  • Today I'm joined by ‪@PeterMarinari‬ and we wanted to take some time to answer the over abundance of questions about the newly announced X-MEN: MUTANT MASSACRE PRELUDE OMNIBUS. What it means for the possibilities of collecting X-men in Oversized Hardcover format; Why didn't they release this instead of Uncanny X-men Omnibus Volume 5; What options are there if you want to read everything or just stick to X-men. There seems to be lots of people upset and so many questions, so we hope to answer most of them and also talk about future releases and what they can mean if you are a collector for a specific series.

    As always, it was a privilege and a joy to join Omar to talk X-Men and omnibus mapping with you all! I know the timing of the Prelude to Mutant Massacre omnibus announcement was frustrating to a lot of folks, but thinking about it for a few days helped me find a silver lining to it. I hope some of you are seeing that now, too. (Plus, always so much fun to hang out with all the Minties in the chat! Shhh, don't tell Omar about how much fun we're having without him in the chat.)

    A couple thoughts.
    1) Marvel certainly has the right to print whatever/however they want. But, if they want to keep the goodwill of the community - and I maintain that this is a big part of their success, NMC's existence proves it - they would be wise to make it clear to consumers the disparity between Event and Line books somehow. This could easily be done in solicits.
    2) Given that UCX volumes 1-4 have the old spine and UCX 5+ all have the new spine design, this makes it much easier for me to just go with the Event books for this era of X-Men. I'm guessing presales for UCX 6+ will be terrible.
    3) I would LOVE to get Peter's slides sent out. Could this be a Patreon thing?

      @@Strat-o-casterWhich by then given they’ve now released a ‘Mutant Massacre prelude’ they should’ve at least announced stuff like post inferno, x-tinction agenda and post Jim Lee in their own omnis, otherwise we’ll more or less be in the same scenario with brand new collectors being prioritised over ones which have encouraged and supported them to be in the position to make these decisions.

    • @g-roy23
      @g-roy23 10 месяцев назад +5

      They really should’ve just left the current line of x-omnis as they were and just (continue to) follow the trail of thought we’ve all had for ages.
      Uncanny 1-4, Massacre Prelude, Massacre, Fall of Mutants, Inferno Prologue, Inferno, Inferno Aftermath, Jim Lee 1, X-Tinction Agenda with Days of Future Present, Jim Lee 2 etc…
      Drop the “events” talk, that reeks of a revisionist take, it all fits like a glove and doesn’t need playing with.

      @balkthor 10 месяцев назад

      @@g-roy23 Precisely. And as I HATE the new spines, I’m happy to donate my copy of UCX5 to my kid’s school and just pick up the Prelude. I already have the Massacre omni anyway, and X-Factor for that matter.

    • @bungleist1
      @bungleist1 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@g-roy23 Not quite like a glove even for X-Men-only collectors, because X-Men Annual #12 comes between UXM #234 and 235 but is missing from Inferno Prologue.
      For New Mutants collectors, not like a glove in the slightest. There's double dipping on about 20% of the pages in NM vol. 2 (New Mutants (1983) #46, Special Edition (1985) #1, Annual (1984) #2; X-Men Annual (1970) #9-10), and going purely by currently released/announced omnis on around 50% of the pages in NM vol. 3 (New Mutants (1983) #55-73; Power Pack (1984) #40; Uncanny X-Men (1981) #231; X-Terminators #1-4).
      I assume you're proposing that Inferno Aftermath only collect New Mutants and X-Factor material, plus perhaps X-Men Annual #12? That's going to double dip on Claremont & Lee vol. 1 otherwise. If so, that book including all issues + specials from both series between Inferno and X-Tinction Agenda seems realistic (New Mutants (1983) #74-94, Annual #5, Summer Special #1; X-Factor (1986) #41-59, material from Annual #4; X-Men Annual (1970) #12). This would at least solve the problem with NM vol. 3 as well as with future XF omnis.
      To me, it seems nice that we'll eventually have the option to collect the same X-Men, New Mutants, and X-Factor material contained in your list of books in something like Uncanny 1-8, X-Factor: OXM 1-2, and New Mutants 2-3 (Uncanny 6 being the X-Men material in FotM to Inferno, Uncanny 7 being Claremont & Lee 1 + DoFP and Uncanny 8 being Claremont & Lee 2 + X-Tinction Agenda but probably minus C&L 2's X-Factor issues), and also fitting in (almost) seamlessly with New Mutants 1 and X-Factor by Peter David 1.
      New Mutants 4 seems likely to collect DoFP and X-Tinction Agenda in their entirety (since there are only 15 issues + 2 annuals between the contents of NM 3 and the end of the series), but double dipping there can be avoided by sticking with the Claremont & Lee books instead of Uncanny 7-8. X-Factor 2 has 43 issues and 4 annuals just of XF to collect, so hopefully we won't see too much double dipping there - though of course Marvel may end up splitting this into two books so that DoFP and X-Tinction Agenda can be printed in their entirety there, too.
      Collecting the three series' omnis instead of the event omnis will most likely also eliminate most of the non-mutant fluff that a lot of people don't want, especially when it comes to Inferno :)

    Omar your explanation is appreciated and I would never blame the messenger. But if Marvel wasn't greedy in the planning, they are still greedy now. With this they have a lot of unhappy costumers stuck with a book they did not know they did not want. This would be easily compensated by them publishing an OHC of the X-factor issues for those that bought Uncanny 5 and do not want to double dip with X-factor 1 or this prelude. Obviously they aren't doing that. And about the other books I will have the same problem with the Roger Stern one but in this case I choose to buy it anyway in the same I always refused to buy the Vs Venom book. My informed choice, not the case here.

    Dont know if youre reading comments Omar, but a thought to pass along to Marvel.
    This should be numbered on the back like they do with epics and Brubaker Cap. Label it X-Events 1.
    Then they can review all the other x omnis. Any that are events should be numbered (with gap fillers planned out) and then numbered on any reprints.
    If you then announce that planned numbering and what existing books are included it would cause less confusion for people in future

    I’m still trying to figure out why there was criticism over the paper quality of UXM omnibus vol 5. I do understand there were some QC issues in regards to ink spots, pages sticking together, ripped pages, creased pages, and ripped/creased dust jackets. However, in terms of paper quality, I find that it is similar to the first printing of UXM omnibus vol 3(both vol 3 and 5 have almost the same page count). At a quick glance, the two books look like they are the same size. After months of close inspection, vol 3 is slightly thicker(not by much), but it is not that noticeable, to me. There are a large number of Marvel Omnis(as well as other books) from years ago that had paper that I thought was questionable, but I really never saw any complaints, back before 2016. Even looking back on some old forums, the paper quality of some books I thought were questionable, no one mentioned that. They seemed more concerned with the gutter loss or gutter roll and glued binding and the eye of the book. It wasn’t until around late 2020/early 2021 when the paper police came out in full force. Honestly, I think the majority of the people who have complained since then are newer collectors who never experienced some books from the past that also had questionable paper. There were some DC tpbs years ago that had paper that was one step away from tissue quality! The people nowadays would have gone crazy over that!

    • @djsuth7727
      @djsuth7727 10 месяцев назад +1

      You're probably right - more collectors means more criticism. And for the record, I didn't find the paper quality in UXM vol 5 to be too bad either. I can think of several others in recent memory that were far worse eg. Aaron's Thor vol 1.

    For me, I'm good. I was always going to get X-Men v5 and X-Factor v1. I can pass on the MM Prelude but would be tempted to double dip if they put the books in release order in the omni. For example, X-Men 210 followed by X-Factor 9, etc.

    Another scenario worth noting…it could have been possible that after releasing UXM vol 4 and with all of the events upcoming, that UXM 4 would be the end of the numbered vols and the way to collect UXM moving forward would be in the event Omnis. That had been my thinking since UXM 4 was announced. Yes, I had seen some people mention that they didn’t care about New Mutants/X-Factor, etc, and they didn’t want that stuff in UXM numbered Omnis, but ultimately, it would be unavoidable with all of the events.

    • @NMan40
      @NMan40 10 месяцев назад +2

      I’m not sure what you mean. Sorry. What I was saying is that before UXM vol 4 had been announced, we had: X-Men Silver Age Omnis 1 and 2, UXM vol 1-3, Mutant Massacre omnibus, Fall Of The Mutants OHC, Inferno Prologue OHC, Inferno OHC and Crossovers OHC(I think Inferno omnibus was announced soon after UXM vol 4), along with some later OHCs that are farther down the line. I know I was wondering, along with others, when would a follow up to UXM omnibus vol 3 be announced? It was pretty long in between vol 3 and 4. Also, we wondered if it would even be called vol 4. Well, when we found out about vol 4, the majority of people I interacted with, automatically thought that the next vol after UXM 4 would be the Road To Mutant Massacre or some similar name. We thought since a large portion of the run had been released already, there would be no need to remap. There were hopes, even back in 2018, that some of the old books would be reprinted for people who never bought them or passed on them back in the day.

    • @g-roy23

    • @NMan40

      @@g-roy23Ok! I understand now! Yes, people definitely thought that this Mutant Massacre Prelude should have been the book to be released to bridge the gap to Mutant Massacre once UXM 4 was announced. The announcement of that vol 5 was a game changer for sure. I do find it odd that it seemed like there were more people who wanted the big prelude book than there were people who wanted the UXM line to continue numbered without the inclusion of New Mutants/X-Factor, etc, and yet the vol 5 was released instead. To me, it seemed like people collecting X-Men already had Mutant Massacre omnibus, Fall Of The Mutants OHC, etc. It wasn’t until the UXM vol 5 announcement I started to see some more people mentioning they didn’t care if the X-Factor material was included and that they only cared for the UXM issues. In the end, it just seems like an odd situation, to me. Hopefully, something like this won’t happen again.

    When you think about it, this was inevitable. The Omnibus line was always mildly infuriating with its focus on events and/or runs by specific creative teams. This always had the downside of creating gaps and orphaned issues and forced collectors to buy other lines if they wanted to plug the gaps and read everything.
    Personally, I prefer omnis that do series runs as complete as possible, with extraneous tie-ins.
    I get why people are mad, and yes, Marvel should have either included the X-Factor content or advised that this Massacre Prelude was forthcoming. Chalk it up to a mistake or corporate greed.
    At least they are telling you you can skip X-FACTOR vol. 1, if that is how you collect.
    I prefer having an Uncanny vol. 5 and X-FACTOR vol. 1, but from my perspective, I just wasted money buying Mutant Massacre and Fall of the Mutants when now I know that I could have waited for Uncanny vol. 6 and 7.

    It is ironically hilarious that this whole debacle is due to how forgiving the X-office was about these first crossovers; you could stick to just one book and be just fine, not needing to read all of the books to get the story. After the success of MM, FotM, and Inferno, X-Tinction Agenda introduced the Part 1, Part 2, etc. of events as we’re used to them.

    I think it would’ve been best for the community to break the news on Vol. 5 and MM prelude at the same time. Yes, it’d go against Marvel sales but still, there’s still so many options. They don’t have to reprint or print new X Omni’s in timeline order. It just felt so “last resort” after Vol. 5 was “broken”. Both books would be purchased and 1 would have better sales but come on. More than likely they would both be OOP easily. I see the two kind of similar to King in Black/Venom by Donny Cates.

    Even though you guys are projecting the various volumes that might come in the future (Road to Onslaught, Onslaught Aftermath and all that) overall it seems like things are moving really slowly and there's so much to catch up with and more being created all the time.
    At the rate things are going, it could be 20 more years before we're anywhere near having all of the original UXM issues (through # 544) in Omnibus, let alone everything else that ran alongside, and what about everything from after that? Going to be a looooooong slow ride.

    • @PeterMarinari
      @PeterMarinari 10 месяцев назад +4

      While it seems like it could be 20 years or more, I think things are going to accelerate rapidly once the X-Men hit the MCU.
      What are we waiting for to complete an omnibus collection of original UXM on our bookshelves? Road to Onslaught. Post-Onslaught. Kelly/Seagle. Magneto War. X-Corp. Austen. New Age by Claremont. Brubaker. Fraction (2 volumes?). Gillen. (Those last four could be broken up different ways or be more event-oriented, but those are the broad swaths).
      That's 10-11 books, and Marvel isn't shy about releasing multiple X-Men books a year. I think the thing that's making it feel slower than normal is that X-Men releases in the past 2-3yrs have been about getting a lot of the Claremont-era omnis back into print.

The question is, or perhaps comment…Bishop’s Crossing was the final X-Men OHC whale I wanted. For some reason, I could have bought it for a nice price in 2018 and passed. Then, it skyrocketed in price. I’ve been keeping an eye out for years. Then, all of a sudden, around Wed or Thurs, I noticed a bunch of reasonably priced copies on eBay and some even better priced ones on Amazon US. I jumped on that! So, what is the deal with that? The copy I bought a few minutes ago on Amazon was from a place that I have bought a ton of books from and it seems they have a bunch of them for sale at a nice price. Did they just find a stack of them laying around in their warehouse or is there something more to this? Again, sorry to bother you but I thought this was an interesting situation. Thanks!

    I also thought about how i would have mapped IT and i come Back to the 2 omni solution. In the past both would have included issues of UXM and XF. Now that we have UXM 5 as the UXM part i would make a prelude companion. For me massacre never was an UXM or XF Story, IT Always was a Morlocks Story.. so this companion would include all the morlocks issues before massacre starting with issue 169 of uncanny and also include Marvel Team Up 135 and Others. In Addition IT would have the beginning of XF.. this would double Dip with UXM 3-5 with a few issues each and with XF 1 with the beginning of XF. IT also wouldnt be this behemoth of an Omnibus.. a Lot of the now presented prelude omni doesnt have to do anything with massacre, contrary to my mapping

    So Here is my comment: Regardless of any explanation the facts still stand. UXM 5 IS still completely included in prelude. Marvel probably did prelude to give an extra solution, but its Not good for those, who already preordered and bought UXM 5. So people preordering are the losing Side. I know at least 5 better solutions. But with this Marvel lost me. I wont buy UXM 6 and forward and i wont buy prelude and i also wont buy XF 1 to 3. Thats Just my Personal conclusion and i will follow through with this. Anybody Else can come to a different conclusion, but i Just feel disrespected as a longtime buyer of Marvel. The best solutions now would have been a different Content for prelude or even Splitting Up prelude. And there we're definitely better solutions in the past, but this cant be Changed now.
