Healthier eating is always the harder challenge for me. It feels like you have to vigilant all day. It helps when I workout in the morning as I don't want to undo the hardwork but eating junk during the day.

I use to try to force diet, eating things I didn't like and always failed. So what I started doing was portion control with foods I enjoy. I enjoy working out so that part comes easy. But once I became more mindful of what I was eating and saw results it has become easier. I see and feel the difference so I know it's working for me.

Discipline requires both! I can’t lose a pound unless I do both, my body doesn’t feel good unless I workout!

“You can’t out crunch a shit diet” - Ryan Humiston. My own view is a healthier lifestyle benefits meaningfully from the combination of both, but probably 70% diet / 30% exercise.

I’ve hit this, this week in fact. Info overload, I’ve got confused, I’m still learning and I’ve had a self destructive week. No exercise and eaten rubbish 🤯 now I’m annoyed with myself!! So Monday back on it. Less info intake. I’ve dropped my rowing on the concept 2, need to get back on it too. I would like to tone up, get stronger and definitely get rid of the bingo wings 🤣 I cycle and run (plodding) too. Thank you 🙌🏻

While both are important, nutrition is far more
important. A person who eats a high protein, plant
based diet, and avoids processed foods and sugar, minimizes alcohol consumption, and doesn’t smoke, will usually be much healthier than a person who works out 3-4 hours a day but doesn’t eat clean. Although I would argue it would be difficult to workout that many hours if you didn’t eat healthy

Excellent advise as always! After my 100 pound weight loss and eating the “right stuff” I was plagued with high blood pressure and constant aches and pains. Adding exercise to my life was incredibly difficult, but it’s become a part of who I am and what I do. I physically feel so much better. Having the exercise and healthy eating has provided an excellent foundation for my mind that I never could have thought possible. -Chris

Living alone and doing my own shopping and cooking has brought about a big change in my food habits. For some reason, most of the time at the grocery store I can say NO to the unhealthy stuff I really love and crave when it's after 9pm... And I curse myself for that when I'm having cravings, but it is a blessing. I try to have at least one meal where I have it as mindfully as possible (like not watch RUclips videos while I eat so I can have some 'company' while I eat). I tend to meditate more when I'm doing things that don't require all of my attention. Washing dishes, taking a shower, having lunch or dinner, etc. So I do combine all three but I don't give it a lot of thought (no pun intended there). I usually have two meals a day - lunch and dinner, and try my best to make sure I have lunch before doing any fitness activity but that's more to do with my glucose levels than fueling up. Veggies? Oh definitely and meat. I like both - usually together! I'm not perfect at all these things but I do try to keep that trinity as part of my daily life.

If you think doing three to four rowing workouts a week is too little to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.

I try to use nutrition to control weight and exercise to feel better and expand my physical capabilities (strength, endurance, flexibility, etc.) Moderation in all things as you mention seems to be a solid path. Thanks for the channel!

My perspective is so skewed having had a severe eating disorder coupled w/exercise compulsion. I used to only eat 2 days out of 7 and I worked out at least 2 hours a day. I’m eating every day now, at least 1 meal although I try for more. In recovery we’re taught that food is food. Hard to apply that logic for hard core people. 😊 I’m learning balance is key. Control isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

To compare to a car, if you put bad fuel in the car it will likely look ok on the outside but over time it’s going to rot from the inside, and the same happens to us with a bad diet, except it’s not so easy to swap out the damaged parts. Regardless of whether people eat meat or not, I’m sure it’s avoiding highly processed foods is where people should start. You can make a lot of healthy meals in under 20 minutes

Good Video. It's doing it consistently like anything else that's key. And on top of that, how you deal with Life's curveballs that derail the consistency. I keep it going (mind, body, nutrition) for a block of 4-6 months, achieve something, then fall off the wagon. I lose the "why"...

The tough thing for me seems to be keeping my mind right. I lose the balance when I let work and problems intrude on my plan for health. I seem to allow frustration, dissatisfaction, stress to push me out of what I know I should be doing.

I go back and forth between emphases because my priorities change. I enjoy trail running the most, with occasional races. But when my achillies flared up, I had to evolve to cross training, which meant dialing up the indoor rowing! And dropping a few pounds of fat, because my lower legs need less pounding. Shane and Dark Horse have helped me get back in the saddle. Oops, I mean back on the Concept2! Now, I only find myself 5 kilos away from qualifying as a lightweight. Who knows what the future holds? Hopefully it will be fun.

Very similar. Hit lifetime 10k pr on the road this summer. Injured properly for running but back to default rehab, the rower and loving it. 3kg off lightweight but the 3kg that never shifts, even when marathon fit. Need to break the cycle..

I have been on a whole food plant based diet for around 35 years. Getting a great range of veggies, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds . . . provides a host of fuel for harder or easier workouts - including rowing (personally, this 58 year old guy pursues gymnast movement and rowing, having trained with Olympians in both areas - really benefitted my rowing!). The real benefit from the variety of whole plant sources are the myriads of nutrients and antioxidants which REALLY supercharge recovery - one of the holy grails for athletic performance. Though I work out hard, and sometimes really feel it after a workout, the next day I'm ready to go again - not sore, not fatigued - plenty of energy and ready to hit it hard again - typically a bit differently, as it is how I train (never the same thing two days in a row - though I am often in the gym 7 days a week, though weekends is mostly lower key stuff, but still often row 30 minutes, just at lower intensity than during the week). The video *The Game Changers* has a few athletes from different disciplines that talk about how this dynamic (fast recovery) has helped them perform better - and some of these are Olympic athletes. There is a reason Tom Brady, and many other athletes have moved to a whole food plant based diet when they are aiming for top performance and *The Game Changers* does a good job of talking about the science behind some of those benefits supporting top tier performance.
