What are your (and the latest science) opinions on the correlation between early spay/neutering and osteo problems including elbow dysplasia? I got two mixed breed puppies (1 male, 1 female) from a mother who did not appear to have any issues. The male was left intact and appears normal and healthy. The female was spayed around 6 months and has struggled with weight gain and has now been diagnosed with elbow dysplasia at around 2 years old. I've read about the possible correlation between early spay/neuter (hormonal development shifts) and was concerned, but in general was told I was overreacting and that it wasn't a big concern. I'm now frustrated that I potentially caused this condition in my dog and am surprised when researching elbow dysplasia that it is rarely talked about to the layperson. Are we ignoring a potential elephant in the room? I realize nothing in science and medicine is that black and white, and nothing can ever be proven in my specific situation, but in our society of neuter, neuter, neuter, should we be stopping and taking a closer look at how is it potentially affecting our pets? I look forward to your opinion, thank you.

There’s no simple answer. Here’s a link to an ongoing series covering this subject:
