*"games like overwatch are an audiovisual clusterfuck"* FINALLY someone with a platform says this. For fuck's sake. The visual clarity in TF2, and honestly, just a lot of older titles in general, is fantastic. That's all being thrown out the door recently in favor of either total lightshows and incoherent artstyles or "muh realism" where everything blends together in le epic realistic lighting.* *Realism can still be very visually clear, look at L4D, for example; its just that modern games with realistic artstyles don't care for things such as this and prefer to make things look as "real" as possible with any care for clarity
recently during the overwatch Halloween event they made one of the map's lighting into nighttime and they fucked the bloom so hard that all the glow that is normal for overwatch just made it almost impossible to see anything
Reminds me of the Halo series. Each team used to be a certain color which was a simple solution to visually show who’s friend and foe. Now it’s a colored outline only when you’re looking at someone. It’s a worse fix to a problem that was never there in the first place.
I never really cared that much about cosmetics not fitting into tf2 i thought "they look nice whatever" but i saw a video about scout weapons today and when i saw the design of the winger it clicked. The thing actually looks like almost like a toy gun that you could buy in the 60s, it really had that tf2 vibe to it it fit perfectly. Idk how some of these cosmetics fit in line with the fact thats its taking place in 68 (they dont). Also i would argue that the pyro one is *somewhat* reasonable, the biggest issue i think are the backpack and the helmet but the clothes are in-line with pyro wearing his fire protecting full-body suit. We should talk about that leather jacket item, why the hell would the pyro have a leather jacket?
I think the biggest problem is the helmet kills the iconic pyro mask look. Maybe instead of a racer, make him a pit crew member, and give him a hat with headgear over his gasmask.
"why the hell would the pyro have a leather jacket?" Because of a certain thematic of a cosmetic? Literally big majority of cosmetics don't fit in with lore taking place in 68, cus they're not related to the lore, except some like robot ones. Why does the Pyro have leather jacket? For the same reason Heavy has one, creators made biker themed cosmetics for them. What matters about cosmetic is whether it doesn't break style of the game, doesn't make impossible to know what character you're looking at, and whether it's shit or not.
@@retrobat1631 you missed my point.... Tl;dr because why not? Why do you want to limit cosmetics to just be "lore accurate"? That's not their purpose...
I can feel this. I've seen once an article that turned Pyro's gasmask onto a fucking fox with jigglebones that gave him facial expressions. That shit better NOT be added to the game.
Even when the bird heads are on the characters, like the Pootis Birb, they're still within the cosmetic range of the characters. Even with other stuff, you know that it's still tf2 Heavy, or Medic, or Sniper. Heavy will lay egg... IN YOUR M O U T H

A great example of this is the Luigi "set" you can make for Pyro. I'm pretty sure the only team-colored portion are the overalls, which aren't a part of his normal model and destroy class recognition as a result
I feel bad for Zesty and other TF2bers, having to look into the hell that is new items and pach notes. I love your work, and hopefully you find the time to also play this game off-camera or other games especially. When this is the statr of crates, you have it thr hardest.
i think that armor set doesn't look too bad, it just needs to add things that more adhere to the default silhouette of the demoman, adding things on his chest like the grenades that are normally there, maybe removing that hood, and make the helmet have protection over the left eye cause he's really not going to be seeing out of it anyways
adding onto the discussion of; ability to quickly distinguish a class. i've found myself able to even spot disguised spys from just their movement speed differences from a real scout. its amazing how much time and effort went in to perfecting these elements of the game, but how far we've strayed from them as well.
This fits more into an SFM workshop. It looks really nice, it could be used in medieval SFM stuff and such, but it definitely isn't for being an ingame TF2 cosmetic set.
I think things like the demoknight cosmetics could look good in some case of like, a special re-imagining of the tf2 characters as bundled in some massive medieval mode update, with cosmetics specific to the mode being released. It's not that these cosmetics have no value to TF2, I think they could wonderfully work given the right context, but that they will never be used in that right context. I mean, we're not getting another update, let alone one centered around medieval mode. The real problem is not the creation of this stuff, but that there are not decent standards in deciding what will be done with it.
I think it's weird that item sets like the Rocket Ranger for Soldier are Halloween restricted while so many item sets that straight up do not fit the art style aren't. Hell, that set actually fits the art style just fine. I think some items like the various cyberpunk jackets for Scout are fine, but when you deviate from it too much, the game just looks like a mess.
It’s not good enough to just be a well made and “fitting” cosmetics. It has to match each classes silhouette. It has to stick to their bodies so that you can still tell it’s them. Even if a lot of the items that got added are fugly, they haven’t totally overhauled the model of the classes. If that demoman set gets added, it would be the first big offender to the class model. We shouldn’t let that happen. We all agree that tf2s character are fundamental to the charm the game has. We love them for their distinct personalities and job descriptions. Cosmetics like these strip them of that personality. Of that soul.
Skins in Overwatch still represent the silhouette and keep a lot of the core identifying aspects of a character. The literal demo knight has no identifying factor that he is a Demo Man other than his black skinned hands and possibly his posture. This is bad.
A screenshot from another video of yours summed up the problem pretty well. These people in the workshop are not making items for tf2 because they like the game, they make items because they like money and they as artists wanna make want they wanna make, which means they should move on to something else rather than muddy our game with out of place cosmetics
For demoman, or more specifically demoknight, i feel like you could get away with cosmetics like the one you've shown if it restricted you to just playing demoknight. No grenades, no stickies, that would be the only way i could justify something that out of place being the way it is. the pyro cosmetics are a big no.
I think the item set mentioned is a perfect example of what you're trying to convey. Yes, Pyro looks "like a pyro," but why is he wearing a racing suit? Doesn't the set fit better on Scout? It reminds me of the Hazmat Headcase on Sniper.
You know, that demo set would be perfect for a misc game mode where you have to fight random assortment of enemies outside of our mercs. A mix between mann vs machine and player destruction. A horde of those chunky demo knights, maybe some giant heavies and gnome engineers.
Haven't finished the video, but I had the same thought as Zesty, though it was second for me. First thought: "Haha, that's a really funny looking cosmetic, but it doesn't really fit TF2". Second thought: "Who is this supposed to be, anyway?" Third thought: "Oh, he has black hands, it has to be Demo. Oh, right, Demoknight. I get it".
The biggest problem with these items or at least to me is that but because tf2 can get glitch some times like not properly rendering, having cosmetics lose all lighting turning them pitch black and or using the incorrect team color. I'll defend the lurkers leathers and say that is what an itemset should try to go for time terms of keeping the class still looking that the class and that because its more just a thin overlay over spy's suit but has all of his proportion and other stuff kept the same the only thing I like about the complete overhaul item sets is when someone is killed by a yer spy you'll see a pair of pants come flying out of nowhere
I would argue it does affect gameplay a little bit, part of what went into the character designs for this game was making the characters recognizable from a far distance, even the way the colors are blocked onto the characters was considered. That set for the demo completely breaks the palette placement, his body is now red and his arms are metallic, with the silhouette change too he looks almost more like a Heavy or a Soldier at first glance or from far away I'd imagine. It doesn't have many of the trademarks of a Demoman. The older knight set doesn't have this problem, as the armor mostly only covers his torso and is still a dark tone like his regular vest - that would make a decent cosmetic! I don't actually mind a lot of the smaller items people have said "break the game's style", especially when they're limited halloween items, but sets like this are definitely far, far too much, and I say that as an artist and character designer 🥴 Very cool and well-done cosmetics *out of context,* but not for something that should be in the game.
I agree on that demoman cosmetic, but I disagree with the pyro set. I can tell that's the pyro easily by the boots, gloves, mandatory back attire with the a cosmetic that completely covers the face, arms still has the pyro's class badge on it, and the jacket itself has pretty much the exact same dimensions as regular pyro. Nonetheless, I agree that it violates the Style a TF2 cosmetic should have, even though I can still easily tell that's a pyro in game.
I feel like with the Pyracer, you're only complaining about the full set making him look like a different character. Each item on its own is completely fine for the Pyro. The suit doesn't change much since he always wears baggy attire. The gas can backpack fits Pyro pretty well and the racing helmet would be fine on it's own. The Demo outfit on the other hand is really a bit too much.
I agree essentially. The pyro one is still kind of much but it's not out of line enough that I didn't recognize it was the pyro right away. The demo one, I actually thought it was for the pyro for a bit because I couldn't tell who it was for
This feels like a rant that should’ve been brought up 7+ years ago (and it definitely was brought up). Seems weird to start malding over a moot point now.
at first i thought it was a soldier set, but then i noticed the hands. i bet it'd be easier to tell it's demo if he was holding a weapon, but it still definitely obstructs the base model way too much
Honestly, that demo set isn't to bad, it even still fits seeing that pyro has a very similar set, the only problem is maybe the hood over the helmet shouldn't go down to the shoulders imo.
@@dkskcjfjswwwwwws413 I mean, his torso is made bulky with alot of cosmetics, and with a game that has all class helmets that fully cover the face, something that atleast shows the eyes is better than nothing. I will agree with the arms though, probably should have went with a chainmail look with gauntlets.
Dota 2 literally does this shit with "arcane" skins that completely change characters, even genderswapping in some cases. At least a top-down tactical MOBA can get away with this to some degree but it's not a good example to follow.
I was about to disagree, until about a minute into your explanation. Yeah, that is a sick looking demoman set, that's a sick pyro set, I really like them, but wow, they both completely change the design cues and visual style of the character. It's not just silhouettes either, certain parts of the character have completely different saturations and values, and that is a huge part of character recognition. That's part of why the Fast Learner is so widely hated. I do textures and materials for VRChat avatars, and that's essentially all I think about, how I can completely change the way a character looks by only affecting the colors, not the silhouette of the character.
i actually would really like to see a set like this, i mean the entire playerbase is aware of the demoknight subclass, so when they see this very detailed knight / vanguard going around their minds already default to demoknight. but then again, you will have those players and new players who would see the demoman, and then this detailed deomoknight set, and would question what class that is until they hear the voicelines or notice that pills are being shot. i dont know, maybe my brain is going "well its not another christmas tree or wizard hat" HOWEVER what i think looks great and yet maintains class sillouette is the Le Morne Uniforme
Pyracer is fine if engineer can get a 4th wall breaking Cosmetic than pyro can get a racing suit however i do agree it needs to be simplified some what im tried of seeing garbage meme cosmetics get in so ill vote for anything to make sure that doesn't happen
Honestly? Even though I don't like many of the items that were introduced into the game (mostly during Scream Fortress and Smissmas 2018-2020) I have to admit that I've got used to that "modern" TF2 community-driven artstyle and I kinda dig some of these items often considered as "cute" like Plumber's Cap, Balloonihoodie or All Hallows' Hatte (especially that they are higher grades, meaning technically there should be less of them and they are not seen as often). Either way the TF2 workshop undoubtedly should maintain SOME level of artstyle consistency because I swear to god if we get another Corpse Carrier...
I feel like as you said, (not sure if was your intentions) The concept itself is great, and more realistic medieval for demo? Awesome! Racing pyro? Great Just that the way was done, is quite confusing I would change is just the format of the cosmetic itself, demos still should have a recognisable shape And pyro is not that bad, but the shape of the helmet is kinda weird and I feel like overall, the suit could be improved The backpack is actually kinda weak, and weird, bit too big and doesn't feel like it fits the character Anyway most concepts can definitely fit with tf2 but the way people do go too over the top, and kinda changes the character too much
3:31 isnt there a helmet that covers completely demoman face snd give him horns? 5:51 i have this same complain about league of legends about skins that give a brand new look and animations to champions like lee sin anime with white hair It completely fucked my mind i couldnt tell wich fucking champion he was
You might be thinking of the Glasgow Great Helm, or Hood of Sorrows. Neither of which are Halloween restricted. Edit: Almost forgot about the Blast Defense.
In honesty the art style has already fallen apart and by valve themselves they already dipped their hands into that jar plenty of times, and especially when more involved with the community. Though to say the knight doesn't fit demo? Is rather wierd cause who else would have such cosmetic? Soldier? Possible but if you said to the community hey a new knight cosmetic was made it probably would ask if it was for demo. Frankly I also feel like a lot of stuff that can be done has been done, and it feels as of now of which I personally don't mind is that a lot of stuff may not fit the over all games theme, so it's just make something that looks cool of which I wouldn't mind then.
I agree with all your points, but valve already murdered the artstyle this is just the final nail in the coffin and at this point we might at well just go all in.
i'm sure this will be great for the item workshop. certainly no witch hunting will occur after this video. thank you, zesty jesus, for saving the tf2 item workshop.
I feel if it matches the player set and doesn't cover all of the patches with the character logo (pyro fire is an example) then it's fine...players can immediately tell what class it is so whatever Edit: also comparing pyro wearing a motorcycle helmet (which he has a million different head skins and helmets since they first added cosmetics for him) is NOT the same as Keanu reeves being shoved into the game...it's just not...honestly man it's a horrible comparison and while I see what you were trying to go with and I love some of your content it just doesn't make sense to me idk
8:57 it's tf2 . not crossover hell like fortnite . I grew up with tf2 aesthetics . i don't want it to look like modern games . if i want to play Apex . i will play apex . (I do play apex and i tell you 90% of skins are trash)
Exactly. They're fucking cosmetics in a video game. Valve has made maps that aren't based on the original design for YEARS. They've added things that go way back too!
Seems weird to start malding over a moot point now.
someone's gotta do it
the problem only continues to get worse, repeatedly bringing it up hopefully gets it to stop
The Demo in the beginning looks like some NPC in a high-quality medieval TF2 SFM Poster, but I completely agree this this is not Demoman
at first i thought it was a soldier set, but then i noticed the hands. i bet it'd be easier to tell it's demo if he was holding a weapon, but it still definitely obstructs the base model way too much
Honestly, that demo set isn't to bad, it even still fits seeing that pyro has a very similar set, the only problem is maybe the hood over the helmet shouldn't go down to the shoulders imo.
These are like hugbees videos for tf2
Desperate man uploads his fortnite skin to tf2 to get attention.
Dota 2 literally does this shit with "arcane" skins that completely change characters, even genderswapping in some cases. At least a top-down tactical MOBA can get away with this to some degree but it's not a good example to follow.
I like the Trucker hat.
Basically: cool as shit, but it just doesn't fit
I was about to disagree, until about a minute into your explanation. Yeah, that is a sick looking demoman set, that's a sick pyro set, I really like them, but wow, they both completely change the design cues and visual style of the character. It's not just silhouettes either, certain parts of the character have completely different saturations and values, and that is a huge part of character recognition. That's part of why the Fast Learner is so widely hated. I do textures and materials for VRChat avatars, and that's essentially all I think about, how I can completely change the way a character looks by only affecting the colors, not the silhouette of the character.
the pyro one looks fine has the logo on the arm only issue could be the helmet and that could easily fixed by just adding flames or his logo
i actually would really like to see a set like this, i mean the entire playerbase is aware of the demoknight subclass, so when they see this very detailed knight / vanguard going around their minds already default to demoknight.
but then again, you will have those players and new players who would see the demoman, and then this detailed deomoknight set, and would question what class that is until they hear the voicelines or notice that pills are being shot.
i dont know, maybe my brain is going "well its not another christmas tree or wizard hat"
HOWEVER what i think looks great and yet maintains class sillouette is the Le Morne Uniforme
Pyracer is fine if engineer can get a 4th wall breaking Cosmetic than pyro can get a racing suit however i do agree it needs to be simplified some what im tried of seeing garbage meme cosmetics get in so ill vote for anything to make sure that doesn't happen
Why am I watching this? I don't even wear any cosmetics
Zesty kinda right though.

Paladins skins and voice packs: *screaming*
this has been bothering since like 2016
Thank you for not shouting 24/7 during this and rather presenting a more stern tone instead to convey your negativity.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU CANT TELL ITS A DEMOMAN???? HES FRICKING BLACK!!!!
Id rather have these cosmetics than elf hat number 20.
you look like Jeb.
oh and great video, I wholeheartedly agree with you.
I feel like as you said,
(not sure if was your intentions)
The concept itself is great, and more realistic medieval for demo? Awesome! Racing pyro? Great
Just that the way was done, is quite confusing
I would change is just the format of the cosmetic itself, demos still should have a recognisable shape
And pyro is not that bad, but the shape of the helmet is kinda weird and I feel like overall, the suit could be improved
The backpack is actually kinda weak, and weird, bit too big and doesn't feel like it fits the character
Anyway most concepts can definitely fit with tf2 but the way people do go too over the top, and kinda changes the character too much
3:31 isnt there a helmet that covers completely demoman face snd give him horns?
5:51 i have this same complain about league of legends about skins that give a brand new look and animations to champions like lee sin anime with white hair
It completely fucked my mind i couldnt tell wich fucking champion he was
Pretty sure that helmet is Halloween restricted.
@@pcarrierorange uhhh i think im drunk or something but i remember a unusual covered helmet face or mercenary grade
You might be thinking of the Glasgow Great Helm, or Hood of Sorrows. Neither of which are Halloween restricted.
Edit: Almost forgot about the Blast Defense.
@@mr._2994 i saw asoldier with a knight hat that cover his whole face in unusual grade
thast a nice hat u got there tbh
His identity is gone, though. Knights fit demoman, but he still has to be demoman. That item set just looks like a new class altogether.
I agree with all your points, but valve already murdered the artstyle this is just the final nail in the coffin and at this point we might at well just go all in.
Low IQ take
@@CopeAndSeeth Indeed, good sir
This is where I’m at as well I would probably say. As long as the cosmetics actually look good I don’t mind them getting weird with it at this point
@@wahbucket501 I agree, we should just have fun with it

Most stupid thing I read today.
i'm sure this will be great for the item workshop. certainly no witch hunting will occur after this video. thank you, zesty jesus, for saving the tf2 item workshop.
They had their chance to stop making garbage, they deserve whatever happens going forward.
"Don't give out criticism! It'll surely mean harrasment towards the creators! And it's mean, too!"
Nice Asuka figures
Thank you for the video
make the workshop great again
I need a tf2 chivalry script now lol.
(Yes I know of Melee)
eh, nah, it’s not that bad .
I feel if it matches the player set and doesn't cover all of the patches with the character logo (pyro fire is an example) then it's fine...players can immediately tell what class it is so whatever
Edit: also comparing pyro wearing a motorcycle helmet (which he has a million different head skins and helmets since they first added cosmetics for him) is NOT the same as Keanu reeves being shoved into the game...it's just not...honestly man it's a horrible comparison and while I see what you were trying to go with and I love some of your content it just doesn't make sense to me idk
8:57 it's tf2 . not crossover hell like fortnite . I grew up with tf2 aesthetics . i don't want it to look like modern games . if i want to play Apex . i will play apex . (I do play apex and i tell you 90% of skins are trash)
Have you heard Ram Dass? 💛
I mean, im all for sniper having a waifu pillow, a gamer supps waifu cup jarate, and a maid outfit

HI ZESTIES!!!
yea grampa, keep crying for lost 2007
In the knight cosmetic one, I can somewhat see your argument. But the race pyro set is fine, shut up 🙄
this is what lack of tactile sensation from both women and grass does to a man 😂
you start caring about THIS
Exactly. They're fucking cosmetics in a video game. Valve has made maps that aren't based on the original design for YEARS. They've added things that go way back too! Yet somebody like Zesty wants everything to go back to the way things were in 2009. Heaven forbid we have some cosmetics that are just cool to wear.
