    No Frunk isn’t a dealbreaker. Been driving a Leaf for years without one, but it sure is nice to have a Frunk. It’s a nice place to keep your charging cable.

      A small frunklet for the L2 charging cable would make sense given that the Leaf has the charge port up front. What I love about my Leaf 40kWh is the charge port and old style door handles.

    We got our Mach-E at the end of November (2021). We love "having" a frunk, but to be honest we've never used it. Probably when spring arrives and we start taking more road trips, etc. But so far everything fits just fine in the back hatch. I'd agree with most here...smart feature, but not a necessity.

    The frunk is definitely not a deal breaker. I think people shouldn't be giving a car a -1 point or more because a EV doesn't have a frunk. I personally think it is better to have a bigger cargo room than a frunk as you can make better use with the cargo space. If an EV is designed for looks and have a longer hood where a useable frunk (at least a typical luggage bag and some bits can fit) they sure they can add it but if it is something like we see with the Ioniq 5, I think they rather just increase the cargo space.

    My ID4 just arrived a few days ago, and I love it as an everyday driver. I do not think the frunk is a huge issue. The only thing I will keep in mine would be some emergency supplies like food, water, and tools. The id4 has a space for it at the back. It is not the best place if you have a bunch of stuff in the trunk, but it is not like I am in an emergency everyday.

    We don’t often use the frunk on either of our Model 3s. It’s good for picking up food that would make the cabin smell if we otherwise put it in the cabin or trunk. Also good for keeping the charge cable/ adapters in there. I wish my Model 3 was a hatchback.

    I agree with you Alex, if the design language of the vehicle makes for a long hood then the vehicle maker should create a frunk, but they should not create a long hood just to create a funk. In the Taycan I have a frunk and use it about 1/4 of the time I use the trunk. But the long hood was required for that vehicle to fit the Porsche design language.
    I also buy the feeling that a pickup truck may be one example where a funk is actually nearly required for easily lockable space.

    I agree with your view, Alex. Looking at a vehicle holistically, consolidating cargo room in the trunk and minimizing front hood length should maximize cargo room per vehicle size. If you don't compare cargo room based on their vehicle size, then the comparison is moot because you can always just go for a bigger vehicle for more space.

    I think frunk utilization for many EV owners is low partly because most aren’t power operated like the hatch/trunk. Some require going inside the car to pull a lever or require a special way to close them. I personally like the idea of a frunk and look forward to a review of the Rivian, the first EV with a truly useable frunk and power operation.

    I think that it's good to have both available because people have different needs. To take an example from a related design area, I prefer sedans to crossovers because I like more separation between my cargo and occupant areas (though rear folding seats can be handy when you need the length) than you get with a crossover, but that doesn't mean that I think that crossovers don't work for other people, or even me in some cases - I'm driving an electric hatchback right now because the EV sedan landscape just didn't have an offering that could match other qualities I was looking for when I bought it several years ago. I'm hoping that by the time I'm in the market for a replacement that will have changed.

    To be fair Gas ICE sports/super cars have had Frunks ever since someone dicided to put an engine in the back of a automoblie... Very few mid/rear engine Gas ICE cars ever not had a frunk and always they feel out of place becuase of it... So the qustion of why an BEV needs a frunk is simple luxury like having two side mirrors, leather seats and not cheap plastic. It does beg the question why does a Pursche 911 need a frunk/long hood though?

    There are more problems to the ID.4 than not having a frunk. It has the least intuitive interior of any volume-selling production car. Sadly this is where VW is headed.

    • @nothere572
      @nothere572 2 года назад

      This is extremely overblown. Are there better interiors in competition? Yes, but this doesn’t make the ID.4 interior “the least intuitive in any car” You get used to it and from most owners I hear it’s perfectly fine. It’s the reviewers making all the ruckus.

    • @garrettw99

      @@nothere572 at first glance it looks fine. However, they didn’t install backlighting to most of the dashboard touch buttons. So in the dark you can’t even see the volume buttons or temperature controls. Then you have to press the rear window (touch) button to put down the rear windows. It is also the most menu-packed infotainment system. Most commands require you to go more than 2 menus to do anything. And the “EV”-related features in the infotainment are garbage. It doesn’t even know how to efficiently route your trip with charging stations. Tesla and even Ford do it much better.

    The Munro teardown of the ID4 takes the wind out of the sail of Alex's argument.
    They roasted how lazily the ID4 was thrown together and how much space there was behind the IP to make it worm

    • @EVBuyersGuide
      @EVBuyersGuide  2 года назад +8

      Munro is frankly wrong here, there is really no way that you could put a bag the size you can in a Tesla for a Ford in the ID for even with rearranging the components. It is true that Volkswagen focused less on component miniaturization, however that was to ensure commonality of components with other vehicles in other markets which benefits everybody. The fact of the matter is, if the Volkswagen was as long as the Ford or the Tesla, there would be enough room for a front trunk but in this shape there is not

    • @aex90832
      @aex90832 2 года назад +1

      @@EVBuyersGuide I'm not saying it would get similar storage with optimization of space, just that I don't buy that there isn't enough room to have a frunk in the ID4. Just because it won't be as big doesn't mean you cant at least try to make something usable.
      Though I don't always agree with Munro (who can at times come across as a Tesla apologist), as an engineer, it is frustrating when "commonality" is used as an excuse. Sure, individual parts may be common, however, you are still building a different car, which includes its own engineering to make those of the shelf parts fit. If you're going to spend the money anyways, why not take the time to space optimize to provide a feature that many EV buyers are looking for. Even Volvo managed a small frunk when converting an ICE platform to EV with the XC40, where there are many more restrictions on "commonality".
      Think about how many parts under the hood are shared between the Mach-E and other "run of the mill" Ford products. Ford simply took advantage of the additional space afforded by the design IN ADDITION TO making space/packaging optimization.

    • @EVBuyersGuide
      @EVBuyersGuide  2 года назад

      As an engineer, I will present the main argument to you, from the firewall to the front of the vehicle, the Ford and the Tesla are considerably longer. The difference between the Ford and the Volkswagen is approximately 10 inches, so literally if you stretched the front end of the idea that far, you could easily accommodate a similar sized front trunk

    • @aex90832
      @aex90832 2 года назад +1

      @@EVBuyersGuide
      The argument I'm trying to make is not about cargo space comparisons between these two vehicles. What I'm arguing is that VW was lazy in their "new platform" and easily could've optimized to allow for a frunk, even if it isn't big enough for a suitcase. However, they chose not to, and thus created a car that isn't competitive (look at Q4 2021 sales as a reference)
      Their total lengths are approximately 5 inches apart. With the longer wheelbase of the Ford, you get the larger interior cabin: approximately 3 inches more combined leg room. I believe cargo space behind 2nd row is similar. So yes, some of the additional length is directly linked to a larger frunk. It is just mathematically convenient that the length of the frunk aligned with the difference in total length, when in fact the optimizations Ford made allowed for a larger frunk than they would've otherwise had, as well as a more accommodating interior space.
      Still love your videos, and 99.99% of the time I agree with you (and your reviews let to me getting my wife a 2021 Pacifica Hybrid). I just feel, personally, that the defense of the ID4's lack of a frunk is unjustified.

    • @EVBuyersGuide
      @EVBuyersGuide  2 года назад +2

      But if you are designing a brand-new platform, why design it to be packaged inefficiently? Space on the inside/cargo area versus space on the outside is actually optimized by not having a front trunk

    • @khaneric
      @khaneric 2 года назад

      @@EVBuyersGuide I agree, it shouldn't be designed to be packaged inefficiently but I feel that's what happens most of the time.
      Look at the EV6/Ionic, there is plenty of room in those cars and yet the small storage area under the hood was just added on, but I do think it's a good design for at least charging cables or emergency supplies. Something up there is better then nothing, and i think with a little bit of tweaking the ID4 could have that as well.
      I'm willing to guess the next mid cycle release or next gen version of the ID4 and the EV6/Ionic will have a much bigger frunk area.

    • @EVBuyersGuide
      @EVBuyersGuide  2 года назад +2

      The real difference is the length of the distance between the firewall and the front of the vehicle, you cannot pack it in completely because there has to be room for crumple zones. The Ford and Tesla electric cars have exceptionally long hoods for an electric vehicle which is where the room comes from primarily. In an odd way, the design of those vehicles is closer to a traditional gasoline vehicle and gasoline vehicle platform constraints. The hood on the Ford and Tesla is longer than the hood on a BMW rear wheel drive car with an in-line six, or a full-size SUV with a 6.4 L V8

    Car makers should give us useful features and balance it with overall vehicle class size and options. If VW hears enough people say “no frunk, therefore I’m not buying this…” then we’ll probably see a frunk at some point. I do think that storage and usability is a great differentiator for shoppers. Look at new Ioniq5/Kia6. They have a frunk,but it s so small the usability is questionable. I carry lots of stuff in my car, so if there is a cubby or frunk I would use it, however, I would not necessarily exclude an EV that didn’t have one.
