A correction and some comments, as I watch the video:
His major start at directing was the Urusei Yatsura anime (yes, that Urusei Yatsura) in 1981, who have some really experimentative moments, specially in the second part of the series.
His film debut was the first Urusei Yatsura movie, Only You, in 1983. It was a somewhat problematic for Oshii as the sponsors/production comitee forced him to pull out many elements that he wanted to include in the movie.
Also, his second movie, Beautiful Dreamer, is often called a "surreal-existentialist" comedy and most fans consider to be his most representative work in that point of his career. As the title suggests, is a movie heavily based in dream experience, using very well the characters created by Takahashi even with the surreal atmosphere. It was acclaimed and did when in the box-office, but irritated the series creator, Rumiko Takahashi, and so lost his job as the director of the anime series.

      EDIT:
      I missed some things up.
Oshii had not "great plans" for Only You, it was just a "longer TV episode" (as Oshii describes), a safe bet for the Studio Pierrot (the producers) get into feature films.
That's why Oshii wanted to make a "unique" movie when the decision to make a second movie came out as he thought that Only You was a failure as a "true movie", in his concept.

I just love how tons of big Anime Directors just have random involvement with Lupin. Hayao Miyazaki, Mamoru Oshii, Sayo Yamamato and probably a good deal I'm missing.

It is pretty much THE Anime in Japan. It gets a special every year and has had five series. So its not surprising the series has had an assortment of personalities work on it. When a franchise is 50+ years old you eventually get to that point. It makes sense then how both Oshii and Miyazaki's names could be attached to it.

I'm sure one day I'll be favored, but I'm pretty happy with where I am right now. The only thing I would like is more comments per video for feed back, but right now I like the small channel aesthetic. Allows me to interact with my viewers through comments unlike larger channels. The channel is having constant growth so I'm doing it right as far as I can tell.

@@Pseudiom Good to hear! I was trying to get my channel going when I discovered your channel. It kinda broke my heart seeing bunch of high quality videos with low numbers. It nearly discouraged me from even starting. Because, why bother putting a week or more, worth of labor and time to only get a handful of views...

If you got the time, give it a try. The hardest subscribers to get are your first 100. After that, it starts getting easier. I've noticed most video makers like to hype-up RUclips as being this impossible task, but, if you're smart, it is not really. You just have to understand it is a time investment with very little return at first.

I love Angel's Egg, such a beautiful movie with a very immersive atmosphere. Really reminds me of Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker.
Mamoru Oshii is known for GiTS but I think he has made a lot of other excellent movies. I highly recommend watching The Red Spectacles if you can, despite being live action, it's still so creative in its direction. I love it

Belladonna of Sadness has been on my to watch list for a while now. It looks very interesting. As with anything, I can't say I will do anything on it until I watch and research it more. From what I know though, I think I can get more then enough material on it. And I'd like to expose people to more "weird" or fringe stuff like it. Probably won't start anything on it in the next few weeks (I have a few videos I want to get done), but eventually...

Thank you for your amazing video analysis! You really made good work!
Regarding my analysis - I'll try to put it shortly: as we all struggle to understand specific meaning of all the symbols which we abstract from the movie and search for the advocacy in inner coherency of the symbols' meaning (correlation that seems logic: cross -> Christianity; egg -> source/unknown; birds -> angels/divinity; mechanical sun -> technology as modern deity etc.) we find out that all interpretations are more or less suitable and possible. We also agree that openness to different views is inherent to the movie, so to me the general AMBIGUITY of the movie is it's main feature (core) - just like in a dream (the movie is dream like and we know that dreams were Oshii's inspiration). Furthermore: religious symbolism, our own dreams, the reality that surrounds us - all that is AMBIGUOUS, so our reality is no better than reality in the movie. Or is our reality - on its very edge of understanding - surreal in the end? Once again! AMBIGUITY! All our symbols in religions are ambiguous, like our dreams and our understanding of our reality (what's really matter? what's energy? what was before the big bang?).
The warrior says once to the girl: "keep your precious things inside you" - so we keep our obscure and intimate/internal dreams that send us back to the obscure (out/under)world of the Unknown and Spiritual.
PS. Why does the mechanical sun descend from the sky (like the girl that jumps off the ark down to the town) and in the end rises from the sea (just like the girl's last breath when she fell into the water)? There is a strong relation between the sun god and the girl. It wakes her up, it asks the warrior at the beginning who is he; she also becomes the part of the sun when she dies (like a saint/enlighten). Once again - we are about to solve the symbolic riddle but than once again we end up with no or various answers - ambiguous!
To sum up - the movie is to it's very core realistic and brings about a transformation to the viewer: from our basic everyday way of being to the deep and spiritual/meditative mode of consciousness so we can dive into the depths of our own subconsciousness (obscure god is already in us -> that's gnosis and medieval mysticism).

Your videos deserve more credit than they have. You site every source in the description (I've noticed many forget that). You list off your points fluidly, and the music in the backround doesn't get in the way until you focus on it which is a relief. Your voice isn't forced and feels LOADS comfortable to listen to. And I can always appreciate someone referencing religion in theories because that means they actually did research.
Also as I type this I realize this video is like a year old lmao

    • @Pseudiom
      @Pseudiom  5 лет назад +1

I noticed that too. One wonders if that was commentary by Oshii by excluding the reference. Maybe the flood is an oblique reference to, "When the stars threw down their spears and water'd heaven with their tears: did he smile his work to see?". One notices, at the end, the Boy has little reaction to the proceedings. Commentary on God's work then? Then the spears are part of the mechanical god too? I think its personal interpretation again as well. The Girl could just as well be the Lamb and the boy the Tyger.

"25 years ago" - someone forgot the date:D unless you held out on us for almost twenty years with this one:DD
I do agree that the eggs at the end symbolize faith. I thought that was the point.
The girl blindly (innocently) believes it to hatch
The boy wants proof that there is something in it, and by forcing the 'truth', he destroyed it
Her death was in a way maybe a martyr death, and it produced a hundred more "chances" that can be nurtured in faith or broken to see if it's worth it
    I think

I dislike art films, so I’m a little biased but: whilst the film is visually and musically stunning and gives off an interesting atmosphere, it’s meaningless-essentially, a crock of shit. I view it as the director just wanting to make something bizarre and avant garde to simply just do so. The director was just up his own ass in a way like “it’s ART bro.”
I think there’s no reason to analyze these nonsense art films. One can enjoy them (I like Eraserhead) but to treat them as anything more than entertainment is just wasting time.
