  • Although everyone knew it would happen, Timmy just keeps getting better and better! I wouldn't post this normally because there are lots of videos out there but this is THE BEST version I have heard. I think he's now singing most of it full voice and it just adds so much power it's awesome.

It has been a great thrill for me to have both Platinum and Vocal Spectrum sing my arrangement of "Bring Him Home." Both Timmy and Tony are gifted singers, but Tim seems to have reached another level. For me, an arranger's greatest reward is to see someone sing his music. The comments below are extremely gratifying to me and I appreciate them greatly.

What you just experienced is four exceptional vocalists singing an exceptional arrangement. This is an exceptional quartet . Tim is outstanding. Did anyone notice the facial expressions starting from 00? And maintaining it throughout? I pray I will never have to sing this for my son. God Bless all of you.

But in the play, Jean Valjean is also thinking about his daughter as he sings this song. He knows he is “old, and will be gone,” and he desperately wants Marius to survive and be with Cosette, to take care of her.

OMG....first, don't apologize for uploading this!! This is an awesome version, sound quality is better than most that's not recorded straight from the on-stage mic. My hearing has gone to crap the past few years but I can STILL hear the overtones that the great quartets produce....absolutely amazing quartet, these guys, and a beautiful arrangement of an already beautiful song. I haven't heard Platinum's version, I'll definitely need to look for that now (Joe coached my quartet many years ago, and I've been a fan of his since his Keepsake days). Kudos to both the guys performing this AND the arranger of this version. Amazing, and tear jerking!!!! :O

I've been around a while too Mr Shopbrat.Going back some 60 years in this thing when it was still SPEBSQSA.I've heard all of them and I'll tell you one thing Yeah DeRosa is great but there are a whole hell of a lot of great ones on any given night. This is about encouragement of Barbershop singing not about who is THE bestest, best of the best Best.Give me a guy like this with the passion and balls he has and I'll be brought to tears.Growing up in Michigan we had some kids like this.Names like Gore and Slamka and others I could name. This kid Tim here has got skills and is going to go very far in this thing and I'll be glad as hell if he continues. We should be grateful we have people still willing to compete with all this competition and judgement. Its funny the ones on these sites contribute very little and most can't sing they're way out of the toilet.

I keep coming back to this rendition. It's absolutely gorgeous, and a very interesting recording for several reasons. Tim's tuning deviations from 12-equal-like steps are quite expressive melodically, since he sings his dramatic minor seconds at different sizes based on the crescendo. For example, the one at 2:50-2:55-ish is quite low (if my ear is correct, he's singing the b9 in a V/vi, so scale degree 4 in the key), clocking in at my ear to sound low enough to flirt with the quarter-tone ~ 70c boundary... so maybe something like 65-ish cents? Anyway, the sliding and inflection is very attentive... because that chord doesn't have to lock and ring, but the angsty dissonance perfectly sets us up for the next bigger moment - "If I die!!!" But in OTHER moments where that same device is used and the chord DOES have to quasi-lock, he uses a high semitone like we'd expect in JI around 16/15, or perhaps even higher (!) like the one at 0:46-ish that sounds a bit like 130c to me (but it sounds so good!!!!). Tim's tone is so clear and natural-sounding for the high register he is in as well. There are some cool vowel moments where barbershop instincts may be clashing with choral instincts - for instance, diphthongs. Moments like "hear my prayer" (0:33-0:37) and various "bring him homes" at times seem very barbershop because of how wide his mouth is. But the sound just gels perfectly and the overtones match almost instantly!!! The blending of supposedly "opposite" singing techniques is seamless. This ensemble is so good that sometimes I think to myself - "They've got to be cheating somehow." LOL! I'm also floored by Tim's dynamic control at the ends of phrasings, where one would normally use vibrado to increase the energy as the note ends. However, Tim manages to create that feeling of energy increase with a completely straight tone. His skill is not to be underestimated. That's hard. REALLY hard.
There's only two things wrong with this recording. The microphone should have been a little farther away from Tim - the balance is off in loud sections and he overpowers the ensemble because of it (he's such a loud dude!!!). And, the ONLY chord sung out of tune (can you find it?) is the I chord at 1:26-ish (just a little too Pythagorean). But yes... FREAKING. AMAZING. This group. The level these guys are on is just unreal.

The one in the middle is the bass, furthest right is the baritone.

It's not a terrible rendition at all, that's completely unfair. Obviously, it doesn't appeal to your tastes, which is fair enough (Colm Wilkinson has a very different way of singing the song, and for the record, I like that too), but that doesn't give you the right to say it's indisputably bad. Lots of people like it, and he sings it with a huge degree of emotion, and skill, which fit the song well.

It was sarcasm, buddy. They start out in B flat major, but unintentionally they shift towards B major, a half step up from what they originally started. But the change is so subtle, and they're all in tune with each other that it still sounds fine. This happens occasionally in acapella groups, because there isn't an instrument like a piano that's at a set tuning to help keep them in the same key. Oh, and by the way - There's no such thing as an H major.
