  • Welcome to Oakland! We are exploring this East Bay region, which is filled with culture and contrasts. From the urban center to the natural scenery, to historic buildings and new stores - we cover some unexpected finds in Oakland.
We start at Lake Merrit, a tidal lagoon in the heart of Oakland. It is 3.4 miles in circumference, making it a popular running and walking destination. We dine at Oakland's premiere seafood restaurant, Lake Chalet which is right on the sparkling water. We take an unexpected tour of Oakland on a real Venetian gondola with Dolce Vita Gondolas - a relaxing way to take in nature among the urban landscape.
Next, we head to the Oakland Museum of California, just in time for First Fridays - an event that has live music and a block full of food trucks ranging from Jamaican to Indian cuisine. This is a casual and family-friendly event right in the center of the city.
The next day, we tour Jack London Square - the jumping-off point for the San Francisco Ferry. During our visit, Fleet Week was in full effect and we got to watch the Blue Angels soar over the Bay Area. Near Jack London Square is the Brooklyn Basin, a former bustling shipping yard that has since been reimagined into a waterfront recreational space. We rent kayaks and view the city of San Francisco from the water.
Oakland is home to two historic neighborhoods, Piedmont and Temescal which have excellent and diverse dining options. Lastly, we drive up Skyline Drive to the Reinhardt Redwood Recreational Park where we hike through a redwood grove only ten minutes from the city center.
We stay in Uptown Oakland at the Kissel, a Beau Arts building that has turned into a beautiful boutique hotel within walking distance from many of Oakland's top eateries and sights.

It's pronounced Tim-es-cal Lake Temescal. Wonderful trip. I came to Oakland when I was 22 and am now 69. Thanks for pointing out my favorite things about this great sister city to San Francisco.

@@RunTheAtlas Not for the better. Oakland is on the decline. I am praying for revitalization.

Liked the video. Temescal is pronounced a little differently. Accent on the first syllable, not second, and it sounds more like something halfway between tem-ah-scal and tem-ah-scow. Close enough. Berkeley is named after a mathematician who pronounced it Barclay, so what can you do.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but from what I heard almost a million dead bodies had been retrieved from this lake over the many decades..😳
