I’ve been struggling with insomnia the past few weeks. My husband, who can be rather pushy, had me look up military techniques to falling asleep. I tried it last night and wah-lah! I slept through the night, with only one kitty-provoked wake up. But… I fell back to sleep. I got 8 hours total!

Last night I woke up a few times. Normally, I would turn the bedside light on and read or surf/scroll. But each time I felt myself waking up, I made a conscious effort to say in my mind… “Don’t think” and I fell back asleep by the 3rd or 4th time. It works.

I’ve been practicing this technique for well over 30 + years, even to this day, now that I’ve retired from the Military. It has helped tremendously in those times of war, but as I transferred back into civilian life. There are many stresses in life that are not associated with the high stresses, and demands of military life. But there are associations of stress that build up, even in civilian settings. This is a very good technique 😇🙏👍

You are the first veteran I've heard use this technique. All the others say they never heard tale of it in their entire lives, and the only "fall asleep fast anywhere" technique the military uses is keeping their entire workforce in a constant state of sleep deprivation. Seems like a terrible way to do things but I think the only people who think the military would certainly not do anything ever in a terrible way are lifelong civilians. I feel like the special ops community though must have some good sleeping techniques, since they don't live the same day-to-day lifestyle and yet manage to sleep on their flights to their assignments.

    3) Start counting your breathing on every exhale BACKWARDS from 250. If you loose your count you have to start over from 250 again. It clears your mind becsuse you can not think of anything distracting.

It works even better if you flex and hold the muscles for a few seconds and *then* relax them - if you’re already tense from stress it’s not so easy to just relax your body because you can’t feel the tension unless you use each muscle group. Also, this exercise in itself empties the mind and I’d usually be asleep before finishing. You adapt, and pretty soon you’re taking power-naps in trees and on rock, anywhere your body was stationary for more than two minutes - especially if you had a Bergen on to lean against, or back to back with a buddy.

Thanks for this video. Some other things I've tried:
    1) Listen to sleep guided meditation/sleep stories/easy audiobooks
    2) Focus on breathing slowly: controlling my breath actually helped me control my thoughts
    3) If you have a tendency to think of scenarios, use that to your advantage: create some relaxing mental scenes and replay them
    4) Cut down sugar and don't consume chocolate/caffeine after 5pm
    5) If you have a sedentary lifestyle, tire your body out a bit through exercise
    6) Drink chamomile or other calming herbal fusions (not right before bed though as they can be diuretic)
    7) A warm shower before sleep and cool room temperature helps.

When I start having thoughts that keep me awake at night I think no not now, not now. I put those thoughts away for the night knowing that they are not more important than my health. Like the songs say what will be will be but I will not let it bother me tonight. Telling those thoughts to go away really works don't let them control your life or make you sick. Just tell them to go away.

👍 I was taught this many years ago, as an insomniac. To help relax your face, make a big surprised smile, then let it all go slack. The same will work for other muscle groups. I also found, in my own awareness, that if I think about factual events, I can't doze off, but if I create fictional events, I will soon get sleepy. My problem was either stressing about the day I just had or worrying about the next day I'm about to have. I had to practice making myself understand that it's time for sleep and everything else will wait.
Thanks for sharing this. 👍 😴

This is basically an old yoga technique. Years ago I had an accidental out of body (OBE) experience with this. I didn’t know what I was going through when it happened. Both eyes closed, in complete darkness I suddenly found myself floating in mid air towards the ceiling! And I could see very well even though I could feel my eyelids closed! I kept going up, moving ahead of the bed and once near the ceiling I was afraid I would hurt myself if the phenomenon stopped because I would have fallen on a hard wood floor! I quickly figured out how I got up there: curiosity. Some reversed the process. I told myself: I want to go back in bed, repeatedly. And it worked. A few days later, after talking with friends I realized I had experienced an OBE.

@@x093l not yet. I tried it for a few weeks and although it made me more relaxed, I wouldn't say it helped. Although, I have been sleeping better because I'm less stressed and I read before bed. I would say that not having anything stressful on your mind and reading a book if you can't sleep helps.

This is basically a Body Scan and a part of a meditation technique. I meditate every day, and a body scan is included in my 7 Phase meditation, but the first thing I do is 11 deep breaths, inhaling through the nose, holding it and making sure my stomach is blown out fully, then exhaling through the mouth until my tummy is flattened like a pancake. After 11 of these, I am much more relaxed. I'd recommend that first, then go for the body scan, afterwards. Cheers.

I learned this technique in Lamaze class. The only difference is we started from feet up, repeating to ourselves, each part is “heavy and warm”. It works like a charm. I don’t know why I don’t think of doing it when I’m tossing and turning at 3 AM.

The words I used every time I'm feeling disturbed or distracted when trying to sleep is white. When I repeatedly think of the colour white, my mind instantly sees white like an open space and a white light. This enables me to feel tranquil and serendipity as if I'm carefree and it helps to create a blank but relaxing feeling. A feeling drifting into a blank nothingness.

I have trouble with sleep, and one thing that I find crazy is that sometimes when I fall asleep fast my mind isn't clear at all. I'll be thinking about something, then I realize that my eyes are closed and I'm mostly asleep, then I wake up. It's as though the thought "distracts" my mind from being awake, and the realization of that reminds my mind to be awake. Also, sometimes when this happens my thoughts morph into dreams before I realize that I'm falling asleep.

This is popular with hypnotist too. I learned this year's ago and it makes you feel almost numb with relaxation. The trick is to be in tune with your mind and body and to really tune into each individual muscle, it might take practice to get it just right for your own body but it's worth the effort to have that connection.

My brother was a private pilot. He said to fall asleep, think of preparing to do something you love. He loved flying so he would mentally go through his preflight, do his walk-around, climb into the plane and would fall asleep while putting on his head phones. He could also take a 20 minute "power nap" anywhere.
I love to ride my horse so I think about putting on my boots and helmet, walking to the barn, cleaning my horse's feet, and fall asleep brushing him. Works every time, at least in a non-war scenario.

I imagine a dark room with a door and each time I go into the next room it is darker, and darker and then boom. Sometimes I fall asleep yet I am still aware of my surroundings, I am paralyzed I can feel my body is sleeping but also sense I am conscious of where I am.

I do a version of this, only I start at the extremities. 1: Lie down, get as comfortable as possible so there's nothing poking or otherwise calling attention to the bed or your body. 2: Deep breath, exhale and go as limp as possible. Feet, hands, arms, legs, hips, shoulders, back, stomach, chest, neck... When you think you're totally limp, go more limp. (See, you weren't totally limp after all.) 3: Concentrate on your nose until you become unaware of the rest of your body. Focus on the details of your nose. Feel your breath going in and out of your nostrils and notice the change in temperature. Notice your pulse at the tip of your nose. Focus... Focus... Everything else melts away and..................................
