I am Greek. I lived abroad for 20 years, came back. I feel sorry for Niki and her friend. There are two societies in Greece. A small society of the privileged, who have income without dependence to a private employer (e.g., those that have real estate, getting income from rents, those who have "connections" and are employed in predominantly public sector positions where they make money without significant effort and have lots of spare time) - for them life is far, far better than the average European, as you can literally work part time (or not at all), and still enjoy relatively cheap services, amazing weather, etc.. Then there is a much larger society that Niki belongs to which is the one that depends on an employer to make a living. Life for this society is hell, especially now that inflation has made everything much more expensive. This society gets taken advantage of, by the people belonging to the first group: low wages, no prospects of advancement, a lot of working hours. If you are Greek and belong to the second category leave; don't look back. Go abroad, make some money, then consider coming back later in life. If you are Greek and in the first category, then you are lucky, you will hardly find a better place, at least in Europe.
You just described the society in turkey. Some depends on bank interests, collecting rent, some relatives of politicians (thieves!) And most extremely without hope in poverty and no new investments no new businesses no employment prospects...
My family migrated to Greece in 1991 this kind of hardship was always there for us. I grew up in this country, and I can say with confidence that nothing has changed for better. What I see here is corruption, zero compassion for its people and zero organisational skills in management of this beautiful place. Thank you so much for this video. This needs exposure ! Keep it up

One thing that Greece gets wrong is the insistence that everyone gets a university degree, no matter what that degree is in, without any applicability in the local job market, while certain skills are always in short supply and very well paid. Had she pursued a technology degree with programming, as she is doing now on the side, she would have been able to get a higher-paying job or even nowadays a remote job and stay in Greece. A degree ie in Sociology does not mean much in Greece’s employment market. I see a lot of friend having spent years and €€ to study something and then struggle, only to then do something completely different.

Half of the g.d. income of greece (about 100bn) is collected as taxes from the half of the population of greece to be given as a reassured life long steady income to the other half of the population. That has as a result the "little paradice" of the one half to become the real hell of the private economy of the other half. There is no financial air to "breath" a serious private economy. So everything is based on light service jobs that offer cheap service products that have cheap salaries for the people. That is happening in greece for 50 year now. And is going to happen continuously until the end of the days. Whoever does not know that, does not know anything about the greeks and their way of life. Naturaly young "moder people", even the greek speaking ones, have no clue about that situation. Modernity is an enemy of the history (i.e. the knowlegde).

It is more and more common for students to work part time (they don't have to pay taxes), for full time workers to start an individual business on the side (the income from this is practically tax free) or for pensioners to work easy jobs (they get a huge tax cut as well).
Exactly-- the goal of any educated middle class greek is to work in the public sector so they don't actually have to work. Greece was on EU socialism for years--lots of german debt but the financial crisis meant the reality hit and the economy was living way beyond its means with a fat public sector and lots of corruption. The young Greeks suffered the most, but socialism never worked-- EU-led privation finally meant some upgrades to things, e.g. roads / airports and other infrastructure and many things were finally modernized.

Inspectors have dissapeared from the - realy hard - education decates ago. Every "hard way" that could lead somewhere high has replaced with "easy ways" that will lead nowhere of value.
we would get a whole picture if you interviewed her employers, they would explain why she was fired, or what kind of job she did. I worked in Athens, after 7 days I found a job, I could not speak a word of Greek, I worked every day for 10 hours, I had no papers, I never complained.
Mostly in the 50s to 70s nowadays only the ones with degrees fro better pay though the Greek nation gave them free education and medical care. Traitors in my view.
It would be fine to do the study work in the day and have an evening job to supplement income, this is the norm for all students. Also in Greece, there is a complete lack of cleaning staff for Airbnb work or home cleaning, you can easily make 60 euros for an hour and a half to clean a small airbnb room. x 2 daily of those would be 2400 Euros a month. I'm living in Greece for 30 years...
If you have the opportunity to go abroad, it’s worth trying. You experiencing something different, and your view on life broadens. You gain knowledge, wisdom, see different cultures, different people, different way of life, struggle, more opportunities….. If you want to go back to Greece, you will go back as a different person, and you will see things you couldn’t see before.. Maybe you will find a place which suits you better, or maybe not.. Life is an adventure😊❤
Nice life you're having there if you think this kind of a life situation is an adventure. In fact, you will have a culture shock if you go back and you will see even more clearly how doomed your country of origin is. Speaking from experience. Don't ever go back.
Here in Germany in most companies you can choose how many days and hours you want to work (between 3- 5 days) if you have a cheap rent you would survive with 3 weekly work days . Thats how I live. But life here is hard anyway specially the social one.
I have a (greek) friend that migrated from greece to germany and often posts about how the same products are cheaper in germany than in greece. Also says that the governemtnhelps you buy a house and it's not impossible as it is here.
Just leave the country now. If you speak english and habe a basic bachelor degree you can build in 6 months a much better life in countries like germany, netherlands, switzerland etc.

The nice weather isn't so nice. Try working under the scorching sun for 3-5 months (depending on how intense the summer is). Waiting for the bus under the summer heat for more than 30-40 minutes because it has stuck in the traffic. Living in cement cells in concrete jungles like most of the big greek cities without free spaces,parks, enough greenery. Everything is so fast,loud, chaotic and disorganised. Only the food and the generosity of SOME Greeks is what is worth it in Greece apart from the natural beauty which is extraordinary.

It's extremely hard to immigrate to Switzerland, and it is not an EU member state, therefore an EU passport won't help her to relocate there. Why can't Nikki work a part time job, and also continue with her programming course? If you have no profession or marketable skills, you will still not make enough money to survive in a high cost of living country, and you will still be poor. Why does she think money just rolls in the streets of Switzerland? Not to mention that if this lady doesn't have the stamina or resilience to make it through a waitress job, she for sure won't make it as an immigrant which is very hard mentally and emotionally to go through. I should know, I am an immigrant myself.
This seems to be a story about depression, not economics. What young women like her need to develop resilience and coping skills for those horrible periods where we don't like our jobs.
What resillience? Get serious man, In Greece its almost impossible to get a job to cover your costs, and here in Netherlands, my monthly costs with rent is about 1800 euros and the basic salary is 1900 (a salary almost impossible to get). Highly skilled people here like software engineers can secure 4000-5000 euros per month after tax. You have no idea what kind of hellish country Greece is!

I'm Greek, and I left Greece last year. Not only it's impossible to survive, but the salary that most people are getting paid is not enough to cover more than 2 weeks. Itt has nothing to do with gender as well. I am a man with an master's degree. I was getting paid barely the minimum wage. And in fact only 9% of the population receives a salary of more than 1.1k euros.
Enjoy your 6 days a week! I was struggling through my 20s and early thirties financially and I wish we had the motivation to stop this happening to younger generations. Because we suffered through it doesn't mean they have to too.
Kriss just get a scooter and sign up for WOLT. I was saved by that move and I am 55 and live in Athens. Forget about leaving. The most you hear about living abroad is a lie. Rent alone is a nightmare. You have not to pay rent, your GF works, what you need is to be the master of yourself. Just get a used scooter and do delivery.

And as you probably know, platforms like Wolt, Glovo etc. prefer migrant slaves that don't even speak the language of the country they work for, they lower the work price so the pay is minimal. The thing that is not being discussed in this video is that, yeah while all these are true about wages and stuff, there is something that they do not tell. In Greece incompetence, lack of extra or any useful skills , lack of thirst to work extra for capitalism and corpos, and bad employees are not treated the same as in other Western developed countries. There are no assessments in public workers. Everyone is doing their stuff, with bad tempo and care, and go home paid those low wages they mention. The same is starting to become true in many jobs in private sector. So, wrapping all these, here in Greece we are never gonna advance further in tech and attitude, everything will crumble from time to time cursing governments, but never ourselves, but we will remain in a relatively peaceful state of mind that a german, dutch, swiss, french, would never have. We live with our incompetence, we know what is currently happening here, but we do not care, if we grab a cup of coffee and go out in the sun. This is a recipe for failure sometime in the future, but it is what it is.

I know a lot of Greeks who tried to work in the US and went back to Greece. They said work in the US is too much, "way more than we thought it is". My daughter is the college (pre-med) and works 30 hours per week in a restaurant. We don't understand how Greeks have one month vacation plus total holidays around 2-3 weeks.
She worked with a 3 HOUR LUNCH and she couldn't take it. Then find out she's had about 10 different jobs and didn't stick with any of them because they expected her to work. Keep on complaining.
Most Greeks between 20-40 are exactly like this. Nothing but complaining and yet never doing anything to change it. And yet claiming they have all the answers. The older generations are equally blind and arrogant for different reasons. It’s truly a doomed place destined to be nothing more than a vacation destination. I’ll tell you this however, if you want to work in a field which needs actual expertise and not a fake degree you’ll find a decent paying job, yes even in Greece. No “connections” or “privileged” background required.
Agreed. I’m also Greek and went through a rough time laying my future career in place. I had to do waiting in the summer, odd jobs. And when I had to count every euro as they did, I also quit smoking. Money down the pit just to destroy your health.
She worked 8 hours without a break, then went home to take a rest for 3 hours and then she went to work another job for 4-5 hours...which meant she was home well after midnight, probably around 1-2 am and she had to go early in the morning to work. Not having time for sleep is not easy.
Imagine if one of them got pregnant and they got a child to raise -they couldn t afford-. Western societys have moved away from production and capitalism is earning money from economical or marketing ways. Greece is the crossroad of west and east (west civilization is based on Greek). Living abroad as a Romanian , been the best choice of my life . I feel greek young people , in Romania is the same only public sector of working gets benefits , corruption , relations, and ties to any kind of political parties . Romania became a living hell , people keep leaving , and employers ask themselves why they cannot find people for work , meanwhile exploiting employees to the last drop
I feel like this is an insanely generic "documentary". I also live in Greece, in Thessaloniki where she lives and the reality is very different, i work only during the season and usually i travel during the winter. My quality of life is super high even for European standards. Greeks are also as rich as the Germans (a g7 country), typically having big fortunes like homes and shops. They just found 1 "alternative" person and say that this is the entire country lol.
@@s.e.studios1386 for me yes, i would suggest you to stay in Kos, Rhodes or Corfu as these are places that have some of the most beautiful islands around them and if you open a shop there in these cities chances are you will have enough money to feed your grandchildren. It highly depends on what your professional experience is too, usually people there work in tourism industry, ships or agriculture.

The problem with European countries they don't have enough capitalism and franchises and larg chain super stores most businesses are small and family owned everyone in the family works at the store even the dogs and cats. You are not correct at all! I offer a normal job in Athens, 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, public insurance and medical care all included, more than 1000 euros salary after all the above are paid already, and i can’t find a normal secretary. Their main problem is that they are just lazy.

I'm at an age, and i understand what while young people finding it difficult to adapt, the rules of the game aren't helping either.
I'm Greek, and I left Greece last year. Not only it's impossible to survive, but the salary that most people are getting paid is not enough to cover more than 2 weeks. Itt has nothing to do with gender as well. I am a man with an master's degree. I was getting paid barely the minimum wage. And in fact only 9% of the population receives a salary of more than 1.1k euros.

Rent alone is a nightmare. You have not to pay rent, your GF works, what you need is to be the master of yourself. Just get a used scooter and do delivery.

And as you probably know, platforms like Wolt, Glovo etc. prefer migrant slaves that don't even speak the language of the country they work for, they lower the work price so the pay is minimal. It's not like it used to be in the beginning. Second, she's female. Etc. There are many problems with that type of work.

The thing that is not being discussed in this video is that, yeah while all these are true about wages and stuff,
there is something that they do not tell.
In Greece incompetence, lack of extra or any useful skills , lack of thirst to work extra for capitalism and corpos, and bad employees are not treated the same
as in other Western developed countries.
There are no assessments in public workers. Everyone is doing their stuff, with bad tempo and care, and go home paid those low wages they mention.
The same is starting to become true in many jobs in private sector.
So, wrapping all these, here in Greece we are never gonna advance further in tech and attitude, everything will crumble from time to time cursing governments,
but never ourselves, but we will remain in a relatively peaceful state of mind that a german, dutch, swiss, french, would never have.
We live with our incompetence, we know what is currently happening here, but we do not care, if we grab a cup of coffee and go out in the sun.
This is a recipe for failure sometime in the future, but it is what it is.

I know a lot of Greeks who tried to work in the US and went back to Greece. They said work in the US is too much, "way more than we thought it is". My daughter is the college (pre-med) and works 30 hours per week in a restaurant. We don't understand how Greeks have one month vacation plus total holidays around 2-3 weeks.
You get a minimum of 20 days annual leave in Greece + Government Holidays.

She worked with a 3 HOUR LUNCH and she couldn't take it. Then find out she's had about 10 different jobs and didn't stick with any of them because they expected her to work. Keep on complaining.
Most Greeks between 20-40 are exactly like this. Nothing but complaining and yet never doing anything to change it. And yet claiming they have all the answers. The older generations are equally blind and arrogant for different reasons. It’s truly a doomed place destined to be nothing more than a vacation destination. I’ll tell you this however, if you want to work in a field which needs actual expertise and not a fake degree you’ll find a decent paying job, yes even in Greece. No “connections” or “privileged” background required.
Agreed. I’m also Greek and went through a rough time laying my future career in place. I had to do waiting in the summer, odd jobs. And when I had to count every euro as they did, I also quit smoking. Money down the pit just to destroy your health.
Had you really listened, she worked eight hours with then a tree hour break, only to work in another job for four to five hours until night.
And a 3 hour break may be necessary in the. Greek summer heat.
She worked 8 hours without a break, then went home to take a rest for 3 hours and then she went to work another job for 4-5 hours...which meant she was home well after midnight, probably around 1-2 am and she had to go early in the morning to work. Not having time for sleep is not easy.

Western societys have moved away from production and capitalism is earning money from economical or marketing ways. Greece is the crossroad of west and east (west civilization is based on Greek). I feel greek young people , in Romania is the same only public sector of working gets benefits , corruption , relations, and ties to any kind of political parties . Romania became a living hell , people keep leaving , and employers ask themselves why they cannot find people for work , meanwhile exploiting employees to the last drop

I feel like this is an insanely generic "documentary". I also live in Greece, in Thessaloniki where she lives and the reality is very different, i work only during the season and usually i travel during the winter. My quality of life is super high even for European standards. Greeks are also as rich as the Germans (a g7 country), typically having big fortunes like homes and shops. They just found 1 "alternative" person and say that this is the entire country lol.
@@s.e.studios1386 for me yes, i would suggest you to stay in Kos, Rhodes or Corfu as these are places that have some of the most beautiful islands around them and if you open a shop there in these cities chances are you will have enough money to feed your grandchildren. It highly depends on what your professional experience is too, usually people there work in tourism industry, ships or agriculture.

@@s.e.studios1386If you have remote work and a better salary than most greeks then you can move anywhere. But if you are gonna work a basic greek job with 700-800 euros a month with the rents being 500 euros then it's not worth it.

Greeks and Germans have the same fortune, also Greeks as a whole have an even bigger, considering that Greeks in Greece are some of the poorer ones compared to the ones in diaspora. Germans with 2/3 more wealth (as a county entity) have same fortune as Greeks.
Everyone wants a job that pays well. Wait in line like everyone else. It sucks but it’s the reality of things. Where are you going to go that’s better? If there is a place like that then everyone would be lining up to get in.
The problem with European countries they don't have enough capitalism and franchises and larg chain super stores most businesses are small and family owned everyone in the family works at the store even the dogs and cats. Some tech jobs expect to much experience unlike in USA you don't need experience really most companies train you

You are not correct at all! I offer a normal job in Athens, 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, public insurance and medical care all included, more than 1000 euros salary after all the above are paid already, and i can’t find a normal secretary. Their main problem is that they are just lazy.
In Athens 1000 the month is not enough when you pay 500 for rent minimum 😂

Salary should never depend on whether you live with parents or you have other means to support your financial position. This is a huge mistake.

@@lorrainevlambert Not most, but many people do, I agree. When you accept a job offer though, they never ask you whether you live in a share house or what your expenses are. The salary depends on a benchmarking not on what your monthly expenses are .
