One more thing, has anyone noticed that every solution always works on RUclips? I would love to see this man come make this video at my house. The outcome wont turn out the same.
I just tried it and it worked like a charm on the first board-to-board squeak. A few other applications not as much. Aside from pouring WD-40 down all of the cracks in my floors, I think a more permanent solution is in store... screws. BTW, you might also get temporary relief from squeaks by applying a new coat of polyurethane. The more you get in those cracks, the less it squeaks for board-to-board squeaks. It won't last but a year or two on old floors, but it does help stick things up for a while. Baby powder also works like WD-40 but can be sucked out by a vacuum if you use one on your floors.
My floating engineered wood flooring was squeaking terribly (concrete sub floor) when the temperature outside was very cold, and my relative humidity was very low - around 21%. I also keep my home fairly cool as well to save on energy. I reversed this I used 2 humidifiers to crank up the humidity and i now have my home temperature thermostat set up on Auto to keep the temperature constant at 21C. Most of the squeaking disappeared after few days when the relative humidity started to be in the mid 30's and up. I used the DW-40 dry lube for the remaining. Worked great. So, most likely, it was due to the environment. Easy to fix when you know about it, and if the squeaks really bugs me....and it works better than talcum powder. Thank you for the tip. I just hope that the DW-40 does not leave marks on the wood after few days...
That's great to hear! Usually squeaks are from some sort of moisture issue, whether it's a low relative humidity (RH) in the winter or a high RH in the summer. Although engineered wood floor is designed to be stable in most moisture conditions, it can sometimes react to changes in moisture swings. So keeping your environment consistent is really important. And it sounds like you've been doing that! Great job on getting to the bottom of your squeaks!
Happy to hear this helped! It may also be good to check the humidity of your home as well. That's a common cause for squeaks too. We have an article on our website about how humidity changes can affect your floor: themasterscraft.com/protect-wood-floors-whole-home-humidifier/
Now i have applied it on 20 m2 laminate squeaky floor. After one day floor is very silent. I spend just 150ml of WD 40. Thanx a lot Master Craft for this advice.
Thank you for the tip. Tried everything including screwing the boards down again. Sorted with wd40 in seconds. Not bothered about the slight stain as underlay and carpet will be going down. Many thanks
My laminated wood floor sounded like walking on paper during the summer. I tried this and it made the joint part open slightly, now I feel the panel lifting a bit and the paper sound is now a full squeak. This damaged my floor. Now it's winter and the floor are no longer crackling except for the wood panels that I fixed using this method.
I'm accidentally dropped paraffin wax oil on the floor right on the noise area with normal trafic, and it stop for almost 2 1/2 years, but the surface look a little bit thicker if feel by hand.
the issue I see here is that WD-40 eventually evaporates. Why not try light wood oils with the same procedure. Less smell and probably does that same thing. This seems like trying Coca Cola before trying actual liquid copper polish for polishing copper.
I was thinking the same thing, to cure it with an oil. What happens is, the squeak is produced by two very smooth surfaces brushing against each other. Wood becomes smooth over time as it dries and also is "sanded down" by other boards constantly moving. Introducing moisture (oil) makes the surfaces rough and does not produce squeaking noise. Simple as that. But it is a temporary solution as it does not stop boards from moving and drying again. How temporary, depends on the oil and how quick it is absorbed by wood and how quickly it evaporates. WD-40 does evaporate quick. It contains only about 10-20% of lubricants.

Well , I just got hearing aids and my 1955 hardwood floors SQUEAK loudly . So I was thinking about using linseed oil or mineral oil . I also have a gallon of WD40 with a refillable spray bottle with a spray or stream setting . There are many squeaks in the 14' x 18' floor so I may try all three in different spots. My computer chair has taken the finish from a 3 foot circle and will need refinishing after the lube job.

Sorry but I just viewed this video. Laminates floors have MDF and HDF core materials (pressed wood powder). I have to believe this would swell the core material in the joints. Luxury Vinyl Flooring has polymers that may plasticize with the WD-40 (at least that's my thought). Hi, Because of the unnecessary distracting background music we can't hear the squeak, and the lack of it after the treatment, so we can't actually see/hear it working.
It’s squeaking because either adhesive wasn’t used or nails are coming loose. This is not a permanent fix and if you pay someone to fix your squeaks and they do this, they’re ripping you off.
Yeah I would not recommend that. Especially when you go to refinish the floor and you're going to have bonding issues on every edge of the board because the WD-40 will not flash off... It might fix the squeaky floor but you're going to have major peeling problems I don't care how many times you buff the floor what's in between the cracks of the floor is there.
One more thing, has anyone noticed that every solution always works on RUclips? I would love to see this man come make this video at my house. The outcome wont turn out the same.

We haven't tried that, only the classic WD40.
They are not the same thing. Wd-40 is a penetrating oil, white lithium grease is a grease.
Didnt work for mine
Tailgate warranty included!
Has anyone ever tried Tung Oil ?
the squeaks back when WD 40 gets dry
Leo Can that's what I was afraid of
Lol 😂
Is there anything WD40 cant do?!?
While this method may actually work your demonstration proves nothing. Reading a lot of the comments I don't think I'll be trying this.
Hi,
Because of the unnecessary distracting background music we can't hear the squeak, and the lack of it after the treatment, so we can't actually see/hear it working.
Good point! Will keep it in mind for next time!
What is your preferred hardwood floor cleaner?
We recommend Real Clean Floors. You can find them on Amazon.
Bona is good too.
It’s squeaking because either adhesive wasn’t used or nails are coming loose. This is not a permanent fix and if you pay someone to fix your squeaks and they do this, they’re ripping you off.
Right, this is a temporary fix. Most squeaks are coming from the causes you mentioned or by seasonal movement.
No one light a cigarette 😄
How long does this last? How many times will you have to reapply?
30deblanc This will depend on how much movement there is between the boards and how much traffic the floor gets.
Lol despite cleanup wd40 has a “fragrance” that will stick around awhile lol
Ironic that WD40 has something that will 'stick' around :P
Vegetable oil also works.
Terrible idea as it will rancify (rot) and stink. No offense intended.
@@acwrobel1 what about mineral oil then?
would it work with laminate floor?
i have the same question
I used wood ash on my laminate floor, works great.
Tim Smith - I agree with you. Do you know another way?
Better vax the floor?
Now your house will go in flames in a shorter time, Don't bother calling the fire department. 🚒🧑🚒
That's only a temp fix, once the oil evaporates the squeak comes right back. Shims, screws are the best way.
Yeah, it'll polish the floor while you're at it too.
Right now I'll give anything a try lol!
Hope it helps! We also have more ways to stop squeaks on our website here: themasterscraft.com/silence-4-types-squeaky-floors/
I would never do that! On any floor. Not recommended
"Be sure that the odor of the WD40 is something you can deal with"?!? In a private home? NOT NOT NOT!!!
Can't wait to spray WD40 on my CARPETED floor, that would be awesome.
Wouldn't the humidity of the wd 40 make the floor to get swolen though?
What? WD stands for Water Displacement. It will, in fact, reduce moisture.
Will try!
Bicycle wax….your welcome
Flower, baby powder, and even baking powder works.
Doesn’t it just get sucked up with a vacuum? Also, wouldn’t the vibrations eventually accumulate underneath lifting the woodwork out of place?
I read it's quite toxic
How do you put a flower between the slats in your floor?
