Very nice job. I just bought a 76 Thunderbird that I'm changing the interior color on but I'm just getting a new carpet, The carpet in mine is in good condition but with such a large carpet area it's going to cost me more to clean and dye it then is to just replace it with a new carpet. I'm still going to dye door panels, seats and trim though because that's definately cheaper than replacing them with new. I am going to revinyl the dash cover a and make a new package tray. it was originally Green and my seats are vinyl with fabric inserts and I'm going to 2 tone it, the fabric is going Cinnabar, which is Cinnamon color and the vinyl and plastic is going to a Beige color. The car is already white and I'm going to repaint it white but I'm taking the white vinyl top off and going to paint the roof something close to the Cinnamon color I get for the interior because... well why not.
Thank you 😁 That makes sense to me, sounds like a cool project your working on. I too went for new carpet on the next project my s10. The budget was higher, also after a year I had to touch up where my shoes always moved around on the floor by the peddle. The non touched parts are all like new. The rubbed bits under my sneakers faded a tiny bit after alittle over a year. As for cost 6 cans was half the price of the new carpet. For a cheap beater fix I would still clean and dye. For a long term keeper I would buy new. Live and learn 👍
@@thisoldhooptie Nice, I don;t really have "Budget" persay I just want to do stuff the most cost effective and simplest way possible, I'm not doing a 500 point restoration, I'm basically knocking the dirt and rust off it and building an above average daily driver that I can take to Cruise-ins and Cars and Coffees. I wasn't going to go with new carpet but my carpet is twice if not more than the S-10 carpet, I figured for 3 coats it was going to take 12-15 cans of dye to just do the carpet, just the dye is is $140ish, plus what I would pay in cleaning supplies I figured another $20 for that plus the water to clean it and the time invested just isn't worth it when I can get a new molded carpet for $180 including shipping, that's 10% more for something that's brand new and I don't have to worry about it again.
I agree with your points. I am not sure why I didn't put 2 and 2 together in my reply. I get so many replies on the chevy trucks I passed over the the fact that yours is a car and is larger. Sorry about that👍 😁
How many cans did it take you? I'm considering doing the same on my S10. Interior is three different colors and very dirty. Would love to have everything black. Did the fabric on the seats get stiff at all? I have some light gray Cavalier buckets and my center console is dark blue.
The seats get stiff but softened as they were rubbed and used. I dont remember the amount used. I think it was 12 or 14 for the whole thing plastics, seats, carpets. The carpet and seats took the most. It was still cheaper then new carpet. Since you have an s10 it will be less then the c1500 I did here. I would start with the carpet after a real good cleaning see if it's for you. My carpets, plastics, and seats still look as they did in these videos. I use the seats in my garage I got new ones with lumbar support and a console.
I put all pieces back after they dried. The smell was gone long before they were back in the truck. They probly had a fresh paint smell for a week. I left them drying in the sun, then my hot garage for another week.
Personal preference of the final sheen the fabric or plastic pieces will have. I shot some test pieces from a junk yard and selected the sheen I liked best.
Thanks, I am pretty sure I used almost a full 6 pack on the carpet. I ordered from Amazon link is in the description.you will need a couple more cans if doing the back wall carpet too. Its really all about the prep whatvever you choose to spray with. I like the duplicolor brand better. Try both on something see which you like better 👍
Yes all spray paint cans are flammable. The carpet alone is also flammable. You would need to check the carpet data sheet from the manufacturer along with the back of what ever fabric spray you use to have all the details.
Once you run your hand over them it softens up. Not as soft as before but not uncomfortable. Its not perfect but for the cost best you can do without buying new carpet or seats if you want black.
@@garyryan7852WR the carpet its great still nice a black a year later. The seats faded alittle but they were crap in my case. Lots of cigarette burns and worn fabric so the black hid all that. The carpet and back panel carpet yes I agree. That being said i wanted it black which you can see in the latest videos it goes with the theme. Have a look at my huge interior update video if you have not already. I have nothing against stock grey if its clean. The seats and door panels were bad they only look good on camera. Once you get close or sit in the seat or pull un the door panels to close or open the door it was bad. That was why I ordered the new coverlay ones. Un the end the truck will come out nice and its been fun screwing around in the garage with my kids. For me even doing things twice is worth the time spent. Just my two cents.
It was either 5 or 6. I think I mention it in the video. Make sure its really clean before you spray it. Takes the paint better. Still looks the same today as it did back then.
Thank you, good luck with your project. I had to drive to multiple auto parts stores for the first few cans. The amazon link in the description should still work i listed both a single can or 6 can pack.

I have used rit dye to make multi colored shirts 30 years ago. I washed those for years after, the rit dye i used was permenant. It can be messy but what isn't? I just looked it up, it seems it does fade over time. Guess I was lucky. The new version is better then the old as far as fading goes. But its not listed as a permanent dye. Learn something new every day.
Other then my fingers since we did the t-shirts outside not much of a mess. My experience was different, the t-shirts lasted years. You know the tiedye ones. According to what i just read it can fade . I dont think it washes off but if nothing enough is used maybe caused a problem. We let our stuff soak a long time that was key. I'm adding this so its all in one place: RIT DYE Rit dye, which is a multi-purpose union dye, is versatile, easy to use and nontoxic. You can dye natural fibers like cotton, linen, wool, silk and also rayon and nylon fabric. Cotton blends with polyester or spandex will dye lighter and less intense. There are many colors and you can easily mix them to get custom colors. The downside with Rit compared to fiber reactive dyes is the colors are less intense and not as colorfast. (That means it can fade or be removed) DYLON DYE Dylon permanent dye is a fiber reactive dye, meaning it reacts chemically with cellulose found in cotton, rayon and silk to create a permanent bond. It won’t fade and the colors will be more intense than rit dye.

I used 4 but needed a fifth later as it faded where I moved my feet around over time.
I used RIT synthetic dye and it worked very, very well in case anyone is considering doing the same.
That was my backup plan if the test piece didn't work out. Good stuff I did some floor mats once.
RIT fades fast and comes off with water. You’ll accidentally dye things you don’t want dyed

When it first dried i used an old t-shirt or towel and smoothed out the seats. After that no it never got on my clothes. The carpet never bled.
