  • Have you ever got so angry for no reason? or had a horrible slip of the tongue? Have you ever had a random thought that is so evil, so dark, and so not you?
Carl Jung, the father of analytical psychology, has an answer. He called it “The Shadow”. And it’s more than just an evil side of you.
Dive in, and lemme know what you think!

Well, the theory of the shadow is surprisingly eye opening for me. I suppose putting my shadow into a more physical appearance for the sake of understanding, it would have many hands. All human beings naturally want to have those they care about close and protected, but having them ripped away could cause over possessiveness of ones that come later. Since this trait is looked down upon in society and also known in a more nonviolent light as clinginess, I have found I mask it by being rather cold and blunt. Please excuse this long paragraph of a comment, I had many thoughts and realizations that I needed to configure. I think I’ll try my best to work on myself, best wishes to those in a similar position

This video is so timely. I've been making a lot of mistakes at work recently and I already don't know why they are so often. Probably because I get stuck thinking of the older problems and they just pile up. 😮 I kinda feel lost but I know the shadow is here. Now, I just have to try and accept this part me. It's harder than it looks NGL

Been trying to deal with “dark” thoughts so this video was entertaining and thought provoking. Is the idea to give into our dark thoughts or entertain our shadow from time to time? That sounds like it could be destructive.

You need to create a safe space where the shadow can be expressed without giving into those negative thoughts or destructive behaviors. The point is to bring awareness and slowly bring the shadow into the light. I'm still learning how to do this. But the point isn't to put yourself or others in danger or to act out those negative thoughts or behaviours. It can be destructive if you relinquish control completely. That's why awareness is so important. There will always be darkness within us. We either let it run our lives or we invite it into the light to be a part of our conscious experiences. If youre still unsure, then try to find a professional who understands shadow work who can help with this process or help allay your fears.

My shadow comes out in my art and morbid humor. It's not bad to know the dark, or even necessarily to be the dark. Just as long as your darkness is a world of mystery, discovery, self-expression, etc and not destruction of the self or others outright. I'm not gonna pretend I'm a bubbly vivacious person gleefully bouncing through life in sunshine, but I'm also not gonna be a brooding edgelord that lives in permanent eclipse either. If anything, we should all show each other our shadows, within reason. It will bring us together so we can truly all enjoy the proverbial Light so much more.

i am surprised by how unaware people are about this. Diarying? meditation? eye opening? i wouldnt think you need to do any of those things to reconcile with your shadow, just think like a human being and you will right? this is not some hard conclusion to reach or something like, just think. Like, isnt that what everyone does? thinking about where your thoughts and emotions come from, and why did you just say this word instead of this synonymous, etc things like that. Why would you not think about those things, the causes of who you are? I find this strange because it seems like people are usually bulied by their shadow but mine is my companion and behaves well, i dont know i guess im surprised that the rest of people havent automatically reconciled with their shadow by the time they are 22-23-24 years old, like, i dont see it as hard or unlikely, its the inevitable path if you just... think, like, think. Not even meditating or whatever. Just think.

I think I might offer you some insight of it by showing myself as a possible, but somewhat extreme, example from what I think I can tell.
For the most part of my 19 years I remained oblivious of everything and anything deeper of myself. That's due to mindless screentime consumption. I need to put in conscious effort to experience thoughts. I also repressed all of my emotions. So what was there to really reflect on? Everyday felt just the same but that didn't bother me cuz I believed that's normal. Of course you can reflect on your past but nah rather put it under the rug. Can't effect you if you think it never happened as you more of less don't remember it in the first place, right? By a bit more than a year ago, I think I really started to actually do some "real" digging: why can't I feel? What happened? What's the mechanism? What do I believe deep down? What's my biased? Are there nuances, and if yes where do they disagree?
I met many people in therapy and from what I can tell. People try to work on it in the late 10s or 20s other later like 30s or 40s maybe later too.
