Fey Wanderer has been pretty fun for me in play. I often play wisdom based martials. I love roleplaying yet typically dump my charisma, this subclass allowed me to be the face while still being a ranger. Plus I was an archer so not as MAD as you seem to think. Also being able to fight from a distance I got maximum usage of dreadful strikes. Also beguiling twist works when you, an ally or an enemy triggers a frightened or charmed effect so in battles against multiple enemies I shined the most. Especially when you have a wizard that prefers the Fear spell over fire ball.
Fey Wanderer is one of the few ways a Ranger can get access to Dispel Magic. Otherworldly Glamour can boost Dispel Magic's & through the same vein, Counterspell's, check if CHA is the Spellcasting Ability, through mutliclassing. Gaining a bonus from WIS & CHA. This also thrusts you for the role of the parties face. Alternatively, Drow High Elf gives you Dispel Magic that uses CHA. Always liked this subclass. 9/10. For the built-in glamour.
3 ways to self proc Beguiling Twist: - 1 lvl dip into Undead Warlock for Form of Dread - Summon a Mithful Fey - use Winter Eladrin for its unique fey step This is a neatly designed subclass without being OP (Twilight, Moon, etc)
Plus that 15th level feature makes Misty Step into a mini version of Dimension Door. Sure, you don't get the DD range, but you're getting this from a second level spell. Super cool subclass!
I now really want to play a SAD melee Fey Wanderer with Shillelagh and max out Wis as soon as I can, and take some feat to implement spellcasting. Absolutely one of the best Ranger subclass, I think the second best!
For pure thematic purposes, I would try to do a couple of levels in Trickery Cleric. Gets you more spell slots for not a lot of investment and their Invoke Duplicity could be very helpful.
I think you are undervaluing beguiling twist. It doesn’t say an enemy has to cause the fear effect. You could pretty easily coordinate with your party or build a character that can cause fear effects on your one and this makes it much more likely to land
Oh yeah. Their is also the Leonins roar. You could take 5 levels of a spell caster to get the fear spell. I myself am curious how a hex blade would work so instead of wisdom and dex you focus on charisma and wisdom to get your social skills as high as possible. There is also multiclassing with the long death monk. They have synergistic ability scores, though it doesn’t come online until late level.
I honestly think this subclass is at best a 7/10. Your more than likely going to be the second face and the 11th and 15th are never really going to be in use.

Fizbans dragonborn with dragonborn fear feat works too. The metallic gets 1 extra usage.
