One good thing in the last few years is the emphasis on mental wellbeing. Just the other day we had an unfortunate call for the victim and we had 2 phone calls and 3 text messages from our CIS team. It’s a lot different than the “suck it up” years from when I started

Another great video Randy! That must be so hard for first responders. It's strange what brings back a forgotten memory.
I had an abusive childhood but I'd buried each incident. A few years ago, the memories started coming out. I call them lightbulb moments. Some would shake me to my core. I'm learning to deal with them. The most helpful tool is being around others who believe and support me.

This deals with the concept of the various types of conditioning mentioned in Psychology class back in my day nearly 30 years ago. I can relate to everything you mentioned Constable but I'll be damned if I go somewhere and have a case of "the feels". Let's be honest here: how many of us have NEVER endured that feeling when you are somewhere and you get those feelings despite the fact the scenario occurred many years ago. It's always a good idea to ask any police officers if they have any feelings about this one area they are going to make an arrest to see if they have any ill will. We don't want to have on our hands an officer who has some negative reaction the moment they get to that area and not doing what they can't do for the conditioning in their part of their lives prevent them from doing their job. There are some areas in my life I would look back and say "Never again". Better yet, I may pass by some place and triggers a memory that is not so good at all to me. It is what it is.

Its true, somethings and some places will bring your right back! It could be happy, but also bring on a level of anxiety . It depands on what and where it is for sure. Like there is this certain Christmas cookie that my friends' mom would make and I last smelled and tasted it when I was about 14. Fast forward 40 years and a coworker brought in his moms' Christmas cookies. Randy it took me back 40 years....that smell, then the tatse...it was the same, and it tasted liked Christmas. Just like if you were involved in a MVC in a certain area, under certain circumstances, it comes back to you and you are on high alert because you remember.. I cannot imagine the triggers that first responders have. It really take a special individual to do that job.

I can relate to some of your I guess call them triggers. Both my husband and myself have lost both our parents but also many others whom impacted our lives in many ways. The simplest phase or like you mentioned the sound of a vehicle or a song. Most are not Joy most are spontaneous tears. I have also been unfortunately been in a few vehicle accidents and driving by a spot of an incident or just watching some else having a similar situation has brought back a memory of my incident. Sorry to ramble but I appreciate your honesty and relating your situation makes you more I hate to say human other than a cop.

People have laughed at me in the past when i tell them that i have a sixth sense,.. I get premonitions from time to time and I learned how to interpret them, I won't get into details, but trust me when I say, they have been warning signs and have helped me avoid some really serious situations... always listen to your instincts, as the old saying goes, if something doesn't feel right, it probably isn't.

Very interesting. I have PTSD. Diagnosed by CAMH. Border line personality disorder as well. 10 years with an ABUSER. It's been 2.5 years since the break down of the relationship. I really suppressed my memories and was prescribed better meds. But now I have to face him in court on May 30. It's family law now. He beat the criminal charges. All 6. Not looking forward to seeing him on Thursday.😢 but I get what you mean about places and memories.

I remember living close to dufferin and eglinton west. Never going to forget the worst crash i have ever seen. A couple died. I saw the crash, the mothers and families coming over to look a the bodies and i assume identify them. The screams of the mothers when the saw the bodies. All of it like it was yesterday. That is something that has stayed with me my whole life. True it shocked me to the core.

It's true as I used to work Ambulance in small town Sask back in the early 1990's and I was 19 years old. There is one intersection that I have to go by every time that I go back to the family farm and every time I remember one call that ended up with tragic results for one family. That one really stands out for me and I can remember everything about that day even though it was so long ago. We never had debriefings or help back in those days, we managed but it was what it was as we did our best to help people and you soon learned that not everybody lives and we had to be good with that. The brain is a powerful thing, it can destroy you if you let it.

Yes. Good and bad memories. Smells like wood burning and geese honking are some of my favourite childhood and seasonal autumn senses. So grateful for those. It’s the bad memories that are tricky! Def places can be triggering. Parkdale in Toronto where I work was harder for me initially because of experiences there when I was in my twenties but now it’s my second home. So it’s possible to have new better memories associated with places. Somewhat related but spoke to a therapist once about PTSD in teens and how it can manifest in risky or self-destructive and dangerous ways. Something to think about when we think about youth behaviour. It’s really hard when we lose touch with our instincts-impacts our decisions.
A good topic would be first responders and therapy and stigma perhaps 🤷🏻‍♀️ or maybe you did that already. Anyway interesting.

I have a story Note to self .. I never had a fear of flying until we went to New York with our two young boys .. My oldest was age 1 and my oldest age 8 .. On the way back from New York our plane landing gear won’t go down and our pilot went on the intercom and said we are circling again to see if our landing gear will go down .. Half hour later our plane still up in the air I guess the pilot was slowly draining the fuel just in case we land with we have empty fuel and we won’t explode etc etc I didn’t this .. Well my husband knew .. and didn’t tell me that the reason we were still up longer was because the pilot was emptying our fuel .. my husband started freaking talking so loud saying we are going to DIE! So I started panicking .. I was telling my husband this fine don’t say too loud we are going to die the kids will get disturb .. I never prayed in life until that day .. I pray OMG .. I felt at peace and after I prayed the pilot went on the intercom we are ready to land the landing gear went down .. the tower said he can see the landing gear so we landed safe .. but I got traumatized I never flew again.. I don’t want to go inside a plane OmG !
