Rant Review: Equals (The Movie)

Equals is a movie which takes place in a world where people do not have emotions. Emotions are seen as a disease. How Will They Turn Foundation into a TV show?
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.4 года назад
The Foundation Series by Isaac Asimov is one of the mostly highly regarded scifi of its time. Most people who love scifi have read and adore this series. Although I claim to be a huge scifi nerd, I had not read this book until this year. I really enjoyed the book, but it's not exactly something that could be easily translated into a TV show. In this video, I speculate about what I would like to...

    The granddaddy's are: 1921 "We" by Yevgeny Zamyatin 1932 "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley 1940 "Darkness at Noon" by Arthur Koestler 1949 "1984" by George Orwell I like BNW the best. We live in a BNW X 1984 world now. They were meant as warnings, not playbooks. We and DAN are much much deeper and harder than 1984 (which is a better retelling of We) I thought _The Giver_ as almost plagiaristic. Being YA is the only reason I say "almost." I thought many many other books said the same things better. This is watered down and dumbed down. The Hunger Games is fun, but unrealistic. I found it an advancement on Shirley Jackson's _The Lottery_ 1985 The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood is probably the best in the last 50 years. 2003 Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood (a trilogy, but only this one is good) and The Parable of the Sower/Talents by Olivia Butler are decent recent additions. If you liked The Parable of the Sower, read _Kindred_. Different topic, but better book If you like "Never Let Me Go" (2004), try Jodi Picoult's My Sister's Keeper (a year earlier) --- similar themes, but without the sci-fi (hence not really dystopian) -- I liked it better

    One of the central themes in my mind was: Is love and human connection more than biochemistry. Is there a fundamental intellectual component to it? Can we have connection beyond and without the physical (*cough* internet *cough*) especially in a society were we have to function and fulfill metrics? Can we transcend the disconnection that the almost religious devotion to rationality and technology caused? Can we even escape human nature or is no amount of tech gonna do that? Stuff like that. But it was pretty shallow and the films answer was "nice question, dunno".

    ah man, Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky (if you know what i mean)... how much can i tell you about how much this man resonated with me? probably a lot, but i won't bother. psychologically speaking, if you wanna go further deep 'within', you'd better submerge in his Notes from Underground. if you wanna go explore the grand 'without', you might enjoy his Brothers Karamazov's ride. this man is the psyche man. p.s. i did most of my Dostoyevsky readings back in my early to mid 20s, and interestingly, somehow for some reason after quite some time, i've started reading him again just recently, this time with his Devils (aka Demons, The Possessed)

I'd love to hear your take on Lev Grossman's The Magicians vs it's TV show from a few years back. I feel like in a similar fashion to the Dune 80's film they veer off in their own directions a ton and are each their own thing but unlike the Dune 80's film both are totally worth it. I mostly agree with you, reading Dune it does feel alot like Paul is more a vehicle for the ideas Herbert is trying to convey than a more fleshed out independent character. I guess also just having a character who is in general quite wise would make it less interesting to imagine them in other scenarios and stuff as their reactions would be alot more reasonable and I suppose you would gain less as their perspective would feel unique.

    Question what are your top three characters in the story. PS not sure about battles being better than star wars as there so few action at all. Though to answer your question, in my opinion the reason it's so popular is because of its world building. In addition to cool characters you have these cool factions spacing guild( witch have assume back story), the various houses, the freeman, and the Bene Gesserit( and later honored matres). As well as how this would came to be. But yah the plot in the beginning can really drag.

On top of that, although the fact that they tried to use many elements to symbolize some aspects of today's work, neither did the story offer a new message nor did a tell us deep one. However, the atmosphere somehow occupied my mind, maybe thanks to the visuals as you said. And, it made me a bit curious to the extent that I'm really excited for the next part. • @demusicfan

    Yeah. I'm kinda on the same page as you. While I get the love for both the books and the movie, I feel they are just emotionally hollow for me. Which might sound crazy with all the drama and action, but I never really form an attachment with anyone. And I feel the movie failed to really convey the scope of the Dune universe and cut too much out. Understandable given time constraints, but like you said, the betrayal of the character you mentioned has zero impact in the movie. Funnily enough, the weak characters in the Foundation Trilogy never bothered me because all the other pieces falling into place fascinated me. Asimov was never any good at nuanced characters and wrote female characters like someone who never met any woman other than his own mother. That being said, he was able to world build. The TV adaption, on the other hand, that is just awful. Total disrespect of the source material.

    • @HeartofMichii
      @HeartofMichii 2 года назад

      The thing I really liked about Foundation was just how much was going on and how interesting the world building was. It was also short and to the point. I'd have loved more from characters, but I loved it regardless. Though, in many ways, Dune pulls more influence from Fantasy than other scifi of its time. You could probably even call it SciFantasy

    14:00 Nope, that's why I struggled getting through the Two Towers and the Return of the King in comparison to the Fellowship of the Ring. They have some of my all time favorite movie scenes, and possibly the most uplifting scenes in all of movies for me ("There's good in this world, Mr. Frodo and it's worth fighting for" and Sam carrying Frodo up Mt. Doom; and Aragorn's speech, Gandalf's "Just a fool's hope" to Pippin", Gandalf smacking Denethor in the head with his hopeful "Prepare for battle!", and Gandalf's exorcism of King Theoden are among my all time favorite scenes), and while the acting, visuals, and music was great, I wanted more story like the original Fellowship of the Ring (the original cut; not the extended). The action went on too long and I preferred more character work. Bring in the Faramir/Eowyn romance and Scourging of the Shire and cut the action down. Also, would have preferred more grounded action instead of the heroes appearing to having the Captain America super soldier serum for strength and endurance since that does not appeal to me (If I'm watching action, I want a gauge on the characters abilities so there's dramatic weight and I prefer characters to train their butts off for their abilities so there's character significance and since I work out, it's more appealing to me which is what drew me into the Dragon Ball character Goku and why he used to be my favorite fictional character despite not liking the more selfish direction of the character... but...sorry, for the tangent, thanks for reviewing Dune! Haven't read or seen Dune, but appreciated your review since I've been hearing various perspective on the book and it's comparison to Lord of the Rings. I want to read the classic books that have had significant impact/influence on people and I share a similar interest in theme so I appreciate your take. What you described was similar to my sensibilities. Although, regarding Star Wars, I like Star Wars Episode 3. Also, did you finally get your contacts? You have beautiful, amazing, fantastic eyes. Sorry, that was kind of cheesy. Although, you look beautiful with glasses as well. Wish I could pull off glasses like you. Your avatar with your glasses is one of the most pleasant avatars. Gotta go. honestly, the Return of the King was my least favorite because there was just sooo much in terms of fight scenes. And I really disliked the hobbit adaptation because it did the same thing. Endless battles, minimal story. It's hard to get through stuff like that. I do have contacts! I try them sometimes. I don't always wear them because they are not super comfortable (I have astigmatism, so if they rotate, it's impossible to see), but I've been testing the waters. First time I ever wore contacts was in June of this year!

    • @JohnHenrysaysHi
      @JohnHenrysaysHi 2 года назад

      @@HeartofMichii Nice. I remember you bringing up getting contacts, but I also remember you had early videos where you didn't wear your glasses so maybe you were just mixing things up. I might be there with you on Return of the King. I tried watching it again recently, and those fight scenes were difficult to maintain interest. My favorite fight in the Return of the King was the Faramir fight where it's juxtaposed with Denethor. The fight might be less than a minute, but the pacing of character work and action was perfect. With the Fellowship of the Ring, I thought we already got a handle on the characters abilities and being competent fighters and their various skills, so, I was bored in the later movies. The Two Towers had the well paced Gandalf vs Balrog fight and the Warg riders fight. Although, I didn't care for the silliness in that fight with Gimli. The creators are swimming upstream with Tolkein's work for the general audience, so I understand the implementation of the silly humor similar to how movies need to get the best looking men to bring in women with their boyfriends into the theater. I don't know if it's a more recent trend since Gone with the Wind was one of the highest grossing movies. If the movies were more like Tolkein's work, they probably couldn't have been made so I'm grateful for the amazing scenes, but as overall films, I did not enjoy Two Towers or Return of the King as much as the first one. But they're not like the MCU movies where those were like watching a toy commercial (I thought the first Iron Man was one of the better Marvel movies along with Spider-man 2 and X-Men Days of Future Past--and I actually like other Marvel movies that I think are worse than a number of MCU movies so I don't mean to be a snob ). And aesthetically and acting-wise, they weren't on the level of those LOTR movies. And with the amount of money that went into the MCU movies, I'm not as light with my critiques as other films where limitations were understandable, and I think of the MCU movies as being garbage as a reaction to that and seeing them rated so high on IMdB along great movies like It's a Wonderful Life (I don't think that's one of the very best, but it's a great movie and one of my favorites!). I shut off the first Avengers when I first went to see it because I disliked the oh-so-clever immature banter. Although, it got me interested in going back to reading the older comics with more serious characterizations that were more respectful to their audiences, which is another reason why I'm grateful for the LOTR movies to get people to the source material, since they might never have checked it out if it wasn't for the movies. Not that the comics are on the level of LOTR. I think you brought up something about not liking silly humor. I think that Hobbit movie had it, and I think I shut it off 20 minutes through, but considered checking it out again, but now I appreciate your heads up! Already, conceptually, the Middle Earth setting isn't too my taste, but the overall good vs evil theme, characters, acting, music, beautiful aesthetics, drew me in but with the silly humor of the new Hobbit movie and the video game aesethetic of the dwarves and trolls, I was out. I turned off the 300 movie early on too because of the video game looking aesthetic and the junky sex scene, but tried it again, skipping through the junk, and enjoyed Leonidas' characterization (plus, it might of helped that read the Frank Miller comic before checking it out again) so I was thinking about checking out the Hobbit movie again, but I think I'm good with that 1970s animated Hobbit movie (I liked that one at the time!). Did you like Lawrence of Arabia? Supposedly it's about the same story as Dune, and since I don't care for Dune's aesthetic and prefer something more grounded, do you think it's worth checking out if I wasn't the biggest fan of Lawrence of Arabia? I thought it was a great movie. I gave it a 9/10, but I watched it as homework over enjoyment to get insight of the culture, and since it was considered one of the best movies, I had to check it out. I don't think it's one of the best like Gone with the Wind. Gone with the Wind was a 10/10 movie for me along with The Godfather, Ben Hur, Bride of Frankenstein, Dial M for Murder, the original cut of the Fellowship of the Ring, Inception, the Incredibles, and Mad Max Fury Road. Mad Max Fury Road was a movie that was criticized for being more about visuals and lacking depth but what did you think? Don't worry if you think it stinks. My opinion could have stunk on ice, and I'm glad to change my assessment. It helps me to get other perspectives because I want to share good entertainment with others.

      I 100% agree about the Faramir fight -- when things are short and to the point, it's more enjoyable, especially when the weight is so heavy for the characters. I also found the humor in the hobit movies off-putting. Honestly, when people say they like those movies, I cannot relate at all and I wonder what indeed they liked about it because the only thing I enjoyed was Martin Freeman. I think he's a good actor and did his best as Bilbo. I'm not as much into the medieval fantasy aesthetic either, I really like futuristic settings (like the one in Blade Runner or Altered Carbon). I like big cities with lots of tech, but I can appreciate the fantasy aesthetic because I do love forests. TBH my favorite part of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy was the Ent Culture. The tree-people are fascinating to me!! I have never seen Lawrence of Arabia to be honest, but depsite my feelings about the length of the Dune movie, I do think it was really good. I won't likely rewatch it because it's 3 hours, but if someone were to invite me to theater, maybe I'd watch it just because it is a cool experience. \ I have also not seen Max Fury Road, buuuut Inception is one of my favorite movies. The Godfather is good too, but the pacing is also kind of slow for me. I preferred Goodfellas which is kind of on the opposite spectrum of mobs, but very interesting to me.

      @@HeartofMichii I'm glad his performance was good. I don't remember him much outside of Sherlock, and he was the only character I could really get into on that show. Did you like that new show? I couldn't stand how apparently smart Sherlock was. He didn't come across as smart to me. He came across like he has super intelligence. I thought it was cartoonish, and it's kind of why I couldn't get into anime that people held up as being so intelligent when it came across as telling me but wasn't showing me (I tried that one Monster anime--same deal as Sherlock). One of my favorite examples of show don't tell intelligence is Frank Morris in the 1979 Escape from Alcatraz movie. I forgot about Blade Runner. Thank you for bringing it up because that's what I thought of when you said you were hanging on Dune for the theme. I don't know if you remember but I brought up to you about one of my favorite you tubers whose favorite color was purple who inspired me to read TMNT comics (I read all that were available at my library--they were quick reads--I like friendship, family, martial arts, and comedy so it was similar to what I liked about Dragon Ball--except it's an easier recommend since it doesn't have that anime pervy stuff and the characters were more noble and intelligent), and Blade Runner is his favorite movie. I tried watching that movie because of him and because of someone else said it was his favorite movie, but it didn't click with me, so I was hanging on that because of the theme, and I didn't like the theme (He's also one of the reasons I re-watched the Star Wars Episode 3 movie because him and his chat talked it up--and that I liked. Maybe if you skip through the toy ad stuff, you might enjoy what was going on with the Emperor's evil emotional manipulation of Anakin. I think it's one of the most relevant big pop culture movies besides The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises). Haha Sorry. I'm glad you brought it up, Michi. SO I COULD STOMP ON IT! I'm kidding. What did you like about the world? I saw that ZombiesRuinEverything came back with an article on it as well as the sequel and I disagreed with him. I didn't like those movies so I'm interested to hear another take. Although, the youtuber I mentioned, I think he liked it more for what you were saying. He's all about originality and creativity, and that's what's making me consider giving it another look and why I'm appreciating Tolkien's Middle Earth for it's originality. It's what might make me appreciate Ent Culture more since that was what I was referring to that conceptually turned me away from the fantastical Middle Earth setting. Along with elves, dwarves, wizards, etc. But, Treebeard and the Ents were good. It's kind of like with superheroes and their colorful costumes and fantastical superpowers which doesn't appeal to me conceptually, but then when I read the characters, since I liked them so much, then it brought me on board with the costumes and fantastical powers. Now Goodfellas, I thought was a well made movie (maybe more realistic than Godfather), but I didn't like that it wasn't as clean cut as The Godfather where Michael's fall from grace put him as a straight up villain so if he didn't receive justice at the end, at least the narrative condemned him whereas I didn't get that from the Goodfellas so it was kind of like how I generally don't like horror movies where I have a dark feeling after watching without the good conquering evil or the hope that good will triumph. So, for an example, I really liked Psycho since there was still the hope there for good to triumph in that universe (I never saw the sequels. I actually didn't know there were sequels until recently. For that or...did you know there was a third Sandlot movie?) But I liked Casino. I gave it a 9/10/ Although, ratings are more quick ways for recommending entertainment to others in way that can be debated as opposed to my taste. Just like with Lawrence of Arabia, which I think is a 9/10 movie but it's not to my liking. I recently watched The Amazing Spider-man 2 and gave that a 7/10, and would rather rewatch it again over Raiders of the Lost Ark and I'd give that movie a 10/10. That wasn't a good example because I really like Raiders of the Lost Ark but I realized that I forgot it so I'm taking the opportunity to tell you another 10/10 recommendation. Actually, I gave the first Amazing Spider-man a 7/10 movie as well but I didn't like that movie because of how horrible Peter Parker's characterization was but the acting, visuals, action, and supporting cast were all good. If you see Mad Max Fury Road, I hope you like it. But after writing to you, I just remembered that there was nothing memorable about the main protagonists. I don't remember anything about Max's character except I think he was gruff and I don't remember anything about the woman. I thought it had an overall theme of defending the sanctity of life, which is a theme I love, so that with the beautiful visuals and immersive apocalptic world clicked with me. Maybe it shouldn't get a 10/10. I'm glad you enjoyed Dune! Thank you for reviewing both it and the book!

    gender swap means nothing if the show fails to deliver, i've already seen some cracks fall into places with in the show because the writing is hinting toward a partisan narrative structure

    Great review! I love the Jurassic Park/Lost World books and look forward to reading more of Crichton’s work. I read the “o” in Andromeda as the “o” in “drop” and the “e” as in “help”. Edit: also very curious about the stars/dragon book you mentioned, do you know the title?

      it is that pronunciation, i'm just a dork bwahahaha As for the book -- it's called To Sleep in a Sea of Stars by Christopher Paolini. It's incredibly well-researched, but over 800 pages and that's a lot for a space opera. I'm not much for space opera, then to make it long? Even if the science is real i can't invest that much time lol

    I love it when a good book awakens one's wonder and admiration of things that a bad education system might've ruined for us in the past.

    I love Asimov and his books. Asimov’s style is to write thin characters. His books are quick reads that explore ideas - that’s what I love about them. But that’s great for adaption into the screen. It allows the show freedom to do a lot with the characters. It doesn’t bother me at all that the characters will be different sex/gender and “race” than in the books, because that was never an important part of the books. After watching the first couple episodes, I think casting has been great!
