Your tests on the RadExpand 5 are really great and realistic, especially the range test and the video with the Tannus puncture protection were very informative. Because of your recessions, I've now also bought a RadExpand 5! Best regards from Germany!
Received my Rad Expand 5 Saturday. Took it to the bike shop today to have them make sure I set up the bike correctly as well as getting the bike inspected before I take my first adventure. Anxiously awaiting its return to me this week.
Hi Chris, great video. Enjoy every video of yours very much. Do you have a plan to add another battery to Expand using a discharge balancer? It would be interesting to see how you connect two batteries to the Rad controller.
I watched your video, good method for testing and I came up with nearly the same results, fully charged I went exactly 20 miles, the battery just does not carry a charge when you get to 2 or 1 bars. I got 7 mph on my blinking last bar, pedaling fast so I could get home in time. The website is misleading, Pedal assist does not do anything, except move the wheels. So far, to get any significant range out of a 7 lb bike, try to add a battery, have to replace the flywheel, gear it, in other words pour money into the bike, that isn't really worth it. And wait until you have a serious issue with the bike, customer service evaporates. good Luck!!
Nice. I just got myself a RadMission, and although the battery isn't as large, I'm hoping to get about 20-25 miles on a charge with a combination of throttle and pedal assist.
Great video. I got my Expand 5 and here in Vegas we just started in our triple digits so not much riding for me. Do you think it's best I bring my batteries into the house? I think my garage will start getting close to triple digits soon and didn't know how the heat will affect the battery.
we live in the full tropics ( darwin australia ) and yes when it gets bloody hot make sure you leave your bike and battery in the shade, also dont rely on the throttle only as your battery will start to get hot and stressed from the heat, the humidity the the biggest killer !
That is a very good range when you think most people work less than 10 miles from home. You could do that trip without peddling but than that really refeats the point of using a bike instead of a gas guzzler. Though it is still better for the planet.
I took my rad power expand 5 on a trail ride once...then I took down just acrossed the field...too bumpy so I got back out...next day ...flat tire...I thought these bikes were rugged off road tough😢 I now gotta get it fixed
@@PedalWithPower Yeah, that's a long way in four days bike packing. I average around 30 miles a day but live in Nevada and have to deal with carrying gallons of water and wide tires for the sandy dirt roads I travel. Would love to have places like you do - right next to a stream - and just filter. The winter mouths here are more mild but often windy. Cruising the strip on a mountain bike is always good for laughs. The bane of the US southwest is traffic. Very, very, very few places to safely ride on paved roads. All the cities are dangerously overcrowded. That's what drove (pun intended) me to mountain bikes and bike packing - dirt roads, trails and hinterlands.
He's getting paid to upsell rad , and I do not mean it in a bad way because he needs to keep the Channel going as well. I personally have owned 3 Rad's and trust me they are underpowered. The components aren't that high quality as well. If I was you I'll buy something else specially now since the market is flooded with better options. It's not good to run the battery to zero or even low. For people wanting to go long distance it's better to get a second battery and not completely run them out.
@@BigBoysWorkshop No, lithium batteries are affected by depleting to zero as well. It may not be as impactful as it is on lead-acid, but over time it will have a noticeable impact on capacity & performance.
@@Brisk229obody's arguing your point but people still want to know how far their charge will take them. The host isn't suggesting you take it to zero but if the bike get 30 miles you'll know roughly how long until the battery is considered low(20% or less) I'm also skeptical about your claim since people run their phone battery to near zero everyday and it doesn't seem to effect longevity.
@@andrewdishman26 Running your phone to zero does affect the longevity of the phone battery, the change is gradual enough that people don’t notice the reduction of battery life. and I wasn’t arguing for or against the charge range, I was letting the person above me know that lithium batteries are damaged by depleting to zero. An example could be the Chevrolet volt, which I believe has a usable range of 20-80 percent of the total battery charge. The usable range exists to prevent overcharging and over-depleting the battery pack in order to get the longest life possible, because running the battery to complete depletion will significantly reduce the total lifespan of the battery pack.

Yeah, it's 20. If you get the digital display you can change it to about 25, but with the throttle only it still goes around 20. Standard for a class 2 ebike.
Even though only 20 mph, not all 20 mph are created equal. What I mean is that the Rad Runner is powerful with quick acceleration so it can keep up with even the most ardent 10 speed fast bicyclist & anyone lapping you will just look like a crazy person. My EB5 pro plus with its small tires had to build up to top speeds & therefore had fell way behind speedster on manual bikes. My Hyper Mountain ebikes fall somewhere between the two with passers occurring not that often & appearing unsafe and crazy when passing.
@@PedalWithPower that's too bad that you need the upgrade for this eh. Another question I had was, how water resistant is the bike in your experience? Can I ride in the rain?
@@luiscosta5678 On the Rad Expand 5, there is no display setting that disables the throttle. You can check your throttle wiring and make sure it didn't disconnect.

Oh, the treads and innertubes have nothing to do with how rugged the bike is!
A hardtail mountain bike with serfas tires pedals easily around 12 mph. Keep eating and breathing and the range is pretty much unlimited.
I hear ya. My last bikepacking race I got 352 miles in 92 hours on my hardtail before callapsing.
Lots of eating a breathing though 👍
