I feel like the jolly balloon man could be a great goblin commander: a lot of goblins have etbs that make tokens and want to go wide, white lets you play a lot more protection, interaction, and token doublers. It would be less reliant on going all-in like most other mono-R commanders and more reliable

The cards im looking for forward most from the set are actually some ~1 dollar uncommons. Ultimely malfunction is the best costed redirect spell so far (there's some than can be cheaper but with a hoop to jump through) and it has relevant secondary effects. And withering torment I think replaces Feed the Swarm in every deck that ran it.
Funny enough, solemn simulacrum is one of the best value targets for balloon man since you get both the ramp and the draw.
Same with Niko.
Within the set, when Niko flickers a face-down creature it returns face-up. So combined with manifest dread he can save mana in the process of filling your board.
I'm very much looking forward to playing with Cursed Recording alongside Displacer Kitten. Why only copy 1 spell per turn when you can copy all of them.
I’m surprised that rooms aren’t artifact enchantments. The logic being that it’s an enchanted human-made space. Its also worth pointing out that there are artifact cards representing very large monuments that believers can visit as well as there being vehicle artifacts which have a room/cockpit usually where the pilots sit inside of them.
I think the reason is that at this point the rooms are not really human or artifice. they are really just part of the demons will made manifest using the house as a template
Hedge Shredder is probably the card I'm most excited for. 😂

There are few and highly desirable tiggered abilities of spell which will become permanents. So like The Ceaseless Hunger doesn't get to exile 4 targets when its cast.

There are a grand total of two cards that make Shards and only one is standard legal. Part of me wonders if Wizards is just just afraid of there being yet another artifact token that winds up being played in everything, when limiting it to blue/white is a perfect fix from a design standpoint, plus this is the first time we’ve seen Niko since Kaldheim. Holy fuck it’s been that long since we learned apparently Phyrexians just had the ability to jump around and make a new body, such simpler times indeed

@@PleasantKenobi yes. It is a mill card, but can be manipulated in several ways. Dress down, fling, and maybe even trickbind. I will have to get rulings on the trickbind.
@TheDirtyPineapple Trickbind will not work, because the damage prevention/mill is not a trigger its a replacement effect. The others will work tho

Kona is way overrated imo, its four mana so cheating something with it isn't much easier to cheat with other stuff, it requires more setup and is way more interactible. The clone card is do nuts in my cayth though

Turn 1 Jeweled Lotus into Kona is going to win a lot of casual games. Farting out a Blightsteel or some other fatty on turn 2 for just having some fast mana is so silly.
What casual decks include *both* Jeweled Lotus and Blightsteel? Lol. That's not casual.

I’m really not excited for Duskmourn in all seriousness. Aside from the aesthetic not being my cup of tea, several of these cards just seem way too problematic for no reason.
Problematic? If nothing was problematic magic wouldn’t be any fun. Of course some of these cards need to be powerful otherwise the game would be stale
@@ethanmitchelson I feel like you’re missing the entire point of problematic. Problematic doesn’t mean strong, it means cards that aren’t healthy or frustrating to play against due to what they cause or do.

@5:21 You can tell WotC doesnt care about who they are marketing to. We are talking about a Standard set and surely WotC means for 13+ to play this right lol…. That the art direction and implications of BLB to DSK (in the same Standard no less) is some hard whiplash (cute wholesome fluffy to highly fucked up and horrific).
At least Pocket Monsters isnt trying this hard to gross out and scare their player base.
Both games are about gambling and teaching an addiction but one is clearly meant for adults. WotC should just admit this fact.
They have variety of settings that can appeal to different groups. Why alienate anyone by trying to pigeonhole it to a specific group. I started playing Magic at 9 years old and it was the crazy art on stuff like monoblack and orzhov that got me interested. Kids like different stuff, kids also don't super care about cards worth a lot I just liked how they look so it was never gambling for me, it's basically the same for kids with pokemon. I didn't know a single kid that actually knew how to play pokemon and yugioh in the early 2000s, we just wanted pretty cardboard.

You had a very different experience with Magic then. My play group joking recognised it as playing the lottery. Especially when you get 1 card you want from a booster pack and then need copies 2, 3 and ideally 4.

I started playing Magic before TCG player existed. Yes today TCG player / ABU Games / Card Kingdom / etc all help remove the odds. However secondary Magic cards are pricey.
Tell a child to afford a 400usd to 500usd Standard deck. Only rich kids are buying the singles that they want and need.
And most of those cards will go to zero once they rotate.
@dragade101 or you get a kid and their siblings some precons and they enjoy themselves. A hobby doesn't need to get to a competitive level. You're phrasing magic like you're desperately trying to pull cards in a lottery to play at a competitive level when if it really is a kid playing it's probably them just playing cards they think look cool against their friends and family

Question: i am looking at putting mirror room in my Ovika enigma Goliath deck.
When I cast it, I get ovikas trigger for the amount I pay? Or the total amount?
When I cast free spells, I get the trigger maxed in the mana value on the card
Valgavoth Terror Eater is 1000% getting a spot in my legacy reanimator. This thing could be dirty in mirror. If you drop him T1 then your fellow reanimator opponent can only fetch 1 time, and can't cast anything besides STP.
So very, very many Green or something-Green decks Kona is going in.
A secondary means of tapping, you say? Not thinking Green enough. Counters on Kona, and attack, attack, attack.
Selesnya, still attacking, different ways to keep alive.
Simic? Third verse, same as the first.
Are the other options more *efficient* ? Of course.
Let’s just not forget that sending Kona to smash face and live to tell the tale is hardly Mission Impossible in Green.
Slapping that Tap For Mana Aura that has to target a Legendary on Kona w/ Seedborn Muse seems like a nice way to make the new Tyvar go, as well.
Love Axion Now, the owners are so nice, and I've known them since before Axion Now existed.
I mean the difference between 4 and 7 or 8 is pretty huge but also you can see it as doubling your mana because you can now spend that mana on other things. for example cheat in galta and cast garruk draw 12 for 5 mana

Great picks, PK! Really informative and cool combos. I've been wanting to cook with Kona in commander since I saw it. Duskmourn seems great so far and I'm excited to see how it changes standard.
If you can make a non-legendary (or get around the legend rule) copy or Marvin, one could always attach psychic paper to it and give it another name plus all the other stuff that card gives creatures.
While there is a lot about Duskmourn that I really do love, I find myself really annoyed with Kona because it's so *easy* to break rather than it being a card that you need to think about how to get the most out of.
