Although books and websites are great, there's nothing like having a real-life teacher to help us along the path. But how can we find a Buddhist teacher? How can we know who is reliable and who is to be avoided? Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo talks about how she met her own teacher, and the qualities we should look out for in a potential Buddhist teacher.

The way I found my master was something right out of one of those Zen stories. He was literally waiting for me by the side of a river.
Excellent advice, very clear!
Especially in Tibetan Buddhism the idea that one should never question our lama and that such thoughts are motivated by our ego and defilements are among the most toxic and degenerated aspects of what the original teachings of the Buddha have become.
Definitely a good advice to me. Thank you Jetsunma :)
Excelente!
Thank you Jetsunma🙏🏼

Yeah, but how long is any lama going to want you hanging around their sanghe asking questions about them or their beliefs and methods before tiring of you? My experience with religious leaders is they're far more worried about having a nice building to draw more people for more money, and they kind of enjoy being genuflected top and pampered a lot. I'm not a Christian but I've studied their book pretty carefully. Jesus washed peoples dirty feet! He hung out with people of ill repute. And he wasn't impressed by wealthy people.
I dare you to find ANY religious leader of ANY religion with those kind of methods lol Even Christians today would probably recrucify him for being "immoral" and poor :P
I can name you half a dozen or so Buddhist teachers, in the US, who are more than happy to have people come for months, or years, and ask questions, before accepting that teacher as their personal teacher. Visit some decent Buddhist centers and you'll see the same thing for yourself. Twenty years is not realistic, but certainly you can take time, ask questions, look at the senior students. of course, there are also those who are like you say, more interested in having a big center and being adored, but again, take your time and they are easy enough to spot and to weed out.
