  • I met Louis Zamperini when he was 95 years old. That day I spent with him taught me so much about what a man is really made of. In today's video, I share some lessons he taught me that men need to imitate today.

What man from the past do you think men today could learn a lot from?

Richard "Dick" Proenneke... the man who lived alone in Alaska for 30 years and documented his journey. He built his own cabin in the Alaska wilderness with his bare hands and used hand tools to do it.

That is exactly what I learned from my grandfather! He said that he was successful in life because he outworked everyone. He wasn’t the smartest, or the most talented but he outworked and outsmarted. He always said to pray for wisdom. God is always willing to give out wisdom to those who ask.

The “we waste time” part made me feel like my heart was broken, because it’s so true in my life. One of my fears is I’ll die with all of these great ideas and things in my head but never out for the world to enjoy. A foolish dreamer.

Great and inspiring video. I would love to spend more time on things I'm passionate about and have the most meaning to me, but it is a serious challenge in today's society. I will share that I've been working on that however as I had this epiphany a week and a half ago. While it's challenging, I have been enjoying life more since I started this journey and indeed to keep on working on it. Thanks for the video. I hope others take heed as the world would be a better place if they do.

You done good, Jason! Yep, work is a kind of investment into the future. So, too, is encouragement a kind of investment into other people. As good as the video was, as interesting as the Louie Zamperini stuff was, seeing you make connections, to learn on the fly was the best part. Hang in there and ignore, avoid negative and mediocre people; they suck the life, the initiative out of others. Hope y'all are enjoying the house. :-)

That's extremely true. People always telling me they don't have time to do what they want, no time to get into shape, too old,Blah blah blah. It's that it's not really a priority to them. I also hear them talk about the video games they play or TV shows they watch or going home and napping in their lazy boy. There's a reason they call it a lazy boy. Because it Makes you into lazy boy. Not into a man. I did away with the nonsense. Don't religiously watch TV shows sports, play games, nor do I even own a lazy boy. All of that frees me up to exercise, do my many hobbies and whatever else I want.

You’re 100% correct. I founded an inner city nonprofit working with disengaged young men. Vast majority w/o a father around. Our students, 12-18 yrs old, volunteer to join, meet weekly education, participation & other performance goals. Just to earn eligibility to work on the weekends at our micro business, where they make an entry level wage.
We have a waitlist to join, because these young men instinctually want to be providers & protectors. Work ethic development > workforce development.
Sorry for the long post, just want to encourage you along your journey.

I definitely need to work on my time management of things. I waste time doing non-essential things that I feel like are necessities and that actually “show” a progress….and neglect the more important because I don’t see the “immediate” results I want.

Funny, I just watched your The Surprising Benefits of Smoking a Pipe, where you talked about the need to slow down, to not always feel like you need to be getting something done, to spend quality time doing nothing and savoring the moment while enjoying a pipe. In this video, you seemingly make the exact opposite point.

A good rule of thumb, do what makes you happy, not everyone else, do what benefits your life, not everyone else, stop killing yourself for other people and not receiving anything back. Time spent doing the things you enjoy only improve life. If everyone stuck to this mindset, things might just be a bit better. Now im not saying to be selfish and ignore your spouse or children or someone in need of help, im simply saying do not sacrifice your happiness because someone else thinks you should be spending that time differently.
