  • Equals is a movie which takes place in a world where people do not have emotions. Emotions are seen as a disease. We follow the main character, Silas, as he starts to discover what emotions are and what love is. Essentially this movie is a romance movie which so happens to take place in a dystopian world. Let's talk about what I think about it!

    It's part of a trilogy. That's what you're missing. Drake Doremus did three movies about love and time. Like Crazy is about a couple trapped by their past. Breathe In is about a couple stuck in their uncertain present. Equals is about a couple wrestling with their uncertain future. The futuristic/dystopian part is just a vehicle for this concept; it really shouldn't be compared to other dystopian stuff. The worldbuilding is purposefully sparse. The main question is "Can love survive a loveless future?"

    I think one thing that should be taken into account about the quality of the movie is the cinematography - it was filled so brilliantly! If your someone that cares for the aesthetic of a film, you’ll love this!!

    I think this was actually a pretty decent film, maybe even an underrated gem. There are a couple of scenes that really worked for me, and I think the whole premise is thought provoking and open to interpretation.

      I'm really grateful you are sharing this perspective. sometimes i have really high standards for this genre because dystopian is my favorite so i have a specific thing I am looking for which can make me a bit closed off to seeing the full value of it.

    I agree the world building was weak (as well as backstory for pretty much all the supporting characters, it had kind of a short-film feel to it) but I still liked the movie for the feeling of it and I thought Silas did a lot w/o much dialogue. And I liked the ending, the message being that you can't always hold onto the feelings you once had in a relationship but you can stay committed anyway (whether in a romantic relationship or dealing w someone w alzhimers, dementia, mental illness, etc).
    Keep up the good work. Cheers.

    THX 1138, 1971 . Also the novel This Perfect Day by Ira Levin.Also the corny acronym S.OS. , the fear of contamination and the phony empathy sound a lot like the early days of the AIDS crisis. Suprised Doremus is so young.

    One of the central themes in my mind was: Is love and human connection more than biochemistry. Is there a fundamental intellectual component to it? Can we have connection beyond and without the physical (*cough* internet *cough*) especially in a society were we have to function and fulfill metrics? Can we transcend the disconnection that the almost religious devotion to rationality and technology caused? Can we even escape human nature or is no amount of tech gonna do that? Stuff like that. But it was pretty shallow and the films answer was "nice question, dunno".

    • @HeartofMichii
      @HeartofMichii  Год назад

      I think that's why I was disappointed -- the potential of that theme was inspiring, but the execution was just meh.

    ... Equals is like A Brave New World, or other classic dystopian novels. Emotional inhibitors and false Utopias are key parts of the genre.

    • @HeartofMichii
      @HeartofMichii  3 года назад

      yeah but emotional inhibitors are not always in dystopians. It is a common trope tho

    Thank you I kinda got those feeling from the trailer but the idea of it was interesting to me. But that's why I watch sci-fi lol. The Kirsten part was something that put me off as well. I just don;t care for her acting style or I just don't like her. I don't know. Nicholas Hoult is a good actor I've seen in a few things all ranging and he was good in all. Solid in his performance. Yay How to... was a cute romance movie!
    Thank you Heart of Michi!!

    I just saw the movie and i got left hanging by the ending as i really wanted to know if they would make it.
    The ending is clearly open for interpretation so i wanted to ask what do you think?
    Did they make it or not?

    Keanu Reeves also has the same skill cap problem in all his movies…. Why do we regard him as the ultimate A list actor now?

    A good review. Thanks. I will have to check out your channel further as I'm a big fan of dystopian sci fi. I have to say an found it amusing that you kept referring to Jonas as that "guy" the actors name is Guy and as well as Monte Cristo and others he also played George Wells in a remake of the time machine.

    I quite liked this review! I think it was just enough personal opinion that it felt like you were talking to us about how you exprienced it personally and what you thought but just enough I guess you could say objective analysis that I felt like I got something more out of it than what some random person thinks about this one movie.
    And for me, I often get kind of bored with movies or books centered around that age old question of "do emotions matter?" and "should society be completely logical without feelings?" and all that jazz. I think it's because it's kind of an old premise with lots of people trying to redo it or having their own little renditions of it, which isn't bad! But it can feel quite repetitive unless something new like a new question, or a new perspective is added to the premise.
    Thst being said, I looove stories that ask more unique questions or are based on really unique premises and follow a lot of different characters within society and how they react to this unique premise or problem or whatever is happening.
    Also despite this I quite liked that movie but more because I personally just enjoyed for some unexplained reason rather than it being objectively or in a critical sense good. I saw it like maybe a couple of years back? I think I liked it cause I used to watch lots of sci-fi movies, some good and some bad, with my dad and we loved talking about them! Recently we haven't really had time to hang out or do anything like that and I think I miss that.
    But anyway, keep up the great work, your opinions are always enjoyable! ❤️

      You know what? that definitely makes sense. Sometimes we love things without reason. I mean, I love twilight (despite how it may appear in this video ehehhe).
      This right here "Thst being said, I looove stories that ask more unique questions or are based on really unique premises and follow a lot of different characters within society and how they react to this unique premise or problem or whatever is happening. " is something I relate to sooooo much!!
      thank you for sharing your thoughts and I'm glad I was able to hit that balance -- i want to be clear on my biases because what I'm biased against isn't what everyone is!

      aka the best color hehehe

    • @biseragjurovska9868

      I think it was considered the color of power and prestige back in Roman days, because it was the hardest one to come across and extract pigment for. Which is why it wasn't used at all in the clothing of the common people, used a little in the clothing of the Emperors and Senetors and used a lot in the clothing of the Gods when they were being depicted in art! To conclude, I agree purple is a good color.

      Black is the best color although I suppose it’s not technically a color so I can give you that one.

    I don't think its an issue w/ your perception. Its an actor/actresses ' job to act in a way that makes you see them as a new character and not the character's they've played in the past.
