Even though I was too little to understand the themes (and too little to be allowed to see the nudity) something about it kept me rapt in attention. The sequels don't deliver in plot, but the concepts and effects (especially in 3) make up for it.

Yeah it's kind of a litmus test of people's level of education. Growing up in a small town everyone thought this movie was legit 100% serious--or even an allegory for [insert war America fought in here]! Glad I left home.
Do you know why the CGI is so much better here? It’s because it’s a combination of CGI practical effects, back screen, etc. and the Director knows how to use each one effectively to to suspend your disbelief. Also it’s about keeping the viewer engaged enough to suspend the disbelief. It doesn’t matter that computers have gotten so much more powerful if the Director doesn’t know when to use what and how to use it.
The final death was my favourite, because he went out like a bad ass before he blew himself up. Going as much as far as taunting them. This death always stuck out to me, and it’s a shame this movie never even did as well as I actually thought it did back in the day, apparently this was a major flop, but I can swear as a kid, I remember this being everywhere, the marketing was amazing and legit everywhere for what was classified as a B Movie back then. I must have rented this movie a solid twenty times as well from Blockbuster, so it boggles my mind how it flopped.

“DO IT RICO! ….CALL A MEDI…”-BOOM-
Dude, his body is ripped in half. I'm not a genius, but I very much doubt any Medic in existence would be able to do anything about that. He's pretty much gone.
@@13Gangland it only got his legs, the reason he wanted him to shoot him was because even if he did survive he’d be in incredible pain and disabled for the rest of his life
Needed those 3 armour and 3 weapon upgrades.
Natural Selection 2 much?
I was thinking abut starcraft.
they just need some bunker , but starship 2 ruin it
Frost Richtofen I
They wasted all their money on extended magazine upgrades
Love how the soldiers still fire in small bursts even when their comrades are getting eaten
While, at the same time, more important disciplines go out the window
This movie is still in my top 10. A movie done in the 90s it's done so freaking well.
I never get over how utterly useless their weaponry is.
Thousands of bullets for one bug.
No wonder they had so many casualties
Later on it appears they got better ammunition or something. And despite how it appears, they dont take that many casualties on screen. The much bigger issue is the utter lack of tactical air support/artillery and armored vehicles
Its possible to kill the bugs in just one burst, maybe less.
The problem is the infantry's training was just so shit and the command couldnt be bothered to actually train them to shoot for the nerve stem so they sorta just sprayed and fired at the thing till it died
@@KriegCommisar I think they abandoned vehicles because they're geared up for a war vs humans, where shoulder fired weapons can carry nukes, so they went 1950s US nuke army where one rifle is meant to service every weapon platform (M14 and its variants) and nukes do the rest. They rely on air assault which doesn't work against bugs who don't have fear of being wounded or killed.
In this movie they looked so real. THen in the later ones they looked fake as shit.
I think it's cuz in the others they just used CG, this one they nicely mixed practical effects too
Similar to Alien. In the 3rd, when they used CGI, it suddenly turned much smaller, and green.
Ardaric Brutamo lol xenomorph from alien 3 was smaller bescue It was a runner type
Qubox true but the cgi made the thing fucking green when it was cgi. if that was gonna happen then make the fucking thing green in the first place so that it doesnt look stupid as shit when they cgi it.
This movie had $100 million dollar budget compared to a $9-18 million for the other two movies
The effects in this movie hold up really well
Anyone else just wish for another really well made starship troopers film?
2:21 is the exact reason you will never get me in an army to fight giant bugs
3:50
Love the little characterisations here. One laughs and the other looks at him like "dude, seriously?"
Then Rico looks back at the unfortunate schmuck like "ah well..."
0:33 now THIS is how to be a good cameraman! There are many bad examples out in the youtubes...
7:29 "Well, that's the R rating in the bag" 😜
I remember I was randomly introduced to this movie as a little girl, it became my favorite of all time. Even though I was too little to understand the themes (and too little to be allowed to see the nudity) something about it kept me rapt in attention. The sequels don't deliver in plot, but the concepts and effects (especially in 3) make up for it.
The over embellishment of every death in this movie is what helped made it so good.
Of course, the first thing any EMT, Doctor, paramedic, etc. will tell you in the case of impalement like at 5:25, NEVER remove what's actually impaled because you can actually cause the person to bleed out.
2:30 - why you should never retreat from a fight
Bug : 😈
Soldier : this sucks 😳
Bug : it will with our boss 🧠🐛
And thats one of the reasons we have commisars!
*pulls out bolt pistol* NOT ONE STEP BACK GUARDSMAN FIGHT FOR THE IMMORTAL EMPEROR! ONLY IN DEATH DOES DUTY END!!
Yeah OK there, Adolf.
Fucking CLASSIC film, I remember when it first came out, absolutely GORY AF, and still rocks today 20 years later!
I always found ironic that the Warrior Bug and the cow was censored, but the filming of the _aftermath of Klendathu, a literal mass grave full of corpses,_ wasn't.
The bit where the soldier removes his helmet, gets brains blown out and Rico just goes full comedy timing...
"MEDIIIIIIIC" 😂
New Trooper, "How bad was the fighting on Big K?"
Survivor, "Not even the cameramen were spared."
New Trooper, "My god!"
By far one of the best damn sci-fi movies ever. Just amazing. :)
Im still amazed over the CGI, it's honestly better than most films nowdays.
Sorry for the fans but ST2 and 3 are shit. This one is awesome!
thats true i love this one but the others are really bad
I recommend the animation movie Starshiptroopers: Invasion. It's pretty good and closer to the novel.
You're right, they could have been better
ST3: Marauder is very good movie. Only ST2 is low-cost sh*t.
Hahaha this one is a piece of shit too... it's some kind of guilty pleasure
I'm here because of Helldivers 2
The CGI in this movie still look so good, its been almost 30 years
seeing this again made the top of my head feel weird :(
Luke Williams Like something stabbed it and the sucked the blood out of it?
Awww...this is a classic movie. I remembered when I watched this in a very young age.(like 6 years old) It was scary but found it enjoyable to watch as an adult
This movie has better gore effects than most movies and tv shows these days.
For a 1997 movie, this is still great in 2023.
Salute our brave Helldivers
Never even watched this movie, but after the first few seconds of this and continually since the start, I find it absolutely stunning that this apparently wasn't regarded as a satire back when it came out.
Oh if only it was back then. Some folk still take the movie at face value despite the years of the director saying what it really was
Yeah it's kind of a litmus test of people's level of education. Growing up in a small town everyone thought this movie was legit 100% serious--or even an allegory for [insert war America fought in here]! Glad I left home.
0:42 New Yorkers when a fight breaks out.
5:57 is the most brutal, they’re literally melting alive. You can see their faces fall apart and eyeballs popping out
Do you know why the CGI is so much better here? It’s because it’s a combination of CGI practical effects, back screen, etc. and the Director knows how to use each one effectively to to suspend your disbelief. Also it’s about keeping the viewer engaged enough to suspend the disbelief. It doesn’t matter that computers have gotten so much more powerful if the Director doesn’t know when to use what and how to use it.

Disney Writers: 'They fly now!, Yeah they fly now!'
Just imagine this violence level in modern cinema...
I watched this in theaters as a kid. The 90's were just, different lol
1:56 I love how overly confident this dude is just to immediately get killed so brutally while they all just stand there and watch 😅
Yeaaa he caught it the worst imo
The final death was my favourite, because he went out like a bad ass before he blew himself up. Going as much as far as taunting them.
This death always stuck out to me, and it’s a shame this movie never even did as well as I actually thought it did back in the day, apparently this was a major flop, but I can swear as a kid, I remember this being everywhere, the marketing was amazing and legit everywhere for what was classified as a B Movie back then.
I must have rented this movie a solid twenty times as well from Blockbuster, so it boggles my mind how it flopped.
"I"m a little happy bug and I'm gonna get you!"
"I'm a little teeny bug and I'm gonnna get you!"
Same...loved this movie back in the day and still love it to this day.
Starship Troopers happened to come around the same time a little film coming out as well: “Titanic “. The rest is history. Although I saw Starship Troopers in the theater as well and it was great. The effects still hold up today. Hats off to the special effects team for this movie. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
There's always that one person in a battle scene that runs out of the group right up in front of the enemy and is like "oh yaaa you wanna piece of me!!??" And then just die horribly a second later lol
If your looking at this and your playing Helldivers 2 use this whole video as fuel to drive back those bugs AND TAKE BACK OUR FREEDOM FOR SUPER EARRRRRRRRTH 🔥🔥🔥
I gotta get this movie!
Federation war reporter: ''... it's an ugly planet, a bug planet."
Arachnid Warrior Bug: ''And I took this personally!"
I really hope paul verhoven returns to making american Sci Fi movies one day, he's movies are still rewatched to this day, they are so cool
I'm hoping and still waiting for that to be true to this day...😢
It would have been so awesome if he had directed a Dead Space with an unlimited budget. Can you imagine the gore? Hope he does something special before he's too old...
best goriest movie ever.
Braindead
:D
Do you like Braindead as well? I think it's better than this.
yeah!
we need a sentry right there
Masterpiece ! Thank you Mr. Verhoeven .
Casual reminder that the upcoming game wants us to fight these fuckers with just four of us.
We did it once before, we’ll fucking do it again.
FOR LIBERTY!!!! FOR DEMOCRACY!!!! *FOR SUPER EARTH!!!!*
Awesome movie!!! Good effects, amazing story and production. Good looking people definetely my fourth space franchise I love!!!

Haha poor Camera Guy 😭 1:16
He’s usually invincible in everything else except this movie! 😂
Imagine being 4 years old and watching this movie, that was me, it was a little bit traumatic but not enough to make me stop watching it, at the end I was having existential crisis because of the girl’s death, now I feel good nostalgia, good movie that’s for sure.
bruh same, I was kid watching this thanks to my sister, watching this all over again brings nostalgia haha
I watched this over and over again when i was 8 years old. Too young to understand everything
@@reeyees50 same lol good times tho
So whos here from Helldivers!

This is what happens when you go full Hudson. Never go full Hudson.
The combination of CG and practical effects really sells the deaths in this films, the impacts and gore really feel so much better than what we see with the floaty video game like effects we see now.
Had no idea what this movie was about when a friend asked me to go see a "sci Fi" movie about bugs in space. Little did I know it would also be the first time I dropped acid.
