    What YOU need is a MUSTANG! At least, that’s what the window sticker proclaimed on this 1970 Ford Mustang BOSS 302. And for good reason… a Competition yellow thrill ride like this one can do wonders for whatever problems you might be facing!
    That soothsaying sticker goes on to define the variety of Mustang models available for 1970, including the Mach 1 for those on-the-go, the notchback Grande - for “those who’ve already arrived”, and the low-price Hardtop. But this one falls into what they called the “Action Models” - the BOSS series.
    Available in the standard production BOSS 302 and limited run BOSS 429, this BOSS 302 is still one of only 7013 built for ‘70, and it’s jammed with parts to brighten your day.
    The internet is riddled with stories of the name, be it a nickname given by designed Larry Shinoda to his boss Bunkie Knudsen, or how the term Boss meant bad-to-the-bone back in ‘70… the fact remains that the BOSS 302 was built to legalize Ford’s Mustang entries into Trans Am racing. Road-racing Trans Am cars not only had to resemble regular production models, but they had to have a similarly-equipped baby brother for sale at local car dealers for sale to the public. Chevy had the Z/28, Plymouth the AAR ‘Cuda, and Mustang fans got to emulate their racing hero's in the BOSS 302.
    BOSS 302s were legit, too.. starting with the thin-wall, 4-bolt main block cast from stronger steel and equipped with screw-in freeze plugs for added rigidity. The displacement was 302 cubic inches to fit the Trans Am rules, but it was topped with canted, large-valve Cleveland style cylinder heads making 10.5:1 compression and an advertised 290 HP and 290 pound-feet of torque. It was designed to tach up, with a special balancer and pulleys designed to keep belts happy at high RPMs. Beefed up rod bolts and a solid lifter cam help it spin. A stiff-clutched 4-speed gears up the driveline for action.
    But the BOSS is more than an engine, the rest of the car is road-race inspired as well. Quick ratio power steering puts the competition suspension to the test, but it fights back with an oversized sway bar, lowered stance, and specially tuned shock absorbers. Power front disc brakes drag down the 15” chrome Magnum 500 wheels and F/60-15 belted tires, and a Detroit locker rear differential lights ‘em back up when the hammer goes down.
    The look is speedy, too, with a shaker hood scoop poking up through the cool flat black BOSS stripe design, which flows down the fenders to the back of the car. A functional front lower spoiler keeps the air from lifting the nose at speed. The driver is shaded by Sport Slats in the rear window, and a black rear spoiler backhands the air as the BOSS slips by.
    Hi-back bucket seats, full instrumentation, and color-keyed carpet are part of the BOSS package. This one has an up-charged AM radio and tinted glass as well.
    These are cool cars for sure, and this one is in amazing shape, but still having just over 64,000 miles under its belt. It’s certainly one of the brightest cars in The Brothers Collection!

    In 1981 I was a high school junior and bought my second car from a shady fellow student, a (stolen, which I was unaware of) 1970 boss 302 for $850. In good shape inside and out, it cranked but wouldn't start. Towed it home replaced a bad distributor cap then enjoyed one of the three happiest moments of my life as I grabbed rubber in all 4 gears (3.91 rear gear with skinny tires). Florida DMV didn't notice the title was a Ford Maverick and registered it. The ridiculously inadequate FL insurance minimum requirements let me "insure" it for $120/year! Had to sell it after a year and 4 months to pay for all my tickets and lawyer fees. But what a year! That 7000 RPM redline with solid lifters! A unique and beautiful sound

    Thanks so much for presenting this Mustang, one of the favorites of my childhood. In '70, my Dad was one of two engine builders at Bud Moore Engineering in Spartanburg, South Carolina. And the year before, he built engines at Gene White Firestone in Atlanta, with Pete Hamilton driving a Camaro. And who'd have thunk that all these decades later, the cars of that era would remain our all-time favorites, if only in our dreams, as their values skyrocket.

      @@markw208 Thanks, it was cool to see it all as a kid, a racer's kid for a couple of years. And in the '90s, because my Dad--who is still traveling and living large--kept in touch with Mr. Moore, I had the opportunity to sign in with the team when they ran NASCAR races here in the North. I had a crew member's license and I enjoyed those race day experiences. And the '94 Bud Moore Thunderbird in the Motorcraft livery was a very bad boy, even featured a year or so ago in Road and Track magazine.

    • @robbchastain3036
      @robbchastain3036 5 лет назад +1

      @@markw208 I thought about you today because as I was riding my bike--a road bicycle--on Rt. 16 in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, I was overtaken by a bunch of Harleys on a summer run and then by a '70 Boss Mustang, yellow-and-black like the one featured in this video. There is a lot to see on the roads of Central Pennsylvania and I do admire the classic cars and motorcycles--even the beat-up ones like a local '69 Torino with mags and dents and it looks like it is running three laps down at Riverside. Big fun. And I do have to say good for you, Mark, that back in the day, you actually did it, you bought a Boss Mustang. And sure, maybe it wasn't the best one, but you made it happen and you didn't just talk about it. And I did the same thing with motocross motorcycles--I never had the time or money to race 'em, but I bought three of them and, arg, had to part with them for one reason or another. And my first one, well, I never actually rode it after I bought it from a high school friend in Germany for $200 in '76. It was a '73 Maico 250 and it ran like wildfire when I tested it, but by the time I got it, he had blown the engine and I couldn't get it running so it languished in the basement of an apartment building and I kept riding my bicycles--happily--until I got a couple of 125 Elsinores in Canton, Ohio in '78, not to mention a daily driver '69 Impala for $150. O my, all the cool stuff back then. And it was cool to see the big-time racing scene up close and in person as a kid, and I just had the sense to appreciate it at the time--and to participate as I could by reading magazines and building model cars and always riding my Schwinn Sting-Ray like I was racing at Watkins Glen or Riverside or Le Mans or Baja. And it was pretend and it was real and it was fun, and I even won a handful of bike races and model car contests--and in the Auto World Car Model Catalog, the August '74 edition I think it was, one of my cars was like the Model of the Month or something. It was a dragster with a scratch-built brass frame and a fiberglass body, and Auto World sent me a huge box with ten kits or so as my prize--and, well, when you're a kid, that's a big prize, it was epic and I still appreciate it. And we were living back in California in '74--we had returned at the close of the '70 Trans-Am season and my Dad never did anything more with auto mechanics but he did work with the Pettys when they ran Riverside and Ontario from '71 to '74. And then we moved to Frankfurt, West Germany and my Dad got into old BMW motorcycles and I rode my bikes and it was quite a ride to be an American teen in Europe in the middle of the Seventies. And my little thumbnail is of me doing my Evel Knievel thing on my Sting-Ray in Frankfurt in early '75. And sometimes, German kids would come over from their apartment complex and I'd go over to theirs. And it was all about showing off and talking about racing and standing on the gas. All the fun stuff way back when and, again, I commend you, Mark, for getting behind the wheel of your Boss 302 Mustang back then.

    The CobraJet (and Super CobraJet) was a 428 in 69 and 70 and not a "CobraJet 429" as mentioned.
    In 69 and 70 you could get a 200 or 250 I6, or 302, 351, 390, 428 CJ or SCJ or a Boss 302 or Boss 429. But not a 429 CJ
    The 429 CJ and SCJ was fitted to the Mustang when the larger model arrived in 71. But was soon dropped due to the energy crisis and emissions concerns of the early 70's. A 351 CJ was also offered during the 71 to 73 model run.

    Had the same car with the same paint theme, only it came with the 351 Cleveland. Didn't have front disc brakes, so stopping was fun. When I bought it, it had a 351 W out of a 69 Mustang. I loved that car until the tail shaft bearing went out in the transmission, and I had orders to Germany, so I had to sell the car. I did have tears in my eyes when it left my Dad's driveway. It was seen at the Houston Drag strip, but I never went there, afraid people would see a 50 something man cry if that car was on the track. Thanks for the history lesson, and the very fond memory.
