    Lyrics:
I spoke to you in cautious tones
You answered me with no pretense
And still I feel I said too much
My silence is my self defense
And every time I've held a rose
It seems I only felt the thorns
And so it goes, and so it goes
And so will you soon I suppose

during my sophomore year of high school, we sang this in my school's chamber choir. i was the only sophomore girl in the group that year, which meant my closest friends there were juniors and seniors. we learned this piece for our final spring concert, and the emotional rollercoaster it put our group through was insane. i remember during our dress rehearsal, seeing our director watching us sing it, completely in tears. "that's what this song is about," she told us. when we performed it at the concert, part way through, almost every single one of us took hold of the hand of the person next to us, and when the piece ended, we all just cried. we cried and hugged, the audience applauded. it was the absolute greatest memory that i ever made in choir, and i cherish it every day. this song brings me so many complicated feelings, but always reminds of the special kind of love you can only form through music.

In a recent interview (Nov2015), on Howard Stern of all places, Billy Joel said this is the song he is most proud of and his best work. I had never heard it before then and I consider myself a fan. He started to play the piano and before he sang a word I wept. In an airport lobby. Like a child. He is our Mozart and I'm grateful to be born late enough to have his music in my lifetime.

My choir is singing this song at our final concert of the year and I already know I'm going to cry. I have grown so close to these people and some of them have to graduate and go off into life. Though I know I will still talk to them and keep them close to me, it's just sad knowing we won't spend everyday together anymore. I love all of these people with ever piece of my soul and couldn't have asked for a better group of people to share my passion with. They have helped me through so much this year alone and I will never have something that will measure up to the amount of gratitude I have, and the thank yous I have to say.

The first time I heard this song I was on mushrooms at Wheatley
provincial park in Ontario, Canada on the beach alone at 3am. It was a
calm clear night with a full moon as I walked along the shore of
Lake Erie. I was heartbroken, down on my luck, suffering from a long bout of depression and felt like my life was going nowhere but as I walked along the beach tripping I started to feel confident that I could turn my life around. Then this song came on my iPod. I had thrown on the music quickly without paying much attention to what I was putting on before I left so it caught me by surprise. The moment it came on shuffle a feeling of clarity overcame me in a way nothing had ever hit me before. I sat on a nearby log and stared at the water and felt sad but satisfied with that sadness. There's really no reason to tell this or share it online but it was a very special moment to me in my life and I've held it close to my heart ever since. The song always takes me back to that beach.

I hurt someone by shutting everyone out for a year or so. I needed to work on myself, because how the hell could I be there for someone if I can’t take care of myself? I hurt her bad. I became free of depression this year and decided to talk to the girl, and she’s so emotionally distant now. I shouldn’t expect any less, as this is all my fault. I talked to her today and all I wanted to say was that I would choose to be with her if it were my choice to make, but that she can make her own decisions - because whenever, if ever, she’s ready, she can have my heart to break. As necessary as the time I took was, I’m broken that it hurt her.

The first time I heard this song I was in college and if I'm not mistaken near my grandmother's passing.
My alarm was set for the radio and somehow I had incorporated this song on my dream. I remember being on the steps of someone's home weeping and feeling the loss and this became the soundtrack for that dream. It has ALWAYS had a special place in my heart and soul. Truly one of his Greatest Creations ❣️❣️

I have a lot of music in my background, but for the last few years, I haven't wanted to listen to any music. Then I heard this on an episode of Signed, Sealed, Delivered, a Hallmark? show about a small group of dedicated postal workers who do their best to deliver lost mail, no matter how old, no matter how difficult the search for the recipient. (It's also on an episode of Boston Legal/Spader and Shatner, but it didn't fit as well.)
Well, Mr. Billy Joel, when I heard this song, I had to go in search of it. Except for the last few weeks, I think it's the only music/song I've listened to in several months, once every couple of weeks or so. It's heartbreaking, but kind of in a good way, like everyone can relate in some way or other. Could be the most beautiful song I've ever heard, in great part because you sang your most vulnerable truth. Thank you.

@@theoo.2019 Of course I've heard of those....and they are fine songs as well. But as far as "his greatest song", nothing will ever top his song from 1977 "Just the Way You Are"...it was a Billboard top-3 song, and received the Grammy for Song of the Year and Record of the Year, from what most consider his greatest album, "The Stranger". Was a massive seller. And was almost scrapped at one point during production. Many consider it also one of the greatest songs of the 70s all told....and I would agree.

Though I first heard this song years ago around 2001, somehow the first time I ever understood the words was upon hearing my Pastor, who was like a beloved brother to me, sing it during a live stream show. He has since died last year and it seems that even though the song was written in a romantic sense, it fits my connection with him. He never once betrayed or hurt me in anyway, but I somehow knew our friendship would end in an unfortunate way. That said, I stuck by him and he by me. In that sense, the message of this song becomes completely uplifting and I am so grateful I was reintroduced to this amazing classic.

Billy Joel started writing this in the early 1980s. It’s about a relationship he was having with Elle MacPherson. Their backgrounds were so different that he even predicted the end of the affair with the words, “And you can have this heart to break.”
The title “And So It Goes” comes from television journalist Linda Ellerbee’s signature line.
As the name “Storm Front” (1989) suggests, the tracks on the album build in intensity like a storm front moving on. Joel included “And So” as the closer, to signify the quiet after the tempest.
The music was inspired by the traditional English folk lay “Barbara Allen” (1892). He learned the quite unique air from the “Fireside Book of Folk Songs” (1947) when he was a kid.
In 2010, the musician said that “And So It Goes” (1989) was his least appreciated song. And in 2017, he listed it among his Top 5 tunes❕
AN UNDERRATED PIECE WORTH A LISTEN OR TEN‼️ 💚🎼💙

First heard this song live as a choral performance at Barker College (Sydney) in the early 2000's. The choirmaster introduced it as a Billy Joel song, and it was sung in a higher key, and performed as a beautiful lullaby. I'm thinking that was lovely, but Billy Joel? I thought I knew his material. Clearly not, but when I found the song on Stormfront, this version is so mournful. Of course when you learn the backstory, Billy meeting and loving Elle Macpherson, knowing that you will inevitably lose her, as an Australian male I share his grief, and can understand the emotions behind the song.

This song came on the begining of winter or fall just months before I joined the Army. I was going home like 3 or 4 am on i-75 Central Expressway
Dallas Tx. and no one was on it but me as I drove alone and this song went well for that moment playing on the radio.
I remember thinking these are my final months of freedom before I go and was doubtful of my future as anyone would be, as an odd peace was around me 🛣
A yr later I'm stuck in a deep underground bunker working in S.Korea and there was a playlist of songs that played throughout the bnkr 12 hr shifts mine was 12a12pm. I made the best of the shift, get off sleep, eat, take care business, sleep get back to work or just sleep 11hrs. Amazed to hear this countless times as I worked late and I never ever saw where it was coming from or saw who made the playlist as it was made before I arrived. Such a great twist of a songs meaning and memory for me. 🖖9JUL22
