A Scenic Autumn Sleeper Ride: Amtrak Cardinal 51 from New York to Chicago in Roomette

- On November 3rd, 2023, I embarked on a wonderful trip on the Cardinal train westbound to Chicago in my own roomette. There was plenty of views, lots of leaf peeping to be had, and some of that Amtrak charm during my trip. Follow me along on my fantastic ride!
I'm riding the Cardinal at the beginning of April, I'm so excited!
I'll be riding it end of April this year.
I'll be taking the same train this August. I can't wait!
I’m going in early June and I’m super excited too. First time traveling Amtrak by myself and first time taking a train since I was nine.
Looks like the Cardinal now has the full viewliner ii sleeping car.
pretty sure all of the Long distance routes out of New York have them at this point, or a mixture of the I's and II's

I’ve yet to take the train on the east coast but the stops in New York and Philadelphia remind me of subway stops here in Chicago.

I enjoyed your scenic route that you took Amtrak cardinal go to pass my house at 1:30 2:00 in the morning I wonder when they're ever going to fix that wheel I hear that going to click it and clickety click when it passes my house.

The cardinal hasn't had a full service dining car since the early to mid 2000s.
You should've taken your shower at metropolitan lounge in NYP or at Chicago Union Station because they have much better facilities for showers. Other than that, Cardinal is beautiful route with passing New River Gorge Bridge and other small towns along the way.
I agree with the shower at the Chicago lounge.

I liked viewing your trip. i know of the Cardinal and know it should be colorful in Fall. My wife and kids plenty of road trips and remember using interstate 64 and the West Virginia toll road through Charlottesville Viriginia to Williamsburg and Virginia Beach. Eventually made it to Washington. Always helps to have a sunny day for the scenery. Years ago i had fun riding AMTRAK and did five weekend to weekend trips to ride practically all the rail used by AMTRAK west of St. Louis (connectionS in Kansas City and Chicago at times for them). Very relaxing. Looks like you had a good time. .

Great video! We both eat the same breakfast and lunch aboard the Cardinal when I can get it. I prefer this train to a Superliner.
One day Traditional Dining will come back to the Cardinal instead of the limited microwave Flexible Dining menu.

just get $1 flip flops for shower. I learned this tip 10 years ago for my annual sleeper Chicago to Tucson.
It's too bad you ended up missing some of West Virginia's best scenery, due to darkness. You would have been traveling through the New River Gorge at this time, and the train stations in Prince and Thurmond are close to where I live.
Bro... at 17:53 in your video, it's probably farmer beehives. Yea your right about Culpepper has national cemetery... but your vid as you say it, at 17:53... looks like just farmer beehives for their crops.
Did you like the jointed rail section starting before Charlottesville, VA to Clifton Forge, VA?
So you are traveling sleeper in Chicago Union Station there is a Shower's at the Metropolitan Lounge
Trickle of water and hair in the shower drain…meal menus by telephone….not good, and the Cardinal only runs three days a week. C’mon Amtrak you can do better.
Well, at least you got your roomette with a view Amtrak promised. You paid buco bucks for your ticket showing you'd have access to the dining car, and a hot shower. You got neither! Amtrak can take your money then just casually say no dining car? What a rip👎! You need to get compensated for not getting what your reservation clearly stated you'd get. People would think twice if ticket had in small print that there's a chance no dining car, and oh, no hot water!
I was trying to watch your video, but the camera jerking around was getting me dizzy. You need to seriously invest in stabilizers for your equipment. I have watch numerous others that do train reviews and theirs is easy to watch with smooth motions.
