There are so many negative comments here, but winning the first game was so important for us...sure the second half was unconvincing. However, the potential addition of Shaw for the next game will give us a better balance & I believe we have the quality to beat Denmark...good but frustrating start!
Serbia were a strong team, it's arrogant to think England could just steamroller them. To me England are 5th favorite to win as usual .
I don't think it's about steamrollering. It's about the fact that England looked like they had no control. And at the end especially looked like Burnley hanging on for the win against Man City.

The performance is irrelevant... Some players are not at their peak physical condition yet and will be better for a tough 90 minutes... Serbia are physically very tough think people are losing sight of that fact... constant fouling and bodychecks Jude even got a elbow into the side of his head that I'm surprised the ref didn't check... but that left hand side is a issue.. Luke shaw...we badly need him...foden especially needs a fit Luke shaw... he's the key to our success
We won, and kept one of the only clean sheets in the tournament so far. People in the comments acting like we've just been bent over 10-0 by San Marino. Absolute melts.

@@Buvey “was so good” is the issue here … we beat an average side 1-0. Southgate hasn’t got the bollocks to make attacking subs and we looked flat after 30 minutes. Trent and Foden both ABYSMAL tonight. We will get beat by any top 10 side if we play like that. Gareth Southgate needs to rewatch the game and get a grip of his tactics such a spineless manager. Also rice didn’t have a good game ? Mate ur smoking the whacky baccy he was one of our best players tonight. Covered our arse many times and showed his class in this team.

Foden LW doesn’t work for England how many times do we have to see it. Foden 10, Bellingham 8 and Rice 6 is the answer. Foden should have been pulled at HT for Gordon. If we play like that against one of the better sides it’s over.

@@nozzer2002 never by the looks of it, in his 40 apps I’m struggling to think of a good performance from him. He’s a 10 but unfortunately Southgate sees Bellingham as a 10 too and Bellingham is clear of Foden so as crazy as it sounds Foden should be benched.

Trent camnot start the next game, looks out of his depth in that position. Gallagher should start to man mark Eriksen out of the game and stifle their creativity.

Defensively Tripper looked okay but offered nothing offensively, he didn't overlap once or attempt a cross all game. Foden creates alot of space out wide by drifting inside, for Trippier to not exploit it once is criminal, he just isn't a left back... We need Shaw more than we realise!
He was out in front of foden plenty. He's just not comfortable crossing with his left. But outside of shaw no one else is, so :shrug:

Drop Foden for Gorden in next game. Liked the Saka/Bowen rotation. Prefer Gallagher for TAA. Rotate Kane for either CF to get behind defences
I think we were watching a different game. Kane, albeit he saved us with a header on the line, was pretty anonymous and tired throughout, Trent looked ok in midfield and lots of play were centred around him. Foden I think needs to be Jude’s back-up. Happy with Gueye but Stones looked a liability - no understanding with his keeper. Hope in the next match he starts Eze or Gordon but not got my hopes up.
For me the biggest worry is Southgates slow decision making, the game was crying out for changes and yet again he left it too late.

Bellingham can do the same om the left, Foden needs the center. Just swap them. Let Trent make diagonals and crosses to Jude
Kane had a bad performance, he doesn’t look fully fit. In the first half he needed to drop deeper and try to get foden/ Bellingham to run in benhind.

No, it was a clunky, disjointed and reminiscent of too many of England's tournament offerings under Southgate. Players played out of position, the wrong personal chosen for the roles required (a right back who can't use his left foot and therefore doesn't offer crucial width). Or perhaps picking a career right back at the last minute, into midfield that already has more suitable candidates and expecting him not to look positionally lost and off the pace? This is groundhog day over again. Pick the wrong starting lineup and when things invariably go wayward, wait too long to do anything about. Those substitutions should have happened at half time.
England was very average/poor today. Bellingham was the best player by a country mile. Kane was sluggish and slow, Foden was pretty absent, and Rice was mediocre.
I’d like to see Gordon on the left and either Watkins/Toney upfront.

Did you watch the game? Rice was an absolute engine in the midfield. Nothing got by him. Not great once he hits the final third but infront of the back line he is fantastic

Foden needs to be benched unless he's played in a midfield 3 with Bellingham and Rice.
If Foden doesn't play there then Trent needs to be replaced with Mainoo or Wharton. The only thing Trent has is long passing which is maybe 25% of what a deep midfielder needs.

@@cavanriley7373I wanted to say something similar. Agree with the first part (from the OP), disagree with the second. If you remove him from midfield, you put him at right back --- although, against stronger teams, I'd not have Trent at right back.
@cavanriley7373 Kane then drop deeper at times as he loves to do and whip balls in behind for the wingers. I think Gallagher would give us a stronger centre midfield with his pressing and energy
Trent should play. Gallagher can be introduced anytime they need.

Reality is, these type of performances win titles. Germany has player a "pretty" game last WC, they dominated all 3 games yet they crashed out in groups.
Performance from CBs was probably the best Ive seen from England in a while. Now correct me if Im wrong and Im not english or follow the media around NT but iirc there was a lot of media backlash for the backline. Even TAA looked good at CM. He isnt playing as flashy as you dont have space down the middle the way you do on the flank. This guy cant defend against top level wingers and this is the best you can do with him atm

Foden just can’t get into the team with Bellingham and Saka playing so well so consistently.
I would like to see if he can stretch the wing similar to how Saka does, but if he’s gonna avoid doing that so he can play in midfield then he can’t be misplacing passes while we’re attacking. Foden is purely in the team for his technical ability except hes not even showing that. Gordon needs to start over him 100%.
Trent’s passing is his biggest asset but if Saka is the only one making runs in behind then it’s wasted. Gordon and Watkins are needed if you want to get the most out of him. I’d rather put Wharton in over Trent, better defensively, higher work rate, better linkup play, yes his long passing isn’t as good but it’s not like Trent is doing much with it.
Not an incredible performance by any measure.
Most players had moments but few of them telling as can be shown from the few chances created.
The team looked good when Serbia stood off them. But we were so reluctant to get the ball in the box - maybe because of the size of the oppo. Suffice to say chances were few and far between.
Second half showed the lack of cohesion. Organised well enough, but offered so little on the break because they were too deep.
As a palace fan I was crying out for eze and Wharton for hidden and Trent at half time. Putting on mainoo as a 10 at the end I’m not so sure about.
A win is an important win. 3 points so great result. Lots of work to do for all. Southgate needs to be more proactive and brave with subs
“very good at minimizing mistakes” but thats the problem. that was perfect for getting england out of the gutter but there is real expectations for this side now. southgate minimizes risk for the opposition by minimizing them for the team. that means going compact after a goal, relying on talent rather than tactics for buildup, alienating a lot of the squads strength in order to block off the goal. this game was the same as the final against italy. against quality opposition, if you dont grab the game by the throat, the quality will overpower your block and take a trophy right out of your hands

But kept the result and got three points from against a very strong team . And guess what ?? They got criticized for it . Just ridiculous

I think if you want the best out of that midfield we need players who are gonna run in behind, Gordon for Foden on left wing and Bowen for Kane as striker. If you’re adamant that Kane has to play then I’d still go for Gordon on the left so Kane has a runner to link up with but then drop Trent for Wharton
It wasn’t good but it was solid and it doesn’t matter how pretty it is in the groups really. Argentina lost to Saudi Arabia in their opener and won the WC. As long as we play better against the better sides nobody will care about how we look against Serbia.

Great to see this optimism from England and their supporters after that second half. Your biggest jinx is the song, it doesn’t know that home address since it’s never been there. If it coming home it will go to Spain or Germany, since it’s been there twice already. But who knows, maybe that’s what the song is referring to.

Wharton whould play 3rd game and start but after team has qualified put him position to succeed hes too good and tooyoung to start him against denmark. I agree generally thoght width and vertical threat is whats missing then foden has room to create like city and jude can get forward likefor madrid. Mainoo can keep ball circulating with rice they have great chemistry. Work wharton into it either for mainoo or foden comes off and jude moves up further.
Defending wasnt issue becasue it was serbia and they only played 60minutes really. Thats biggest concern is back line against team that can counter portugal, germany with sane, france. Problem for later in tournament this mf attack will retain enough possession to keep pressure minimal.

Deluded analysis. We did Southgate classic tactic of going 1-0 up 15 mins in and shutting up shop and playing a low block against Serbia. Embarrassing. Foden ghosted AGAIN. People say its just because he's on the wing and not No. 10 but if you played Bellingham anwhere in mid field or attack he would influence the game. Foden shouldn't start and I think people are seeing that.
