  • Many of us are familiar with the 3x3 Rubik’s cube, but how much do we know about the various other cubing events? 12-year-old Beth Lee's expertise lies in Megaminx, a 12-sided puzzle boasting 50 movable components-quite a leap from the Rubik's Cube, which features only 20. Getting good at this puzzle is all about being quick and handling the tricky finger movements. Beth is one of the few children and girls competing in the 12-sided cubing event. She wants to break the world record. Can she do it?
On the other hand, 10-year-old Luis Tan has honed his skills in an event akin to sitting for an examination. Picture this scenario: you step into a room and are handed a sheet with a scrambled cube image. Your task is to solve it in the fewest number of moves. Despite starting this sport only a year ago, 10-year-old Luis Tan has already secured the 2nd position in Singapore's rankings. His dream is to clinch the title of world record champion. What must he overcome to realise this ambitious goal?

Thinking 1 step ahead in cubing is usually easy, but for a megaminx? Tracking very specific pieces on a cube this magnitude and permuting them in rapid succession with no pauses is incredibly impressive. Her turn speed is insane.

As someone who can solve a Megaminx in a bit over 2 minutes, I think that someone who is almost 2 years younger than me that can solve it in 35 seconds is just IMPRESSIVE

@@TriXtreme1995I’m also a senior cuber lol. I got a 1:04 single today! I’ve been cubing for many years and gonna nerd out on some stats. Yu Da-Hyun from Korea is a hall of famer in my book as she broke 7 WRs and 8 CRs in megaminx. I think she would’ve broken many more had there been more opportunities to compete. I started around the same time and years could go by between opportunities. She was very dominant if I recall correctly and basically in a league of her own until Juan came around to make it a proper rivalry. I think she is owed a lot of credit for inspiring women to break records and succeed at megaminx. Her 32.03 avg is still a female WR and the longest standing.

@@NoahS4226 Good luck! I’m predicting a lot of prs in 2024! I also got a 1:04 megaminx single, first sub-40 4x4 single, pyraminx single 2.35, and 5x5 and megaminx averages this year already. And I got a bunch in the last couple months too. I’m an older cuber and had a very long lull of records so they haven’t come often for me. Beth is honestly very accomplished. I recognise her because I knew her from my primary school. Of course I thought that my brain was messed up at first but then I looked at her primary school photos and instantly recognised her. She’s really responsible, probably why she was prefect in our Primary School. She is also extremely good at cubing and also very resilient. I think she probably got into an outstanding secondary school but I don’t really know because I don’t have her number. I think she’s going to achieve a lot more in the future too. Wishing you the best Beth!

    Very well made documentary!
I think what's most amazing to me is that though both of these youngsters are easily world-class in both these events, they're world-class in events that are usually only seriously done by veteran cubers. I'm especially astounded by the fact that a 10 year old 's best event is FMC, which is probably the least appealing event to young children (the average age of a world-class FMC solver is at least 25).
