SPSS for newbies: questionnaire data entry

  • Once students have collected their questionnaire data they tend to input the data into Excel and then ask the question "How do I import Excel data into SPSS?". Now it's much more efficient to enter your data into SPSS if you intend to use SPSS for data analysis. In short, how to get data directly into SPSS is what you need. Cut Excel out of it.
    Of course, you could stick to Excel, but if SPSS is new to you, you will feel a lot more familiar with it after you have spent hours entering the data!

    It is very generous of you to show us how this works, especially since many students are struggling with SPSS and data analysis. It seems like numbers and data don't come easily for most social science students. So again, I owe you so much and keep on doing what you are doing - because it really helps! Thank you

    Rosie, you made a good observation, I also like the way you have put it over. Instead of just going off the wire and accusing for the slip, you were very balanced and quite polite to point it out. And your appreciative nature is nice. In all I am sure you will agree that the Professor did a good job, taking time in putting things across.

    What measurement would you use for age that has been put into categories? (Ex. 12-25 & 26+) Would that be ordinal? Also what would the measurement scale be for a participants answers on a qualitative question where they would rank how they felt 1-5? Would this be nominal? I averaged the scores afterwards so that would make the combined answers ordinal right?

    @MichaelSturgeon0317 7 лет назад +4

    11:29 should be nominal, correct? It was left at "scale" in the video. Just confirmation. I love the videos BTW. They are excellent and I provide them to my students in Research Methods. However, there are times I like to go back and follow your thought process - which helps me in presenting.

    • @PhilChanstats
      @PhilChanstats  7 лет назад +2

      Hi Michael
      Yes, you are right. This was one of my earlier videos, and I didn't plan it carefully. I left the "Measures" column as its use is for (a) reminding the modeller about the nature of the variable, (b) only matters if you use Chart Builder.
      I am glad if you can use the videos in your courses. I think there are a number of colleges recommending the videos to their students. There are common question students wish to ask when doing a project over the holidays and they may find it hard to contact their professor.
      On another note, I don't like SPSS. What is routine in other big stats packages like Stata, and R, you need to pay for add-ons with SPSS, or link SPSS to R - well you might as well use R.

    • @MichaelSturgeon0317
      @MichaelSturgeon0317 7 лет назад

      I see. So, now you have piqued my interest in Chart Building. Do you happen to have a video on that? BTW, your video on how to handle multiple answers "tick all that apply" was perfect. I had students confused as to how that should be dealt with - and I personally know that students (as newbies) prefer your speed and thorough explanations. I saw where you can commented about some thinking they were too slow - at least for my students, the speed is right.
      Thank you for the time and effort you put into these videos.

    • @PhilChanstats
      @PhilChanstats  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Michael
      I don't have videos on Chart Builder, but I might have used it as part of another analysis. Well. it's something I can do. Thanks for the idea.
      You know how it is when you are teaching a group - you can never satisfy all students. A good thing about being on video is that viewers can rewind, so my more recent videos are at normal pace.

      I'd like to do a video on Cronbach's Alpha - a popular measure of internal consistency of a scale (and one that some dissertation supervisors/journals insist on) - used in questionnaire analysis. Can any of you share with me your data set that I would use to demonstrate this? Am after a data set that isn't too complex ie doesnt have loads of wierd variables that will take a layman hours to understand.Data from social science, marketing, medical one will do. A small part of the data would do.
