"Hey, Joe": 1972 is two generations ago--nearly fifty years ago. You need an update: Oakland has been undergoing a sustained twin revival and gentrification over the past ten years (at least), and now tops the NYTimes, National Geographic, and other publications' prestigious annual lists of "must-visit" cities: in the spring/summer months, large numbers of families of all backgrounds now picnic along Lake Merritt's shores well after sundown, and what was a grungy, dead shoreline in 1972 now boasts rakish eateries, bistros, cafés and the like (Oakland is now a well-known and innovative culinary city, complete with star chefs and Michelin-annointed restaurants)

I truly miss living in Lake Merritt. My absolute favorite place in the Bay Area.
Spent a lot of time here-I miss it
Beautiful park and neighborhood in a city that features an actually quite handsome --and revitalizing--downtown and beautiful hillside neighborhoods.
Home sweet home :)
Great video! I learned a few new things about Oakland.
Thanks Christiane! That was the idea, I learned new things making the video.
Love this! Great area, looking forward to visiting ASAP.
Thanks Sam
Wow, this changes my whole concept of Oakland! Nice video tour!
Thanks Mary
Writing a story that is partly based in Oakland. This was SO HELPFUL in my research. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful
Great stuff, Philip. A few happenings I wasn't aware of that look to be "must-dos"!
The vendors around the lake around been so noisy that the Catholic Church has had to stop their evening Saturday service. Those people are Not from around the lake.
It’s not like this. There’s been a couple of killings around the lake
There is no uptown in oakland...im am born and raised in oakland it is downtown oakland. That uptown thing is for the gentrification era.
Stayed (lived?) there in 1972. Beautiful but beware when the sun goes down.

Oakland has come a long, long way since 1972.

I have fond memories of the Bay Area1972, tho it was short lived. Thanks for allowing me your offer of showing your city off. ~ USN Vet.
