The GoPro Max is the second generation 360 camera from GoPro. I've been using it fairly regularly for the past month and I think I've got to know the camera well.
The GoPro max is first and foremost an action camera. While it shoots 360 video which can be viewed in VR, it's primary purpose it to capture everything then allow you to decide where the camera points later. This is achieved very easily using the App which has been completely redesigned.
The Max is rugged, waterproof and features a LCD touch screen for full manual control, a first amoung 360 cameras.
In this review i'll show you tonnes of clips, footage, videos editing on the app, desktop, photos and some awesome clips from other Max users. I'll also talk about the cameras weak points and where GoPro needs to work to ensure the camera is future proof.

Thanks Daniel, for your great review. What would you recommend: I do have a gopro hero 7, I would like to have an easy to carry 360 camera for good quality video, reframing etc. : so QooCam 8K may be great, but too large, I think..., wait for the next gen insta360? Or is the Max the best choice?

I wanted the Max for recording inside the car and also to zoom in on the Model 3 screen when I explain things. That did not work well. Zooming is not possible with this resolution. Not even a bit. The panning and reframing inside the car was amazing though, this could have been the big win with this camera.
Maybe the next generation...

Good review. I note that your monopod is not entirely invisible. I think that the problem is the 1/4-20 tripod adapter that you are using. Some of the less expensive ones do not line up the center of the monopod with the center of the 360 camera. They place one camera lens very slightly over the edge of the monopod. A few, such as Smatree and Chronos, keep all in line.

Great video. Using the normal threaded Mount was the only issue. Definitely other attachments that don’t offset which won’t be seen in stitching. Thanks for the review!

Hi, I am desperately trying to decide between the Insta360 one R and GoPro Max. I am a Windows, Android user. Has GoPro provided any significant software updates since you posted this video?
The GPM seems to have what I need, especially the ease of showing GPS overlays. The OneR seems to have better video editing. I don't want to spend more than an one hour after recording for a 30 sec video I want to post on Instagram.
How do I set up the 360 panoramic lens to record my Basketball games while hooked to a tripod ?

Hi mate, I don’t really understand camera settings too much but what is the difference between 1080p 30fps and 1440p 60 FPS when 360? I get a pop up and not to sure about this 1440 malarki
Great review thanks ! I'm still wondering if I should buy it for VR content, because I often have some project on which light is an issue. But you're saying that it's a good camera for low light situations. Would you use it on fixed footage situation, like animal watching at dawn or sunset or sunrise ? Thanks for your answer. @@RetireandGo I don't. I simetimes use the app for editing, just to create some fun pics for social media purpose. I don't like it too much. Most of the time I edit on Premiere to export some VR360 content, for clients to watch videos in VR headset.

Thanks very much for the hard work in putting the review together, basically you answered my questions I was looking for a up from my insta 360 X but I don't think the max will cut it, yes it has better audio but being a photographer rather than a videographer that doesn't really do it for me. Its sad there are so few options on the photography side, I would have thought they would have added more based on what is on the Heros nows but possibly in a firmware update. for now I think probably for me the real upgrade for the X is to the Ricoh Z1 51gb, I have had smaller Ricoh's and liked them but the insta outstripped them but with the Z the ability to shoot Raw/dng is so much better for me, I know its been out for a while and the Z is discontinued but I hope with the new 51 that they might add some firmware upgrades to it.
Apparently the reason it was dropped was due to issues of legality??? No idea why but the 51 has now replaced it if only in some hardware which we will never know but the main update in on the internal drive why o why that could not have been a sd and removable battery I don't understand but with perfect 360 spheres on two 1 inch sensors you really cant get better unless you shoot DSLR which is becoming so difficult to shoot nowadays in locations whereas the small pocket 360s are quick to get out , pop up and shoot, pop away in just a few seconds.

I realized you must live in london, I used to work in the square mile for 20 odd years and it was great to see the Lloyds again so close and the back of it unusually , also amongst the others and the market. It's been such a long time since i have been down there. Thanks very much. I realise the view is a nearly 2 years old but I don't know if any firmware has been updated on the Gopro , Ill need to check that but I just cant see it coming up to the quality of the Ricoh whatever they do, They are on a different plane and thats to be expected, the Ricoh is double the price. First I would like to thank you for the useful videos and comparisons that you display on your channel and what I would like to mention is that I couldn't configure my gopro Max recording setting neither hero mode nor 360; after checking my records unfortunately I saw a bad product quality. for example in Hero mode when I turn Max HyperSmooth On and Horizon leveling On the camera keeps recording small vibrates and the focus is blurred and not stabilized, also cant turn hypersmooth On in 360 mode, behind i couldn't play .360 video's extension on PC and their are no player can run .360 extension. I appreciate your effort if you publish gopro Max tutorial on your channel discussing some points like how to apply perfect configuration on gopro max by using both camera and phone and also on PC and other points that you believe that they are useful to us as beginner users should know to get the utmost benefit from using gopro Max to be as skillful as professionals and not as beginners . I believe that only a professional like you can provide this tutorial and I think that all your followers will appreciate that as well.
Ordered my GoPro Max before this review dropped by an hour. Just started the video, I hope I don't regret my purchase cause I kept aching over the One X Vs the Max. XD
How do you feel with your purchase today? Is it still the best quality video? I'm debating to pick one up or something else.
@@KickAssets Honestly. My last GoPro product outside of the Hero. Insta360 have run circles around them and they're too conservative and locked with it. Only things they beat them with is the ruggedness (if it doesnt hit the glass), the glass quality itself, and OMG THE MICS! SO MUCH better than the One X, but the One X2 is catching up.
But in terms of video modes, app, updates, features, stitching, community support, then sad to say but they do the bare minimum.
I'm getting an Insta360 One X2 next.

No there's no audio jack. But the Max has excellent audio all on its own
@@The360Guy I have a Hero6 and I use to do motovlog, I bought the GoPro specific audio adapter that connects via USB type C to the câmera. My question is if Max is compatible with this adapter
@@JosezitoMotovlogs oh right. I don't know for sure as I haven't used it, but the Max has USB C so there's a decent chance it will work

I’ve asked gopro and tested the external mic adapter - it definitely doesn’t work on the max :(
You should try testing the audio somewhere busy like a cafe or bar rather than a quiet park, I’ve found it doesn’t do a very good job knowing who’s voice to pick up.

Is it possible for GoPro to increase the Max FPS via an update to improve slow motion? And is that likely? Because that’s a big decider for me between that and the insta 360 one x.

got mine this week, photo is wow, cant say on video, bcouse the software for windows is shoit, so till they fix that i dont use video (looks for me not reqtangular), low light photo is wow.
I saw lots of stitching artifacts...maybe all the 360 cams suffer from that same issue? But I'm hoping with firmware/software updates those stitching artifacts can be eliminated to a large degree. Thanks for the comprehensive review. I'd like to fly this camera on a drone...it's nice to see a person can buy a $50/year accident/replacement warranty...makes my pucker factor go WAY down. :)
No, the stitching comes from the MAX having offset lenses. I don't know why they did it that way. It's not a problem for most situations but if you have object both close to the camera and far away (e.g. helmet-mounted), the nearby objects will look funny (e.g. the helmet) which can be very distracting. I fly a paraglider and this is definitely a problem, I'm probably going to switch to Insta360 X whose lenses are mounted symmetrically.

Always loved your reviews! Too bad, I think Max is not good for virtual tours then... Still can't decide what to get for virtual tours (real estate) around 500 bucks. Thinking of Theta V (since I can't afford Z1) or Insta 360 One R (or Go Pro Max but then I saw in this review the photos aren't as good as the videos).

@@TravelIsraell You just need a GoPro tripod mount adapter. You can find them on Amazon and gopro.com. The smaller the diameter of the stick, the more it will be hidden.

if you want to completely remove the stick you need a specific, flat tripod adapter otherwise regular adapter will leave a half circle or a black spot in footage

Pinnacle can edit 360 video after you exported it to your desktop
pinnacle is a pain in the butt, but it can work. PS 23 ultimate now supports cineform input/export. Haven't tried any 5.6k export yet, so not sure if they 'skipped over that' part.
Yes. Also cyberlinx Power director can edit 360 videos with keyframing. Did not try it with max. But think i gonna order one for experimenting soon.:)

I feel like the Max was a step down from the Fusion. They improved the workflow, but sacrificed everything else. I'd rather a slower workflow with better quality than the other way around.
Battery life would have been nice to add to your review but pretty good info on the cameras functionality.

Ok so I got this and have to say 1440p is a bit of a GoPro marketing lie... It's actually 1920x1440 which is just a 4:3 version of HD, basically it's HD with extra height... Erm GoPro, 1440p is meant to be 2560x1440 so this is not really 1440p. Where's my pixels gone? 😭 just had to say because I bought it thinking it shot 2K hero mode but it's just HD.

Why isnt anyone telling that go pro max is absolutelly uselless unless you get adobe with it . i bought one and didnt know that 360 videos with the regular HEVC codeck with 4k are atrociously bad quality videos and they literally put 5k behind a monthly paywall! over 20 bucks per month!???? BS!

Waterproof to 5m. Just no where for me to try that where I live haha. You'll see in my video a clip of someone kite-surfing with it

This 8 min video was a 44 GB upload to RUclips. I'm starting to get it.
There's no way to disable fish eye mode when you're taking photos in max. That's a drawback of it.
You can zoom into the final image a bit to reduce that effect
the stitch line is horrible on the 360 camera compared to the insta 360 one X. and extremely not user friendly at all if you really want to edit the videos and pictures. even the garmin was better i think

I mentioned it takes a 256GB Micro SD. As for battery it's about an hour of continuous shooting on a full charge, similar to most other 360 cameras.

What a shame! It's written "5m", but you can't dive with GoPro Max.
So the biggest downside is that the software doesn't work as well on Android? If you can afford $500 for a 360 camera you can spring for the iPhone.
yes and no, i got a simple customer android phone, still 250$ ,ok, iphone is much beter, but getting a 900$ phone for editing 360 content, meh, dont think so.

Desaster for Windows Users:
I have a GoPro MAX .... if you are a Windows 10 user like me and may others, then you will expereince that the GoPro software is a Desaster. It has problems installing, throwing error numbers at you. Then you discover that 360 editing is not in the standard software but another software, that you need to buy from the Microsoft Store. This software continually crashes is also a Desaster.
When you contact GoPro support ... they just ignore you. teh GoPro Max us great, but dont hink you are going to produce any 360 videos with it on Windows 10!

@@Happyyz android itself is fragmented. The app now has all transitions iPhone has except freeze. People running odd ball android phones have problems(gpu/CPU issues) . More Windows support is coming, but you can use 3rd party tools to reframe. Even some new iPhones have problems.
