- A playthrough of Hudson's 1994 Super NES Disney-movie based platformer, Beauty and the Beast.
It's a lot like the NES version, but with some pretty amazing detail in the graphics, a really well-done soundtrack, and the most horrendously spiteful gameplay mechanics you're ever likely to encounter. If this was full of blood, army guys, and Nazis I would understand - then the game would obviously be intended for teens/adults.
Seriously, though - what were they thinking? Imagine being six or seven and receiving this for Christmas, only go get one of the most frustratingly difficult games on the SNES. You'd be part of the perfect target demographic - except that you'd probably not stand a chance at getting beyond the first stage. I love the presentation here, and I forced myself to get through it because I wasn't going to let, of all games, Beauty & the Beast get the best of me, but man. Unless you're looking for a game that makes Contra III look like a cakewalk, you're better off using a Game Genie. Or avoiding it all together.

Disney games to SNES are probably the most beautiful ones. They really know how to maximize quality.
They weren't better than Sega cuz those games were heavily contributed through the works of Disney themselves and the motions in those versions were almost captured straight from the films themselves
I have this interesting scary theory about the enchanted objects that are attacking the beast. For those that still remain loyal to him, there are others that have been driven to madness by the long enchantment and have now turned against the master to make him pay for their cursed forms.

@@manlymcstud8588 The prince himself was only about 12 years old when the enchantress turned him into into a beast the original story. She really is a psycho.
@@edselgreaves6503 chip is a child, so is he aging mentally and emotionally? what the hell did the dog do?! is that carriage alive, did the witch give it sentience? the enchantress acts as if all these people and animals are war criminals instead of just working for a jerk.
@@manlymcstud8588 He wasn't even a jerk, he just didn't want to let a stranger into his house. Anyone who listened to their dead parents advice would have told the enchantress no. The prince was barely even a teenager and was recently an orphan. But of course she has zero empathy for what he's going through.

I ended up buying a every game that was made for the SNES so I was able to complete all of them. now I don’t recommend buying all the games as it’s a waste of money but it’s still cool to be able to say that I own all of them

The platforming levels were DEF too hard early on (esp for the 5 yo me as well).
The difficulty scale should've been the post-forest castle middle, final third, and THEN the forest third.
Learning that you had use some of the creatures as platforms for perfectly TIMED screams = rage quit

I always wanted to like this game - it looks and sounds amazing and it controls well once you get used to it.
And it's utterly ruined by its insane difficulty level. It's a Disney game - WTF?

+ShelltoonTV1 Ahaha oh dear God. I vaguely recall renting it back in the day... and my memory seems to agree with you! Iirc, wasn't it the 'boy' game meant to pair with the Belle version for girls? I seem to remember that one had the opposite problem of being way too easy.
NintendoComplete Yeah, Belle's Quest was made insanely easy, but Roar of the Beast was developed by Sunsoft's 16-bit era masochists.
Most Disney games were insanely hard back in the day, just look at Mickey mania, toy story, or the lion king.
I agree. As a kid, I also thought this game looked and sounded great, but the ridiculous difficulty level ruined it for me. Not even The Lion King on SNES was as hard as this.
This, Pocahontas, and Toy Story should’ve been bundled with Aladdin and the Lion King, and available on the Nintendo Switch.
Man, I've never heard about this game before! How!? And it looks really cool! The visuals kinda remind of Castlevania. So interesting. And the soundtrack is great at emulating the movie tracks

Mixed feelings about a sixteen-bit synth "The Mob Song" playing over "Beast is having an unusually hard time in the castle for no reason".

Then -- in a part of the story where something that ominous might be more suitable -- you get that more downbeat version of "Gaston!" --
... Reminds me of something I'd hear in _Quest for Glory_ or something.
... One of the later recuts of "The Mob Song", some of these graphics at the end, the transformation that goes by... feels familiar.

How I managed to beat this game when I was 8 without cheating I'll never know - I must be a fan of self-torture. The mechanics, as you mention, are so SPITEFUL lol Like you, it was pride - I wasn't going to let BEAUTY AND THE BEAST get the "beast" of me :P
kids were smarter back then, over time we got spoiled with saving games

I actually play this game a lot when i was a kid, I actually never complain about the controls.
Well in that time i didn't know what was good controls in the gameplay xD.
Finishing this game is one of my proudest gaming achievements. It’s right up there with The Lion King. ^^
From the first cutscene which is so nostalgic, to that rising spike pit in the *second level* , to the purple curtains (purple drapes, eeeee!), to whatever that pterodactyl thing was, to the snowball level that was harder than what it should have been, and then when I died on the final part because I jumped down into the wrong part of the pit and missed the rooftop where Belle was … yes, that actually happened.
Also, my game cartridge had a green chip instead of the standard colour. To this day I’ve never known why . . .

Game looks difficult and just ok. Angela Landsberry sound bites would've added a lot. Congrats on the run, though. You've must've played this a bunch to get that good.
The premise of this game is kinda creepy - you're basically chasing down Belle the whole time.
It's cool-it's like you get to play as the boss the whole time.

@@BIGNOSEPOPPA the interesting thing was there were 2 different versions of Aladdin… the Aladdin game for Sega Genesis was developed by Virgin games USA… the game for Super Nintendo was developed by Capcom. So they were 2 completely different games. I liked the Sega Genesis version better by Virgin personally… you got to use a sword for your weapon in that game unlike the SNES version

Thats how i found this video. After spending 10 mins trying to figure out how to get past the first jump, i gave up and searched it assuming he had reviewed it. Turns out you can pick up the bolder somehow but iv had enough.

No matter how well this was done for a standard snes game, but it simply just doesn’t have the same feel as the film.
To me it feels more like a fanatic version of beauty and the beast.
Fun fact: Stomping (jumping from a height and pressing down as you fall to the ground) certains areas of a level can yield hidden items.
Edit: Changed "ground-pounding" to "stomping".

This was one of the best Nintendo games at least this was better than Beauty and the Beast in Wolf Among Us
I just finished it and I loved it! It has gorgeous graphics and the soundtrack is amazing, the controls are a bit clumsy at first but overall a great game :-)
Disney made some good Snes games. It’s a shame they didn’t make more. Peter Pan, Little Mermaid and Mulan would’ve made good additions.
Little mermaid is on NES pretty good game
schlauchi of World of long plays is one of the few players who could beat it without hits (it cost him a single life in the jungle part when he unsuccessfully jumps to the high ground)

totally just beat it. damn! I was expecting worse! I guess playing rolling thunder for a week whipped me into shape. fun game. you can max out your lives easily on the bookshelf levels. bosses are easy.

I know this vid's old, but still... I'd like to say my piece.
After seeing one individual [I'm not at liberty at saying who he is this time out of fear of namedropping] attempt the first level, and my my attempts to clear that first stage... Hudson and Probe [I guess?], this is one of your worst misses yet!
And this came out in a time where there were much better platformers such as Donkey Kong Country, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 [Plus Sonic & Knuckles], Mega Man X, and Earthworm Jim.
I can't wrap my head around as to why people can mess up the Beauty and the Beast license so much.
This game, first of all... No. Just, just no.
I've seen gameplay footage of the Genesis titles... Even if one's ridiculously hard, and the other's pathetically easy, they don't catch my fancy in the slightest.
And then there's Beauty and the Beast: A Board Game Adventure for GBC, a Mario Party-esque game - From what I've seen from a LP of that game... The story mode's die rolls seem to be loaded against your favor!
I'll bet when I get around to playing Kingdom Hearts II in whatever shape or form, it'll definitely feel more at home for me.
This is far easier than Segas Roar of the Beast, although that level with candles is very irritating

My siblings and I could never get past the snowball catching level as children. The final boss seemed easier to overcome than that level. Glad to see how it ended.
No one is a easy final boss like Gaston.

Not this particular game, but the Genesis has two Beauty and the Beast games. One is called Belle's Quest and the other is Roar of the Beast.
This actually looks cool and wicked for a game based on a chick flick, it's got a dark vibe going on. This game should of been re-released alongside aladdin and the lion king in that disney collection. It would of made more sense to include beauty and beast in that collection instead of the jungle book since those 3 movies were from the same era of the disney Renaissance
"Chick flick"? Beauty and the Beast is a good movie all around. It was nominated for an Oscar for a reason.

This game sucks dude. Because of jumping in order to move is the momentum but the books and bats were terrible, super fast run careless to hit by an enemy, and teetering but it executes terribly. So I chose the Sega Genesis version of Beauty and the beast (two games like belle's quest and roar of the beast) so you have watch the Console Wars to prove me I'm right.
Yeah. I've seen that episode. While both games have their flaws, the Sega version is better.

According to Console Wars, yes you can. You have to catch the snowballs.That was one of their biggest complaints of the game other than the jumping. That level should've been a bonus level.
