    Hello, I started viewing your channel when you were doing the "Karate Nerd Visits Okinawa" series. I used to be rather closed minded, and thought I could only practice one art, as I've grown and watching and listening to you, I have learned how we are all connected as Martial Artists. Likewise, I thought this video would solely be for martial arts school owners, but I have learned a great deal from this video as simply a practitioner. I was very grateful for your analogy of martial arts as a mountain, and it will stay in my mind forever. Thank you very much Sensei, for your content, and your spirit. Much love from a kung fu practitioner from the United States.

    Hej Jesse

    I feel compelled to tell you, so let me apologize now for the long post, this message couldn't found me at a better time! Thanks so much! I started my journey to the top of the mountain close to thirty years ago with my father, who was a Shotokan 4th kyu practitioner. Now for the next seventeen years or so, I wasted much of my time and let my father's thoughts of a family that kicks butt together dwindle to just reading manuals, watching kata VHS tapes and punching and kicking in the mirror. Fast forward thirteen years ago, I began studying Shorinji Kempo seriously earning 3rd kyu, but just as the fire of Budo burned into my soul, my Dojo folded. The instructor graduated from college and moved away. I was devastated. None of the other students had the desire to instruct, nor did they want o learn from one of the kohai. Namely me, the only person who wanted to lead workouts. I had no idea how to run a school and the numbers grew so small that eventually after a few months we shut down completely. About that time I found BJJ, and Judo. I followed up with Judo as it fit into my budget better and eventually earned my shodan, and began helping to coach my local University team. During this time, I also started studying Kendo and Shorin Ryu Karatedo. My Judo instructor runs his program in a way that part of our development as martial artists requires that we teach for a number of years in order to continue growing. So we, his "advanced" students become the teachers of record and work with him to learn how to run a Dojo; instructing, researching, planning. coaching, and of course developing our technique. So when you said, "When one teaches, two learn," it really resonated with me. And so did your story of how your family having to adapt in order to keep the Dojo open. I was a clueless brown belt, hoping unrealistically that I could work on my own training and save the Dojo at the same time. It ISN'T as easy as just hanging up flyers to try to get people to come to class. (Even if college students think people still read them!) Most of the information people (At least the 4 billion who have internet access) take in information online and via social media. Having an adequate plan or strategy to communicate with them is VITAL in order to be successful in today's world of information! Thank you so much again!
    Domo arigato gozaimasu!

    Teacher, I have a question and I would appreciate an honest answer. I'm a security guard and I'm 34 years old. I know it's not too late to practice martial arts but my question is how should I train? I have been inactive for a decade now I just do light exercises every once in a while. My job at my post is physically demanding. Should I go to a dojo which soars regularly or should I just do kihon and kata and limited kumite to save my joints and avoid unnecessary damage? Sincerely, a respecter if all martial arts. Thank you.

    • @KARATEbyJesse
      @KARATEbyJesse  5 лет назад

      I suggest you find a local qualified martial arts professional who can assess your physical capacity and recommend an adequate training regimen 👍

    Mr. Jesse, hoping you could see my message. Do you think lifting heavy weights on legs can prevent you from being flexible? I've been doing your tips for splits and flexibility for years now and i still cant be flexible, maybe because because of having muscles on my glutes and hamstrings, can it be the reason why I cant be flexible?

    • @KARATEbyJesse
      @KARATEbyJesse  5 лет назад +1

      Muscles get big by repeated contraction. This can make your muscles short and stiff. As long as you balance it out, you can still be flexible!
