The Bhuddist flag was designed by an American colonel who was a soldier in the American Civil war. He was so impressed by the debating skills of the Buddhist when he read the Pandura debates which tried to argue the superiority of christianity over buddhism. The meetings led to violence breaking out and therefore the debates were in writing. Those written texts were read by Colonel Henry Steele Olcott and the buddhist were relying on a 11th century booklet on debating skills. When Colonel Olcott arrived in Sri Lanka in the 19th century he designed the Buddhist flag. I am a born and bred catholic and have read the book on buddhist catechism written by Colonel Olcott. It is a very good start to learn the essential of buddhism and it is a philosophy. It is not a religion although people the world over get confused and regard it as a religion. So you can be a christian, hindu or muslim and also be a buddhist.
So glad to see that you guys are still in Sri Lanka. Did you visit Kandy yet? If not I'd highly recommend to visit Kandy. Once you are there, make sure to take a stroll around the Kandy lake in the afternoon (after 4pm). It's breathtakingly beautiful in my opinion, and certainly provide the best views of the city. You can also take a boat ride on the lake. Remember, afternoon is the best time to visit Kandy.
I am Still half way in to the video.I love how you guys are informing this so called guides that you two are good by yourselves.Haaha love it.I am Lankan too but maps and little local help you guys will be fine
Yes, I'm from Sri Lanka too, and was annoying to watch the way that guy kept pushing on taking a guide. Don't think he is a guide himself though, maybe he gets a commission. On the other hand, the actual guide at the beginning was so polite.
The kingdom of Polonnaruwa used to be a man made island kingdom, and it was first commissioned by the emperor Parakramabahu the great! This is a later discovery proved by an independent researcher, Mr. Indika Nuwan Manawadu, so not many people know about this. In order to activate ancient canals and ponds, it requires restoring the ancient dam of Parakrama Samudraya (the Ocean of Parakrama) aka Para-Samudra back to its original length, raising the water level by several feet. Currently, the dam is about 14 km in length. Also, there was a canal almost 91 km long with lock gates, which connects the kingdom to the Trincomalee natural harbor, allowing the naval forces to directly access the eastern sea.
Please ignore the tourist guides on those sites. They are like crows all over behind the trees. behind the counters at the vehicle park and all over. They do the same to the locals living there. We went there on a school trip and we had to literally scold them in Sinhala to get rid of them.
Thanks for promoting this paradise on the earth. Most of the people in the world don't have any awareness about Sri Lanka. Really it's a country you should definitely visit
The toque macaques of Polonnaruwa are the stars of the Disney film "Monkey Kingdom". Watch it if you guys want to see what these little guys get up to. :D
Don't talk crap You get ticket check point s at every site by the cultureral triangle officer's. These money's going for up keeping of these sites scattered over a vast area. It is fully worth the money tourists spend on tickets at ancient site's at Anuradhapura, polonnaruwa, sigiriya dambulla, these are world heritage sites, all over the world there's a entry ticket payment for world heritage sites. Maintaining these places are very difficult and very costly. 25$ is peanut s considering the amount of very historical and ancient site's available to visit and learn the ancient civilization.
Try commercial bank or HNB often. Specially avoid many people who trying to help forcefully .(Tuk tuk drivers or guides) Best way is not going to discuss details with them showing lack of interest at first attempt
@@dravisandanna Hats off to you guys for visiting the ancient cities. Most foreign tourists just visit the touristy spots like Ella, Kandy and the southern coast.
Hi! I guess it depends on your nationality. Coming from the Netherlands I had read that we needed to show a return ticket to enter Sri Lanka, but no one asked for it at the airport.
@@tiaay There is a huge difference between a professional guide service and hawking. Guides do not beg like this. Learn from developed economies how tourism operates, Singapore and Malaysia good examples in Asia itself.
Glad you were not ripped off by guides. Don’t give into them. They can be harassing tourists like pests not letting you discover things on your own. You may sometimes see unintended but interesting sites that they may not take you to .
