I think other commenters have said this too, but my guess that explains the timing is this - Gores has been working with Monty's agent on a buyout for less than the $65 million owed Monty. Monty and Co. basically said, no way. Gonna have to fire me. And so, Gores finally pulled the trigger on it. My guess is that Gores was pretty set on this all along, and I wouldn't be surprised if that's because (a.) he had to step in and babysit Monty during the season to get him to make the most basic and obvious changes to rotations and (b) based on exit interviews with key players after the season. I can't imagine a scenario in which Tom Gores trusted Monty with another season, and Gores had no one to blame but himself.
