"Watching Coco for the first time", the plot twists left me speechless. I usually pride myself in figuring out movie plot twists, but Coco managed to leave me stunned!
Usually at the end of every "movie reaction" I looovee to do a "movie review" or a "movie commentary" but I couldn't muster up the strength to. The movie Coco left me DRAINED and in tears to say the least. I hope you all enjoyed the reaction! Please like and consider subscribing for more movie reactions like this. Girl, I knew you were in for it when you said you had a family member with dementia. Its so hard to suffer through, both for the patient and the family. For me, this movie wrecked me because it came out a few months after I lost my dad, who was also a musician (and a guitarist) and I still miss him so much.

Likewise, I lost my father a year before this came out. A few months later, I reached a milestone birthday, and while I had a happy day, I did think of him, and wished he could have been there. Then that evening, I went to see Coco, knowing nothing much about it. Honestly, this movie felt like a birthday gift from him. It's one of my favourite films.

Yeah this movie hurts so bad if you've ever lost someone to dementia. It's hard to watch sometimes but the crying can be therapeutic. Next you're going to watch Up which I'll tell you now is equally as emotional but it doesn't have a dementia subplot so when you watch it, I hope you have that little peace of mind. Much love for you and your family ❤️

Ok, so bit of Mexican insight!
The orange flowers are "cempasúchil", and are related to the dead, probably because of their strong smell. We decorate our graveyards with them every Día de los Muertos (halloween for y'all, and lasting until Nov. 3rd).
Dogs are believed to be our spiritual guides, like cats were for the Egyptians. Guiding our deceased towards the Mictlán (mexica's dead world).
Dante is a Xoloesquintl (I think is right, never learned the way to write it) which is the first dog we domesticated, and is the breed of dog we relate to the pre colonization time (right now there are barely few left that aren't a mix breed)
Ehm... Oh yeah, the funky colors animals. They are Alebrijes, a mix of 2 or more animals, and it's supposed we all have one in the spiritual world, and they are related to the "nahuales", highly spiritual people (chamans, warlocks and such) that can reach to their Alebrije and morph into their animal.
... I don't know if there's more "deep Mexican lore" in the movie, the rest, like Frida doing an sculpture, is general knowledge

Out of the songs in this movie, my favorite is "Un Poco Loco", which translates to "a little crazy". Also, speaking as a Mexican-American, this movie is pretty factual to real-life preparations/mythos for El Dia De Los Muertos, or the Day Of The Dead. Especially with Dante's role. As a breed of dog called a Xoloitzquintli (zo-low-eats-queent-lee), he has a role of being a spirit guide through the afterlife. Also, I find it SO hilarious that the receptionist that helped the Rivera family with Miguel was voiced by Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias.

I put off watching this film because I wasn't sure if it would be my thing, but my God did it hit extremely hard. My grandad had dementia before he passed and my nan (now 95) has had both dementia and Alzheimers for over 3 years, so we moved her in with us and my mum and I were her carers until last month when our house became inaccessible for her drastically declining mobility. The Remember Me song is absolutely stunning and resonates so deeply that it instantly causes me to get choked up.
    ..
My grandad struggled to remember some of his grandchildren when they weren't right in front of him, so I made him a sheet with names and hotos, as well as which ones belonged to each of his daughters. I also collated some old jazz because he used to play the piano. Out of fear it would distress him, my family sort of disallowed me to encourage him to try the piano again (he played most of his life but had forgotten how), but I played him the music every time I stayed with him and my nan.... One day he started playing the piano again, not quite as well as he used to, but it came back. I don't get a chance to share that much because I don't want it to feel like gloating or anything (as I was able to see him more, as I wasn't in school or work at the time), but it's one of my proudest achievements. Music has so much power and some of my core memories are of listening to old jazz with him and my nan or watching Columbo/Murder, She Wrote/etc. and they're still some of my comfort go-to things. My grandad was my first experience with dementia (or Alzheimer's) and it started when I was about 16. I poured my heart and soul into trying to help him remember things when his daughters obviously had to focus more on the practical things (healthcare, Power of Attorney, etc.) and my nan was his primary carer (I helped with some appointments and in-home stuff, to take a little pressure off my nan). I even read the eulogy at his funeral. Every year, we acknowledge his birthday, but this year we kind of forgot because my nan ended up having to go to hospital (she waited 15 hours for an ambulance, so she didn't actually go until the next day and had to stay overnight), so it was too hectic to even remember it.
    ..
I don't know a whole lot about Dia de los Muertos, but I do appreciate what a beautiful celebration it is and I'm so glad this movie showcased it

Bless your heart chica! This movie even though it's a cartoon really strikes at your heart cords not just as Hispanic people but anyone who had to watch a grandparent that they loved slowly leave you. It's going to sound crazy but you're eventually going to look at this later and laugh at yourself crying over a cartoon but it will also help you remember the joy and happiness that your grandparents shared with you and that's one of the points of the movie IMO. Always "remember me"

This is such an incredibly beautiful movie, I always cry over it.
It's hard isn't it, having a family member with dementia, knowing all that they were and seeing that it just isn't there anymore. When I visit my grandpa there's always a little moment of recognition, and it isn't much, but I hope that at least for those few seconds he feels loved.

I really enjoyed your reaction to my favorite animated movie. It rips me apart every time I watch it and yet, I could watch it over and over again. My mom passed in 2017. She started having problems in January and was gone by June. She was diagnosed with dementia, accelerated by seizures impacting her brain. Though my mom was relatively young at 65, Some expressions and movements Mama Coco makes reminded me so much of my mother that it was truly painful at first. Im glad i didnt watch this when it came out in 2017(I think)because i was already in so much pain, looking after my ailing and struggling mom. I dont think i could have handled watching Coco while i was going through losing my mom. I was in a much better to place to watch it for the 1st time 2 years ago. I have since watched it so many tines that I wore my husband out on it. I still cry but the one part that gets me EVERY TIME is the end when Miguel is singing surrounded by living and dead family. Mama Coco has her arm around Elena (abuela). That tears my heart out. My mom was my best friend and i always see me and her in Coco and Abuela. Its very obvious Elena loves her mom. She cares for her so tenderly even while in a mood with other family!

i'm so sorry about your grandma
i lost my grandma (nonnie) in august, and she had dementia too
she didn't pass from anything related to it, really - she had other issues that would have required surgery, but apparently anesthesia can make dementia a lot worse and so my family opted to keep her comfortable and she made it 5.5 more months in hospice (which is meant to be 6 months or less) - she was 90
last time i saw her, about two weeks before she passed (she was in a care facility a couple hours from me) she pulled me in for a hug and then she lightly hit our foreheads together and said "bang!" and it was really sweet and showed she kept her sense of humor, even with the dementia
anyway, this movie hits really different with a family member with dementia and i'm sorry you had a rough time ♥ i hope you're doing okay, as okay as you can in that situation

Girl I understand the pain, I watched my grandma Lucia suffer through Alzheimer’s and dementia. It’s absolutely brutal to have to watch. I never even spoke the same language as her fluently but she helped raise me and my brothers, she lived with us most of my life aside from going back and forth to Chile and then going into a nursing home. It’s heartbreaking to watch and I’m sorry you have to experience even an ounce of that pain. Much love to you and your family mamas💚

I'm a Mexican and even though I'm not catholic and thus, I don't completely celebrate the day of the death; I loved the way they portrayed it in this movie, they didn't bring any religious topics and kept everything I find graceful about this tradition.

Not to be weird, but do you have a Venmo or somethhing? For your Mom's travel/missing work/expenses

    • @michelleneedsahobby
      @michelleneedsahobby  7 месяцев назад

Not weird at all and no I don’t have venmo or anything of that nature. My mom doesn’t frequently travel to see her, but she does partly pay for her in-house nurse and medical expenses back home in Jamaica(She and all 4 of her siblings financially provide for her). I wouldn’t say money is the issue, it’s more so a hope she’s there in person to say goodbye when she passes.
I do wish for my grandma to peacefully pass in her sleep, but there is a selfish part of me that would want there to be warning signs so my mom could get on a plane and see her when it happens.
Thank you so much for the reaching out, you truly are a kindhearted individual. Knowing that the world has people like yourself, people who are willing to reach out a hand when those are need is absolutely faith restoring. God bless and once again thank you reaching out. 🌹
