- The M60 MBT was in service for many decades. It was first employed in the late 1950s, when the US was in dire need of a tank that could fight the newest generation of Soviet armour. Now, more than half of a century later, we can clearly see that American engineers created a combat vehicle with almost infinite potential for modernization. This video is all about the venerable M60 and its progeny: from the earliest models to the most modern ones. Let’s go!

I trained on the M60A1 with the First Cav in 1970. Went to Nam and was given a M551 Sheridan. Needless to say the M551 was not accepted well and was basically junk. In any case, I still have the complete training and operations manual for the M60A1. We felt safe in the M60, not so much in the M551 that had armor so weak a .50 cal could penetrate it.
I may not be the oldest player in War Thunder, but at 73 and a former tanker, I love the machines and the game.

We trained with the Shillelagh but it was never used in Nam. The jungle made it impossible to track a target using wire guiding. Too many trees.
My favorite round was the M625 cannister. It had thousands of flechettes and would devastate any thing around and level the jungle.
The problem was the 'caseless' ammo. The warhead would seperate from the powder and wouldn't load into the breach. Then we had power all over the floor of the tank and that's never good. One spark or RPG would set it off.
It was easy to maintain and we liked that.
Nothing hotter than a tank or apc in the jungle heat.

Nope. There is 4 Sherman Repotenciados (Argentine upgrade to 105 mm and diesel engine) in service in Paraguay, donated in the 1990s from our scrapyards and kept in service as Tank School vehicles.

Ah yes designed so that the armour was impervious to the Russian 100 when in WT it can get smoked by the German long 75.
Why does the M60A1 in the vehicle have smoke grenades when the one in game doesn’t? Also give the M60A1 APFSDS, it’s been proven that the M60A1 had that shell yet we still have to use APDS at a BR where almost every MBT has APFSDS
I'm sorry it was not. It's a M60A1 AOS. RISE M60's sure were equipped with APFSDS. If you have any source confirmind the use of at least M735 then please show it to me. M60's in game have much bigger issues than AOS firing APDS. M728 is actually very good in my opinion. I was using it as my main ammo type, switching to HEAT only when encountering something like a Maus. It's not a problem. Whole gunshield meme and turret ring armor is.
The m60 with the smoke grenades in the video is the m60 ariete, an italian premium vehicle that was removed
I think they should put those M60 to BR. 9.3 for more realism. The M60 would have been a tasty snack for the T64 😄
@@peterfruchtig5334 Ok sure, then for realism sake let's make basic T-62 10.0. Tanks like T-64 still made a fraction of Soviet forces. Also don't forget the good old PT-76. Russians (not even Soviets anymore) last used it in the Chechen wars, think about it.

When I first took out my m60 when the new sounds were released I nearly crapped my pants for how amazing it sounded!

Ngl, im very curious what it would be like ingame to drive that M60 hull with M1A1 Abrams turret and gun.
Also; the AX (Magach 7C), the Pheonix, SLEP, and Leonardo. There's plenty more M60s they could add.

Useless against SABOT/HEATFS
I first used the M60 back when it was a top tank for american tech tree.
Since then this once brilliant tank has been powercrept into oblivion and received unhistorical nerfs to the turret front.
Let me remind you that game still hasn't done justice to M60A series turret armor, insisting on HOLLOW mantlet!
If this is fixed I just might take them for another spin. For now, avoid it.
I love how these old MBTs really reflected the popular vehicle designs of their country and decade. You can see the auto manufacturer's influence in them, like how the M60's give off a 60's American muscle car aesthetic, the Leopard 1 is slick and fast like a German sports car, the T-55 and later models look like rugged and simple Soviet cars and trucks. It really was a great era for all aspects of the automotive industry, both civilian and military. And just like how in many ways those old cars and trucks still drive and even do hard work today, so do many vintage MBTs with a few modernizations.
3:30 a hint that the OG m60A1 RISE could be arriving in the near future, maybe a premium similar to the Amx-30 orginal
I can already hear the community crying since they all seem to hate the M60 family. I’d love to see it myself since I really like using them. I wonder what BR that would be? 8.3?
Amx-30 1972 isn't premium and isn't the first version of the amx 30 either ?

I drove, loaded, and yes my job was a gunner on this tank. Back in 1984.
I'll tell ya what. Being up on top of tank driving around others....the feeling of power was undeniable.
Its one hell of a kick to shoot one.

I have all of those tanks, they're all weak compared the their competitors
Very weak. The armor is worthless, the speed is low, and the reload is below average
I was a 19 Echo Gunner on an M-60 RISE! We were cocky because most Tankers STUNK at Gunnery. I shot High Tank in AIT on Fort Knox in 1977. Being an Arkansas Hick, I understood Bore Sighting as well as some of the Sargents. Being a Bass Player I know when your string is Sharp, you loosen them first then tighten. On the 105mm M-68, you make a "G" pattern and check the Bore Scope as needed and adjust the sight knobs for the Crosshair and Range Finder as needed. Then the M-60 TTS hit the streets, Laser Range finder, Tank Thermal Sights and Digital + Analog computer and all of a sudden being a almost nothing special. Now the Tanker Gunner for Dummies TTS version was on the Tank Range, we had to change the Quals on the Range.
Thank you, I love them. They were the first tanks I started. I enjoyed all 20 some years. All my units were great.
No variant is fun to play with since it get’s 1 shotted every time and also because the MASSIVE gun mantlet is STILL ONLY 127mm thick!!!!!!!

Im a proud owner of all m60s including the ambt. I love all of them dearly and they are my go to tanks.

@@peterfruchtig5334 im the same lmao they are pretty good. the misconception is that american tanks are good at one thing or good at everything but the reality is that american tanks are jack of all trades. enough speed to get to the combat zone fast, enough armor to tank 1-2 shots, and good firepower to hit back harder.
I only know of one Army M60A3TTS that had the ERA armor. It was AEB103 at the Armor/Engineer Board at Ft. Knox. It's nickname was the Armadillo. I was lucky enough to be on that tank back in the 80's. The ERA was a pain when it came to doing some things such as refueling, had to get the turret just right to open the fuel ports.
I love the starship for its turret armour. The gun and commander is usually the only thing they can pen hull down
Not to interrupt here but apparently there's a variant of the m48 called "M48A5", which already used the M68 105 mm gun way before the m60 came into service, so yeah, its not new
I've been playing since 2013 and I have only unlocked the first M60 lol I mean I spread my time around but this video has inspired me to go and play it.

My favorite M60 to play with is the US M60A3 TTS (with the CARC camo). I think it's a great late cold war vehicle and I love to pair it up with my Abrams for a great duo.
Interesting presentation, but you've focused on the MBT M60s. I served 5.5 yrs. as a 12F Combat Engineer Vehicle Crewmen 10, 20, & 30 operating/commanding an M60 CEV & AVLB. Would have liked seeing them included.

I was on the M60A1 Rise Battle Tank while I was in the service. It was a Beast
I first saw the M60 tank back in Fort Knox Ky back in 1976. I wasn’t a Tanker at the time 11K, I was a 11D and the Army changed the MOS back in I think 1978 to 19D. I loved the M60 but had a little fear of close spaces. At one time I was going to reenlist to 19K for a $5,000 bonus but instead I enlisted for OH-58 aircraft mechanic MOS 67V good move on my part 😂. Still today at age 58 I still love two US Army tanks the M60’s and M1A1.
I really like the M60 AMBT, but the M-60-2000 would be a great addition to Warthunder.
We had the SABOT Round. A Armor Defeating Round. The Heat Round, Beehive and Beehive Times Round The HEP Round for Bunkers and WP Very Nasty Round. The 7.62 Machine Gun and the 50 Cal
So basically I just drove around a corner and then got shot by a M60.

M60 Patton will later be decommissioned in the US army and will be put into service in the US national guard until today the M60 Patton is still in service with the national guard

My favorite M60 is the AMBT because the turret isn't modeled correctly on the ring so the turret ring is exposed to auto cannon fire.

M60A1 & A2 are pretty fun ngl. I have thw premium one in Italy. It's amazing when you don't face British tanks in 7.7
The M60 is amazing! There's plenty of M60s that can be added into the game too, like the M728, the SLEP, Super, M60-2000, Sabra and advanced Magachs.
And they all will get eaten alive by the "real" MBTs, LOL.

@@conordwyer1553 M4 Sherman could be considered to be on par with T-34s in late 1942 - 1943, considering better crew "working conditions" (more roomy, better vision outside, 3-man turret etc.) to be enough to balance its comparative disatvantages like much worse terrain-crossing performance and much bigger size (eazier to see and hit) caused by far from ideal engine prone to over-reving etc.
The thing is, that in this time period, KV-1 was at the peak of its capabilities with much better turret and gun, additional armor, improved reliability atc. when compared to earlier production. Then the T-34-85 came into service, then T-44...
Daddo the Sherman was the best for America and the t-34 was the best for the Ussr there was no best tank they both catered to their countries needs
When I make my 8.0 lineup I plan to have the Starship in my lineup because it looks cool

I play Germany as my main nation. I was using the KT 105 when i first saw an M60. I panicked and fired, but he ignored me and shot my teammate in a Leopard. Managed to get him in the side of the turret afterwards
I actually served in the M 60 A-1 rise passive tank in the Marines
Why is the M60A1 at such a high battle rating when it was released before the Leopard, Chieftain, OF-40 and T-64?

i love war thunder but you never made a video about my favorite plane, the p40, i love this plane when i was a kid the warhawk is the best of all planes, i really like the warhawk i ask for everything to make a video talking of all your qualities best weapons or a family of the p40 i know it is too much to ask but it was something i liked very much that you talk about in this legend with wings😁😁😁

I was used to battle m48s m47s ...but when i first shot m60 .... i shot it with 100m apds 3bm8 to the lower glacis and the shot ricochet . but i was able to bring that beast down later because he also bouced on my T-54 stalinium armor ...
This is my fav tank ever for the rest of my life but please nuff the armor

As russian player I getting onto pattons and m60s at 7.7 BR, they have enough armor to withstand some soviet devastating aphe, also their heat is quite good in destroying tanks which lean on their armor, such as is4m or even t10m
