I know a bar that hired a Dub / soundsystem band for a gig and the bouncer didn't let some people in because they wore harem pants lmao. Also they stopped the gig halfway because it was too loud.

My God. This is beautiful. The last time I was at a lounge gig and someone told me to play quieter I just took a break for like 20 minutes, then when I couldn’t feasibly walk around anymore without getting fired I played improvised one note melodies at a RIDICULOUSLY SOFT dynamic until they left. They left me a $20 tip and without any hints of sarcasm told me I sounded great.
I wanted so badly to hate their guts....but I also liked having $20.....
Back in the 80's I was touring Canada with a band doing everything from cabarets to stadiums - we had our own large-ish sound system with 2 Soundcraft boards. A tech friend had whipped up a "blender/buffer" for the two mixers that had a huge (6"?) knob right in the middle. Sat right in the middle of the FOH rack.
Sometime later we began submixing some things on stage, and eliminated one of the Soundcrafts - and the blender become useless. But there it was - this gigantic knob smack in the middle of the rack. So we slapped a big "volume" label on it - at smaller clubs if mgmt asked us to turn down, our sound guy would make a big show over reaching over and turning the giant Volume knob - look at the bar guy/gal and say "better?".
You'd be surprised how often we got away with that trick....
I have played several shows where I get asked to turn it down a bit. I am an acoustic player and singer, with no backtracks or drums etc and still get asked. I have 4 channels and only use 2. When asked initially, I always hit my loop pedal and then go walk about and check sound. Then make a big show of turning down all knobs on the 2 channels I do not use.
Reminds me of a friend of mine who made a rack mounted unit with loads of lights and buttons and knobs on it that wasn't connected to anything. He called it the DFA2000, which stood for Does F*ck All, for when the house manager would ask for something unrealistic and impossible like "more energy, less aggression, more talent etc" and then he would just adjust the DFA until they were happy.
Imagine having her as a mom while trying to learn an instrument, oh Lord.
You'd never even be able to get the instrument.
You'd walk past it with a glance and she'd say
"That's ENOUGH! Wait till I tell YOUR FATHER about that attitude little man."
that‘s my life. i had to wait until i moved out. missed the chance to learn drums or guitar when i was 12 and had time. instead i played videogames with headphones - my mom was happy and i was wasting my time 👍🏼 but it‘s ok - i am fine with using ableton for everything now.

I was at an event once that had a couple musicians playing in a corned, when things called down a bit they asked me how they sounded, I said they were great but should play louder. They seemed genuinely shocked.

I don't get this. They are hired as background ambience, but they wish to play any which way they want.
One solution, use headphones to get a good sound to themselves, and let the outward bound sound be even quieter than is asked?
I've played hundreds of gigs that require a very soft touch, I've never had a problem playing whisper quiet. I call it "'easy money".
One point to consider, is that even at the softest levels, overdriven guitar sounds loud, due to the harsh nature of the timbre.
Above all, don't insult the guests or the place, be glad you have a gig, take the money, and be loud somewhere else where it fits.
Bottom line, there are artists, and there are craftspeople, there is a difference. The trick is knowing when to be which, and taking pride in being good at both.

Man, it breaks my heart to see what this lady did. I don't know if I'm full of shit, but from what I saw, that lady completed affected these guys moods by making them to turn their music and passion down. Up until 5 minutes into the video, I could tell these guys weren't really feeling the groove, because the energy put out into the restaurant made them feel unwelcome, and honestly, hats off to these fellas for STILL playing and STILL trying to groove. Bravo to you fellas for playing so well. I especially love the guy at the end who tipped them. That right there is throwing a rock into a calm lake. That man created ripples of positivity for those guys and likely gave them reason to want to stay and keep pushing through. Keep on playing, guys!
I live in switzerland and I‘m always searching for live music. Nowadays it‘s really hard to listen to live music if it’s not a specific concert or something but in a restaurant or bar live music isn’t really available anymore. It would be the only reason for me to go to a place. We need to support musicians.

See if it were me I’d play by her rules all up until the last song, playing beautiful blues music at her volume the whole time... then for the last song I’d max out the volume and crank out some slayer until she kicked me out lol. That second lady who came up saying a table moved was probably just told to say that by that manager from the beginning. I listened to DOVYDOS many times and exceptional does not even begin to describe his talent. But I can sympathize with the lady, lots of times when I have gone to a restaurant/bar I want EXACTLY what she wants, a nice conversation with friends without having to lean in and shout just to be able to talk to each other. We went to socialize not attend a concert. DAVYDOS needs to start seeking different venues because his mindboggling talent deserves it.

I don't know but when I used to play in a bar or something, when they told us to keep it down it was because they didn't have any government permission to have a band playing, so it was technically illegal. Maybe this is the case.
They want the lure of "live music" to put on the billboard out front, but they don't want the actual music.

I play a lot of piano, and man does it hurt in a different kind of way when someone tells you it’s too loud or to be quiet. Even if they have intention of being rude it’s just like a slap to the face. Music just hits different when you’re the one creating the sound, so I also never really get tired the pieces I play. When I frequently play the same few songs, it gets repetitive and annoying for others, but it never gets old for me. Since those around me aren’t really into playing instruments themselves, I feel like they just wouldn’t understand.

At least for you as a pianist, your tone does not get affected too heavily by lowering the volume (on digital piano at least).
For us electric guitarists, our tone is heavily dependant on the volume, especially with stuff like gain/distortion.

We once went into a crowded bar and the hostess told us they only had one table left. It was up front right next to the band stand. She said that they were having live music in about a half hour and asked if it would be OK if she seated us up there. Well Duh! Turned out it was a 4 piece country blues band with a piano and an old Cuban guitar player that had to sit down while he played. It was awesome. I hope I get that lucky again someday.

That’s a venue I would NEVER play at again.
My friend is a musician and he’s played bars, restaurants, even live concerts with a full band.
He’s really good at what he does, and I’ve been to a boatload of his venues and watched him perform.
He’s never, from what I’ve seen, had anyone ask him to turn down his music.
If anything he’s had people ask for it to be louder, and he’s even had bars ask for encores and such.
Dovy, respect yourself enough to never play there again.

Thats like hiring a photographer to take pictures and making them wait for people with iPhones to take pictures first.
I used to do wedding photography. Stopped because of all the middle aged/older women who actually do this. I've heard everything from "excuse me, you're in my way" to "uggggh the stupid photog keeps getting in the way of my photos". I've had an assistant I was training leave because people were loudly saying how clueless she looked, etc... I don't do weddings anymore lol
And yes, I've missed shots because of it.
