports on dependability, and Price, It definitely was not a snap decision we were down to about four vehicles a month ago and the last German one was eliminated due to much lower gas mileage and less storage space. If there are repairs as in the clutch, we are prepared for that financially.
@@WarrenJulieTravel If the mileage is important for you (you plan to travel a lot) this is the best decision. There's a funny reason why German cars spend more gas. They are generally heavier than corresponding French ones, more metal. It's traditionally like that. But this comes at a cost of slightly less safety in French cars.

Just, please, please take care where you top up, I've seen many diesel engines die just 15 minutes after refilling. This probably has HDI engine which is notoriously sensitive to fuel quality. This is most probably the most sensitive engine in Europe. Use only petrol stations of well known brands.
You can estimate the clutch state by yourself. The clutch assembly for diesel cars now standardly has "floating flywheel" which is what makes it expensive. This flywheel eliminates shaking from the diesel engine and jerks when releasing clutch pedal. If you don't feel these effects then it's in a good state. The amount of wear in the clutch is easy to determine. You slowly release the pedal until you feel that it's starting to move the car. Notice the pedal position when this happens. The higher it is the clutch is more spent. For a new clutch it's about 10% pedal distance from the floor to released position.
Hey Julie since youre not an EU resident, do you use an international driver's license to drive in Europe? And are you restricted to 90 days max per 180 days in Shengen area?

Out of curiosity, what kind of corporation did you register that has zero monthly costs? As far as I remember, here in BG a company always has to have a manager and they need to pay social insurance of around 180 BGN/mo. How did you get around that?
Not sure of those requirements, we have a corporation not making money. You can contact Dimitar for his input.

The attorney set up our bank account and that was part of our agreement with him for the €520.
The fees that we have to pay each year are the MOT which is the inspection and it’s approximately $40. We have to renew our insurance each year. The attorney charges to use his personal business address. That is a discussion you would need to have with him as he has different programs. They are all very reasonable. The car was shipped from Germany to Sofia Bulgaria where we got our original temporary plate so that we could drive it to the town that we formed our corporation in, Veliko Tărnovo. We had to register it in that town because that’s where our company is formed. The attorney assigned one of his colleagues to assist us at the DMV and we were issued a permanent plate. We have next to no restrictions as to countries we can visit. The restrictions we face our through our insurance company. We had to pay an eco-tax bringing the car from Germany.. I do not believe your cost would be significantly higher with a 20,000 or €30,000 car. These are all great questions for the attorney that can be found in the description of the video. If I recall correctly, the cost to register is dependent upon the horsepower of the car not the value. Again, you would need to consult with the attorney on this.

That was the total with additional fees. Rates can fluctuate at different times of the year, we looked hard for the best deal possible.

Can you take the rental cars out of Serbia to other nonboring countries? if so, Any specific docs / insurances you would need? Did your US insurance or credit card insurance cover? (I know that some Amex cards cover international insurance too.
Yes, with a green card given by the car rental company, we took Serbian cars to Macedonia, Montenegro, and Bulgaria, very easy. It will cost a little more for the green card, check cost before booking. I think we paid $44 equivalent extra, some charge by the country. Yes Amex coverage applies but I think it’s only for 45 days maximum, we paid Amex extra, I think $25 for 45 days insurance.

Wow $186/ €160 insurance for a whole year. That's what I pay each month for my car here in the Netherlands.. Road tax is €68 a month as well. If it wasn't illegal for a Dutch citizen I would register my car in Bulgaria as well haha. Also, be glad you did not register your company and car in NL. Here you have to pay ''bijtelling'' (luxery tax) on every KM you drive privately in your company car.

As far as I know, in the Netherlands you are allowed to drive a company car on foreign place. Check it out but I lived there four years and thats what they said at the Belastingdienst.

Yes the attorney is in Veliko Tărnovo. We had no problem taking our car anywhere in Europe, but watch today’s video. We had a problem with the car staying over 90 days in Turkey.

No we own a home in Montenegro not a business. Watch our Residency in Montenegro video. We would have time restrictions to be out of the country as a home owner, and a business had a minimum tax for both of us. We just do 90 day or less visits.

It’s a nil Corp so there is no income to report. We aren’t on a trip, we are long term slow traveling so we haven’t thought about any cost to dissolve the Corp. Here is Dimitar’s email he can help answer that question.

@@WarrenJulieTravel ok cos I also have nil corp in quite a few different countries for various reasons, and although there is no income, there is still a requirement to be audited to show there is no income and to submit a no income statement to the local tax authority. You might want to check it out as usually the lawyers are not aware of it and the tax authorities levy a huge fine for not submitting by the timelines, even for a nil Corp. I could be wrong though but best to check just in case
Thank you for the info. I'm an American owner of a home in Croatia. I can register my car as long as I have a valid residence permit BUT my permit is not renewable. I can only reapply after 6 months, I must leave Schengen etc. I'm in a dilemma because I want to drive my car outside Schengen. My attorney here is looking for a solution.

What is the diference Citroen vs Fiat? Can you compare the two cars?
The Citroen we bought had more storage, better gas mileage and more horsepower than the 500L we were renting.

@@WarrenJulieTravel Be mindful of Bulgarian regulations in regards to driving with a non-EU issued driving license (that I do not know specifically but I have lived and driven around in Europe a lot). In most EU countries you can only drive up to a year on it, if you are not a resident. As you have a Bulgarian company and you need to go back there every year, my guess is that if you are stopped, the authorities could argue that you are not allowed to drive with your US licenses any more. In most EU countries if you have an accident and you do not have a valid license, that can void your insurance cover, too. Take care!
Why not buy and register a car in Germany .. you at list avoid transportation fees ?
As we were trying to explain in this video you can’t just do that. As Americans you are very limited on how you can have a car and use it in Europe without a residency. A few other countries have similar options but the cost of setting up a corporation is much higher and/or there’s minimum monthly taxes. If you are European no problem go for Germany if you wish, Not feasible for an American or Canadian or Australian..

@@LKalyuzhny we used skyscanner.com when we were renting. We never had a problem, of course there could be additional charges for car insurance and other optional expenses. So do your due diligence. I can’t tell you if there are any dishonest car rental agencies.

Hello, yes we are struggling with only one company. The company is opened and has its company number, but the Trade register in Bulgaria didn't like the certification of the documents for putting owner's name in the company, made by the customer in other country, and now the case drags in the court, what caused us plenty of additional costs at our expense, haven't asked from the owner. I would like to say, that we informed the customer/owner for this, and he is in a full knowing of the situation, the owner of the difficult company is not @AshleighHarnwell. Anyway, we are happy to offer 2 options: 1/ Coming in Bulgaria and certifying of the documents on the proper legal way, what will sort the issue out; 2/ Full refunding, if the customer is not patient till the approving court procedure finish, or to travel and complete in Bulgaria according the legal requirements. Let he contact us! /Note, all the stated above is in force under the condition that all of us we speak for the same company and owner, we don't recognize @AshleighHarnwell as the same and didn't have touch with this person/. Can the corporation be in the US?
I was about to say No, but I thought it out for a second and must say I don’t know. Obviously there are American companies in Europe that have vehicles. I assume they would be under their European branch and registered and insured. I’ve never heard of anybody doing this personally. I assume if you can get it registered in Europe under an American corporation and get covered with insurance it’s possible. However this has never been tried by an individual to my knowledge.
