- In this video, I review the Doge side sword from Albion Swords. The sword is quick and responsive and cut very well. The fit and finish are what we have come to expect from Albion. Thanks again to Russell for loaning me this sword to review.
Such cut! Many sword! Very Venice. WOW!
(Sorry, could not resist)
I love your decision to tie your cutting combo back to Marozzo's assault.
This guy can cut tatami with a crowbar
I second the motion for him to try! 😂
It's not a crowbar though. It's an Albion.
The sword's design reminds me of the sword used by Eredin, leader of the Wild Hunt in Witcher 3
My first thought upon seeing it, practically inspired
Great video ! another interesting fact, the protective finger rings and knuckle bow on the sword was a Spanish influence to Italy. When Spain was the first European global superpower it expanded to Flanders & southern Italy. Hence, on how and where the Doge sword design came from. It was also largely used by Conquistador’s in the Americas, Philippines, and parts of Africa as well.
Nicely done! It looks like a precursor to a backsword... but probably faster and more nimble as backswords are generally slowed down a bit by the mass in the basket guard, in my experience. Very pro cutting here, especially with the false edge. Thanks for the review!
Thank you for doing this video! I enjoyed seeing you wield the Doge :-)
I want to compliment his cutting performance (again...) but I'm worried he'll get sick of hearing about it xD
Spada da fante veneta o castoliere Veneto !!!!!!sono capitato solo ora sul canale !!!!!!!ben fatta 🦾
Drooling over this particular blade. Love the hilt design and everything else about it.
Nice work, both sword and you
Some of the best cuts I've ever seen 😳
3:35 very nice coordination
Why is the finger ring cut back on this example? Edit: saw the answer in comments below. Albion apparently said that it was potentially damaged and they would fix it.
Which is better between the
Doge sword
Windlass raptor
Impressive cutting! :-)
Wow that was the coolest shit I ever seen good job!
Albert Gardin our CXXI Doge is honoured I guess...
Fantastic cuts. Best wishes from Poland, the land of the Witcher ;)
How come the finger ring doesn't to the blade? It's got a large gap that's not present in the pictures.
I sent a message to Albion asking why this is the case with the hilt on the sword. I'll let you know what I hear from them.
Hi John,
If I understand your question correctly, you wonder why the finger ring does not touch the blade but leaves a gap? This is the normal situation for these finger rings. If you look at the photos of the original venetian swords they also have this gap between ring and blade.
The ring can still perform its protective role and shield the index finger from incoming blades.
When I carved the hilt for the Doge I wanted its shape to be faithful to that of th original swords so that it not only has the heft of one of those, but also shares the aesthetics.
I hope this answers your question.
-Best
Peter
I was wondering that as well. The historical examples shown, along with the illustrations and the photos at the end all show a tiny gap at the finger ring, maybe an 1/8”? But the gap on the sword demonstrated is huge in comparison.
I would guess that this is an atypical example. I purchased a Doge directly from Albion around 2017, and the ring comes much closer to the ricasso on my sword.
*Edit: Looking back at the beginning of the video where Philip is holding up the sword in profile towards the camera, it appears as if part of the finger ring is actually missing. My sword's guard looks pretty much identical to the Doge photos shown near the end of this video.
@@philw8049 You are correct! I did not notice that at all. That is an anomaly. It is not the way I designed the sword, carved the original model or the way they are supposed to be leaving the workshop.
wow this video,,,is a/cut above the rest!
how similar is it to a Scottish broadsword?
I would expect that this sword is a bit handier. The basket, I have found for some, is rather inhibiting.
Beautiful but to expensive for me.
