Picnic Napkin Fabric Caddy - Fun Tutorial

  • Welcome back, Shiny Crafty People!
I came up with this idea one day and broke down how I’d make it and then shot the video before finding two really fun other alternatives by other sewing creators. While I really love my solution, you should check out those others by typing something like “napkin caddy sewing” into the search bar.
This project takes just four pieces of fabric 8” square each and one piece of batting the same size. You could skip the batting if you want but I like the way it gives the caddy some form even with just a few napkins in it.
If you love my iron, check out this link to find it on Amazon: amzn.to/4dTnUHG
    Until next time, Stay Crafty!!

For Christmas, make a bunch for the family to keep in their cars for all of the extra napkins you get at the fast food places.

Suggestion: Sew in a couple of weights on the top stitch side. That would keep the remaining napkins in place when people pull a napkin out.

This would be a good idea for "left over" holiday or Birthday napkins to keep them from getting wrinkled in drawer.

This is great idea to keep in the car instead of a roll of paper towels, that just roll all over the place, or a tissue box, that'll get squashed. I'd make mine bigger. Then while watching TV, I'd pull off paper towel segments and fold them to fit inside it.

Tim - I loved this idea! I made notes as I watched and so far I have made 5 of them. Hardest part was selecting pieces to go together from my fabric stash. I gave one to my neighbor and she loved it and wanted to know how to make so I gave her my typed instructions. I see so many places this clever little napkin holder will travel to. Will also make a perfect hostess gift for the cookouts and invites to neighbors for a drink and snacks.

I love this idea. It is easy, practical, and pretty. It would also be good for a Long Car trip, where you might snake in that car and a napkin would be useful. But I do have two comments. First, pre washing. You said if it isn't going to be washed often, it is not a problem. It only takes one wash to shrink and item. I know this too well. I tend to pre-wash everything for that reason. But you have made it a little over sized so it probably won't be a problem. The other thing to know is that you could repair your cut of the batting, by using a zig zag stitch. I do that to use up my batting scraps the save $$$. I apreciate that you showed how to have less buck at the corners and demonstrated how it maks a difference. Thanks again for a great project.

I love this idea for carrying the disposables. We do family camping potluck meals and I always want to take a turn at providing the paper stuff for one of those meals. This would be a great way to carry all the paper napkins, plates, and plastic ware from camper to table without everything blowing around or getting crunched. I will make a caddy for each: napkins, large plates, small plates, and perhaps even bowls. Now I'm plotting a pattern for plastic ware. i feel like there could be a smaller doubled rectangle across the top and a larger doubled rectangle on the bottom that is sewn with 3 dividers to separate them all. The top rectangle could be folded back the same way you folded the top triangle. Also, you made me really nervous when I saw you pressing the fabrics on your cutting mat. Thanks for a great summertime pattern idea.

Tim …just in time for my cottage trip coming up! We can eat outdoors without putting a heavy object on my stack of paper napkins from flying in the wind . Great gift idea for my next door neighbour who goes finishing during the summer … he usually brings me a fish that he cooked so I don’t have to cook the main course . Really nice man …now I can make him a gift in appreciation.
Thank you for the lesson ! Including the errors …it’s how we learn ….
