Props to Brian Windhorst for the respect and appreciation he shows towards other international teams. You will find that a good number of his colleagues and contemporaries within the US have little to no knowledge about any other international team besides Team USA, because they don't respect other teams enough to pay attention, but Windhorst does. His coverage from (and of) the FIBA Basketball World Cup up to now in the build up to Paris has been amazing, and I look forward to the basketball at the Olympics because of this man 👌🏾
I swear folks don't actually watch these games. Windy is correct in his first statement. Across the board, this is going to be a super competitive basketball tourney this year.

It's unfair that Embiid is playing for the U.S. The Olympics have lost its descendancy tradition in pitting nations against other nations. It's like a commercial league right now. Doesn't make sense.

People do realize last night was not an indication of competition right? It was a glorified scrimmage where both teams played their bench most of the second half. USA has undeniable depth but the starting lineups of a few teams are very competitive.
And it's the bench points that will ultimately end up making the difference in the Olympics.

An all best US against all best ex-US would be the closest game and most competitive game ever at a national team level.
There is high high level talent in ex-US now but it's spread in too many countries. There is not a single country that have a chance now or in near future to beat the beat US team.

i don't know if it's fearmongering as much as a healthy dose of reality. if every match were a Bo7 then I'd be right there with you in asking what are we talking about, but it's single elimination from quarter finals on and the talent level on other teams is high enough that them getting hot and us having a bad night could conceivably result in an upset. a lot of people overestimate the gap between the top tier players and the players in the next tier and I think that was a big reason most people put money on dallas to beat the celtics. yes, USA team is stacked and we should win, but it's not a lock.

My only concern is the lack of size. On a skill basis, no team comes close to the US. But even with Embiid we have a lack of size. Kind of a mystery that we don't produce big men anymore.

This Team Canada basketball team is very, very good though. They have the potential to upset Team USA just off of chemistry alone. Sure Team USA may have stacked generational talent, but it's been slapped together at the last minute. Team Canada's been training together for 3+ years now, and they have a huge chip on their shoulder. They won Bronze in the qualifiers without Jamal Murray. France and Serbia are also lethal teams.
This team is not that good... ppl are acting like this is a done deal... this is not the dream team, 08, or 12.... we have a roster with a bunch of old injured players... we could very easily lose a game...

It was more or less like that in Tokyo too. The US started badly, American reporters started saying that they're probably done, but then they won the whole thing playing well enough, so everybody forgot about their worries..
But the thing nobody talks about is that it is also unrealistic to draw conclusions once every 4 years and only based on a 12-team little tournament, that is essentially the Olympics basketball tournament.
All other teams have the same respect, if not even bigger, for the Basketball World cup, which is longer and tougher generally.
That should be the measuring stick and that should be what the US are aiming for..

The US no longer dominating and all these other countries having a legitimate shot at gold is a result of what the 1992 Dream Team gave and the efforts of the NBA to be a global brand. Basketball is now a solid second most popular sport in the world. Just like with soccer, talent is spread over several countries.
