I very much liked and appreciated your video with the legend (In STL anyway), "The Golden Brett". The reason there were over 500,000 fans (conservative number) celebrating with the blues after their victory, the frustration was over and Brett Hull's time in STL started that frustration. The Blues should have won the cup in 90-91, no question. Some would argue 91-92 should have been a championship, the Blues were known as the team that chokes in the playoffs, in STL anyway. Making the playoffs every year from 85-03, never a cup. To the other post about Brett being drunk, THATS why he was drunk and I don't blame him. Awesome channel.
Always had runnings with the coach. Even with Bob Johnson and Terry Crisp with the Calgary Flames. Most famously or infamously with Mike Keenan. St. Louis won that trade but the depth in return helped in the 1989 Stanley Cup.
Should've remained a Blue his entire career because without him ever putting on that Blues sweater, there would've been no franchise in STL because the Blues was close to moving to Saskatchewan. His time in STL will be remembered for not only thrilling fans with his playmaking exploits on a nightly basis, but helping to grow & promote the game of hockey in an area that was best know for baseball & the Cardinals.
I have most of the Hockey News papers/magazines that had Hull on the cover. One from 1995 says “Playoff scoring king Brett Hull”. The second is from 2004 and says “Brett Hull: Mr. Playoffs “ followed by “Redwings Superstar NHL’s King of Spring”
It should be noted his production dipped also when we started to enter the dead puck era after the Devils cup win in 95. Scoring dipped until the next lockout so guys who were just ppg were very good.
in 91-92, Adam oates only played 61 games, and Brett scored 86 goals. in 92-93, Oates played 52 games, hull scored 70 goals. While oates was good with Hull, people give Oates a little too much credit for Hull. Hull scored even without oates. they were just both better together. Hull was a much better player overall than he will ever be given credit for (more due to his personality)
I’ve always said that as well. Despite having a lot of notoriety and being considered a very good to great player, I still believe he is pretty underrated as far as the all time greats go.
@@Hull9 He really is. People who never saw him play think he was a one-dimentional player which is super wrong. But he is the best goal-scorer I have ever seen play.

@@matthewdaley746 Don't actually understand your response. I'm still trying to figure out on what planet 650 assists is "few". No one would call Adam Oates one dimentional because he was known primarily for passing. Why does this label only apply to goal scorers? (A retorical question)
I enjoy the career videos you have been having Shannon. Of course i enjoy this one more because of my Blues bias, but good video none the less. Can't wait to see who the next career video is about
Surprised you didn't mention his age. Born in August 64, he was 23 his rookie year and was 34 his first year in Dallas. Really puts his DAL-DET days into perspective.
STL was unbelievably blessed to have Brett Hull play Hockey here, the blues have never replaced Adam Oates , they went so far out of their way to get Stevens, Shanahan, Gretzky, and others, and wasted all that time and money on Keenan, when if they just would have kept Oates they probably would have had 2-3 cups by now instead of 1. Ya none of that was Brett Hull's fault, other than he was a mess and still is, as entertaining as he can be, it's sad to watch him consistently make a fool of himself.
I remember reading an article in the Post-Dispatch after Hull signed with Dallas and it was heavily implied that the Blues would be better off, because Hull was viewed as undisciplined and that he ultimately undermined the coaches. No one doubted that the Blues played great when Hull was on the ice. The theory was that the team would benefit more from not having a guy that was above the coaches, which would benefit 20+ guys. I’ve heard similar stories from former Penguin players about Lemieux. If the coaches told Lemieux’s group to bag skate, Lemieux would just tell the boys, “No, we’re not doing that. Haha.” And they’d love Lemieux for it, but the coaches were powerless to do anything about it. The difference, though, is that Lemieux had won his Cups before that. Hull hadn’t. And the Blues did actually appear to be improving after Hull left, though, in hindsight it appears that was more of Quinneville and Pleau stabilizing the roster after firing Keenan.
As a StL fan/season ticket holder, I'll amend your impression a little bit. The problem was that he wasn't really a "leader" but the Blues were forcing him into that uncomfortable role. He wasn't the guy to build a team around, but He wasn't poison. He could be a great cog in the machine, just don't ask him to be the lynch-pin (excuse me if that's a mixed metaphor). Dallas and Detroit both used him to great advantage. Side note about O'Reilly- He IS a leader, he'll get the A next year, and would get the C if not for Pietrangelo
You totally read my mind! Earlier today I watched your Gretzky video(great vid btw), and thought about requesting you to do one on Hull. Thank you sir!
Thank for the view on his career & even if he didn't officially win a Stanley Cup in St. Louis he sure as heck Unofficially won one this year! Meant a lot how much he supported this team to the fans. Felt like he really wanted the cup bad for St. Louis. Call me crazy & superstitious but Laila was our good inspirational angel & Brett our break them, destroy them and win at all costs one sitting on the player's other shoulder's. And the Archangel Berube who completes the Blues Trinity that brought redemption. And yeah, at this point I'm not even going to try to be rational anymore and just admit it was magic on ice and I'm still loving every minute of these guys celebrating with their fans like normal people, Vlad handing out pizza, just all of them being so pardon my French but F-ing proud and yet modest. Don't see that in major league sports. In a world of bad news, I've got the Blues! And they make me want to be better than anybody thinks I can be! :D LGB!
I really don’t want to revisit years of pain, but it’d be interesting to watch a video on how Blues management has doomed the team at times. All the offer sheet debacles, Shanahan, then what happened to Stevens, Oates, Shanahan and Janney, the first round picks that the Blues owed the other franchises, Gilmour, Brindamour, trading a bunch of guys to Vancouver and the Janney ordeal, the Mike Keenan disaster, letting Brett Hull leave, getting nothing for Chris Pronger (perceived at the time, I get they got Brewer, traded him to Tampa, we drafted Binnington). If the Blues would’ve had solid ownership, maybe we don’t wait 52 years for a cup.
"What current player ends up having a career like this, where they play, and they play really really well, and they get sort of dragged through the dirt when it comes to their playoff game... they go somewhere else, play a lesser role, and, 'Oh look, they're a Stanley Cup champion.'" = Phil Kessel
Losing Stevens hurt the team for years. They lost Stevens for signing Shanahan, and the Judge ruled in favor of NJ, giving the Blues C and leader. Blues it wasn't until Keenan (only good thing he did) traded Shanahan for Pronger that they had another top D man.
Very good analysis of his career. I always liked Hull back in the day thought he was a good sniper obviously. I actually think his career is very similar to Phil Kessel. How they're portrayed by the media and how they both ended up winning a couple Stanley Cups and I'm sure by the end of the day Kessel will probably be in the Hall of Fame as well
An interesting tidbit but for most of his career Brett Hull didn't try scoring into empty nets. I just watched a Gretzky highlight reel and his 50 in 39. The last goal and who knows how many more was an empty net goal.
I heard Terry crisp the Calgary coach didn't like Brett and his fun loving college party ways so he wanted him out as a blues fan thank you coach crisp who by the way was a blues player on the earlier blues cup teams 68-70. I never blamed Brett once for the playoff heartbreak. Management was awful from getting rid of Scott Stevens ,rod brindamour, and Adam oates. Mike Keenan a disaster and I always wondered why the blues never kept Bob Barry as head coach who led the blues to a sweep over the heavily favored hawks in 93 who I believe we're president trophy winners that wasn't good enough? Brett did all he could and helped make hockey popular in saint Louis again.
Peter Zezel was Hull’s center when he scored 72 Oates was his center when he scored 86 Oates was traded mid year the next year and his centers switched. Hull and Oates only played 1.5 years together as linemates.
Brett was one of the guys I hated most for years and years . When Detroit got him to be honest I was pissed . ..even though I knew he was a hell of a pick up . I changed my mind after really getting to hear his sense of humor and personality . He went from being hated by me to being one of my favorite players in a few months and while his play helped that obviously more so it was his interviews and such. I about died laughing watching clips of his blues cup reaction !
One quick thing, Adam Oates didn’t want out of STL, what he wanted was more money. After renegotiating his contract and still not being satisfied and wanting to do it again the Blues said no. Oates started getting very pouty and that’s when management said enough and he was dealt to Boston. Brett Hull is my favorite player of all time. As St. Louis kid who started playing hockey at 7 years old in 1987 watching his 3 straight 70+ goal seasons made him larger than life in my eyes. One of if not the greatest pure goal scorers to ever lace’em up.

the closest to that this year was Perron, who left the Blues, came back, left for Vegas and came back again.
It will still happen sometimes but gone is the stigma.
@@iron1349 I'm new to the channel and not sure if he's covered this before, but Perron has to own one of the oddest NHL "records" in that he has played for 4 other NHL teams, yet every contract he has signed in his career has been with the Blues.
I wonder if, that hasn't happened before .
We stopped it at Backes.
Blues with Hull, Shanahan, and Cujo should have been a cup or two. Btw...need career videos on Shanny and Cujo.
My first hockey game my uncle took me to in 89, he said "watch this guy Hull, he's going to be something" and he was right😁
I very much liked and appreciated your video with the legend (In STL anyway), "The Golden Brett".
Seeing you in blues gear looks good shannon!!!
Happy fathers day Shannon. That family has done so much for hockey. It was fun to watch Brett celebrate the St. Louis Blues winning a Stanley Cup.
Brett can outscore and out party anyone. The Golden Brett!!!!!
Brett Hull is the reason I became I hockey fan.
He was actually very outstanding in the playoffs, more than I remembered.
Ray Bourque comes to mind as a guy who "couldn't get it done" and won it with a different team.
I was really happy for him in 1996, i think it was.
Perpetual Student it was 2001, I know because he beat my NJ devils
It should be noted his production dipped also when we started to enter the dead puck era after the Devils cup win in 95. Scoring dipped until the next lockout so guys who were just ppg were very good.
Did it all !Love the guy.
Keep up your good sense of humor in your videos. It works.
in 91-92, Adam oates only played 61 games, and Brett scored 86 goals. in 92-93, Oates played 52 games, hull scored 70 goals.
@@matthewdaley746 No 650 assists is not "few" by any stretch of the imagination. yes he was better at scoring goals, but was a good passer as well. 650 assists is better than 99% of the nhl. But dont let facts stand in the way of ignorance.
But I saw him play in his prime, so im not just spouting off nonsense like some people here.
@@matthewdaley746 Don't actually understand your response. I'm still trying to figure out on what planet 650 assists is "few".
No one would call Adam Oates one dimentional because he was known primarily for passing. Why does this label only apply to goal scorers? (A retorical question)
@@matthewdaley746 Thanks for trying to answer. I still want to visit your world where 650 assists is "few".
I been waiting for this video🔥
I remember reading an article in the Post-Dispatch after Hull signed with Dallas and it was heavily implied that the Blues would be better off, because Hull was viewed as undisciplined and that he ultimately undermined the coaches. No one doubted that the Blues played great when Hull was on the ice. The theory was that the team would benefit more from not having a guy that was above the coaches, which would benefit 20+ guys.
I’ve heard similar stories from former
Penguin players about Lemieux. If the coaches told Lemieux’s group to bag skate,
Lemieux would just tell the boys, “No, we’re not doing that. Haha.” And they’d love
Lemieux for it, but the coaches were powerless to do anything about it. The difference, though, is that Lemieux had won his Cups before that. Hull hadn’t.
And the Blues did actually appear to be improving after Hull left, though, in hindsight it appears that was more of Quinneville and Pleau stabilizing the roster after firing Keenan.
@@matthewdaley746 Rather like you're doing with your opinions, eh?
As a StL fan/season ticket holder, I'll amend your impression a little bit. The problem was that he wasn't really a "leader" but the Blues were forcing him into that uncomfortable role. He wasn't the guy to build a team around, but He wasn't poison. He could be a great cog in the machine, just don't ask him to be the lynch-pin (excuse me if that's a mixed metaphor). Dallas and Detroit both used him to great advantage.
Side note about O'Reilly- He IS a leader, he'll get the A next year, and would get the C if not for Pietrangelo
My favorite player when I was a kid
I loved his snap shot
You totally read my mind! Earlier today I watched your Gretzky video(great vid btw), and thought about requesting you to do one on Hull. Thank you sir!
Thanks for being as amazing as you are.
You should do a vid about Tony Amonte, I never hear his name, but he was great player for a time.
He really was. I enjoyed watching him play.
:D LGB!
Hull was a legend during his goal blitz!!!
Great video as always!
That is incredible
awesome vid guy!
Always remember the 2 kids and old goat line, what a quote machine he is
I wrote a letter to the St. Louis Blues in 1990 and they sent me an postcard autographed by Brett Hull. I still have it.
One of the best goal scorers...ever!
"What current player ends up having a career like this, where they play, and they play really really well, and they get sort of dragged through the dirt when it comes to their playoff game... they go somewhere else, play a lesser role, and, 'Oh look, they're a Stanley Cup champion.'" = Phil Kessel
And now he’s breaking drinking records lol. Love that guy.
Don't forget the Scott Stevens ordeal for the Blues in the 90's hurting their cup chances....
Losing Stevens hurt the team for years. They lost Stevens for signing Shanahan, and the Judge ruled in favor of NJ, giving the Blues C and leader. Blues it wasn't until Keenan (only good thing he did) traded Shanahan for Pronger that they had another top D man.
Go blues
he was at the cup peraid yesterday
If Gretzky didn't get to 100 goals in 81-82 when it took him only 39 games to get to 50 goals nobody will.
Remember Brett Hull never took a Empty Net Goal. Could have had a lot more goals.
He eventually did starting taking empty net opportunities, but you are correct that during his prime years he would not take shots on an empty net.
Very good analysis of his career. I always liked Hull back in the day thought he was a good sniper obviously. I actually think his career is very similar to Phil Kessel. How they're portrayed by the media and how they both ended up winning a couple Stanley Cups and I'm sure by the end of the day Kessel will probably be in the Hall of Fame as well
Nice commentary!
An interesting tidbit but for most of his career Brett Hull didn't try scoring into empty nets. I just watched a Gretzky highlight reel and his 50 in 39. The last goal and who knows how many more was an empty net goal.
Brett Hull 11
Gretzky 56
Brett hull is Ovechkining with the cup, its pretty funny, he had no impact on them winning it 😁
8:06 dallas was in the pacific
My 2 favorite players on the team Brett hall. Tony Twist, In two weeks of the Wayne gretzky!
Peter Zezel was Hull’s center when he scored 72
Oates was his center when he scored 86
Oates was traded mid year the next year and his centers switched.
Sweet! I love Brett Hull!
A Bernie Federko video would be awesome!
@@matthewdaley746 thanks, so helpful.
@Don Schmidt won't stop Daley here from giving his pissy opinion.
Drunk Brett Hull is the funniest thing I've ever seen, and I've seen things
Loved your video on Adam Oates. Very pertinent to this video...I grew up cheering for “Hull & Oates” and I think if they were able to stay together StL would have at least made it to the finals
02 red wings were ridiculous
Brett "the drunkest man in America" Hull :D
